It transfers the bytes returned by a URL; it does not run JavaScript, calculate CSS layout, load web fonts, or paint pixels. You can use cURL to download an existing image and then encode it as WebP with cwebp. If you need an image of the rendered page, use a browser such as Playwright—or a screenshot API that runs a browser for you.
What cURL actually captures
The curl manual describes cURL as a transfer tool that “does not parse or otherwise ‘understand’ the content it gets or writes as output.” Unless you request a dedicated transformation, it simply writes the server response. A URL may identify an HTML document, an image, a PDF, or another file, so the result depends entirely on what the server returns.
That creates three different tasks that are often called a “screenshot”:

Saving HTML as page.webp does not convert it. The extension changes the filename, not the bytes. Always identify the response and inspect the file before choosing an encoder.

Workflow 1: download an existing image and convert it to WebP
1. Download the source image
Use -L to follow redirects and -o to choose the local filename:
curl -L https://example.com/image.jpg -o image.jpgFor a script that should fail on HTTP errors, add --fail. To retain useful diagnostics without mixing them into the image file, keep progress output on the terminal (the default for a normal terminal) or use --silent --show-error:

--output image.jpgIf the URL requires authentication, add the appropriate header or cookie, but do not put secrets in a command that will be saved in shell history. Check what you downloaded:

curl --head --location https://example.com/image.jpgThe response should have an image media type such as image/jpeg or image/png. A login page, error document, or anti-bot response can also be saved with an image-looking filename; file and the response headers expose that mistake.
2. Encode with the libwebp command-line utility
Install the cwebp executable supplied by Google’s libwebp tools for your operating system, then run:
cwebp -q 80 image.jpg -o image.webp-q accepts a quality value from 0 to 100. Lower values generally produce smaller lossy files and more visible artifacts; higher values preserve more detail. A photographic image may tolerate a lower value than a screenshot containing small text and sharp UI edges.

For pixel-exact output where the source and WebP features permit it, use lossless mode:
cwebp -lossless image.png -o image.webpYou can resize or crop while encoding. These operations are useful when the image is larger than the display slot that will consume it:
cwebp -q 82 -resize 1600 0 image.jpg -o image.webp
cwebp -q 85 -crop 0 0 1200 800 image.jpg -o image-crop.webpUse one operation at a time when diagnosing quality changes. Compare the resulting dimensions and file sizes:

ls -lh image.jpg image.webpThe exact size reduction depends on the source. Google’s WebP documentation reports that WebP images are about 30% smaller than comparable JPEG and PNG images at equivalent visual quality; treat that as published guidance, not a guarantee for every asset.
Workflow 2: render the webpage, then write WebP
If the requirement is “show me what a visitor sees,” use a real browser. Playwright’s screenshot API supports full-page capture and WebP output. The following complete ES module waits for network activity to settle, writes a full-page image, and closes the browser even when the capture fails:

Choose the capture boundary deliberately
- Viewport screenshot: omit
fullPage(or set it tofalse) when you need only the visible 1440×900 area. - Full-page screenshot: set
fullPage: trueto include the complete scrollable document. Very long pages can create extremely tall images and high memory use. - Element screenshot: locate a component and call
locator.screenshot({ path: 'card.webp', type: 'webp', quality: 90 })when surrounding navigation is irrelevant.
Wait for a meaningful readiness condition when “network idle” is not enough. A page may finish network requests while a chart, ad slot, or lazy image is still being populated. In those cases, wait for a selector, an application-specific state, or a short, justified delay. Disable animations if deterministic pixels matter, and set a fixed viewport, locale, timezone, and device scale factor so repeated runs compare like with like.
WebP quality and fidelity
Playwright’s WebP quality option is relevant to lossy output. Quality 100 is lossless according to the documented API behavior; lower settings trade file size for detail. Text-heavy pages often need a high quality value or lossless output to keep thin strokes readable. Photographic backgrounds usually compress well at a lower value. Inspect the actual image at 100% before selecting a default.
cURL versus a rendered capture: a decision checklist
- Use only cURL when you need the original image or the raw HTML response.
- Use cURL plus
cwebpwhen an image already exists and your goal is format conversion. - Use Playwright when JavaScript, responsive layout, CSS, fonts, lazy loading, consent dialogs, or authenticated browser state affect the pixels.
- Use an API when you want a repeatable HTTP call without maintaining browser binaries, navigation code, and capture workers.
Remember that a WebP file can be either lossy or lossless, can include transparency, and can be animated. Browser support is built into Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and Opera, but check the consuming system if you are targeting an older or embedded client.

Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
Control network and browser variability
A command that downloads an existing image is usually faster and more deterministic than rendering a page. A browser capture depends on third-party scripts, font timing, geolocation, cookies, viewport, and server response time. Pin those inputs when visual diffs or scheduled jobs matter. Set explicit timeouts, record the URL and options used, and retry transient network failures with a bounded backoff rather than an infinite loop.

Keep very large captures manageable
Full-page screenshots combine page height, viewport width, device scale factor, and pixel format. A long page at retina scale can consume substantial memory and produce a file that is awkward to transfer. Capture a relevant element, use a viewport shot, or resize after capture when a full document is not required. For text, resizing too aggressively can make labels unreadable.
Choose lossy or lossless intentionally
Lossy WebP is usually the smaller choice for photographs. Lossless WebP is safer for diagrams, screenshots with fine text, and assets where every pixel matters. Compare both file size and legibility on the actual target page; a nominal quality number is not a substitute for inspection.
Understand billing when using an API

Troubleshooting common failures
The output named .webp opens as HTML
You downloaded a document rather than an image, or renamed HTML without encoding it. Run file output.webp, inspect headers, save the response as page.html, and use a browser workflow if you wanted rendered pixels.

The image URL redirects to a login or error page
Use --head --location to inspect the redirect chain and status. Supply the required authentication header or cookie, and keep credentials out of logs. Confirm the final Content-Type before passing the file to cwebp.

The cURL result misses content visible in a browser
The missing material is likely generated by JavaScript, loaded lazily, or inserted after an API call. cURL does not execute that code. Use Playwright and wait for the relevant selector or use ScreenshotNeo’s wait and lazy-image options.
The Playwright page is incomplete
Replace a generic networkidle assumption with an explicit readiness check, such as waiting for the main content selector. Increase the navigation timeout for slow origins, confirm that the page is not blocked by a consent dialog, and set a fixed viewport. For lazy content, scroll or use a capture service option that loads lazy images.
The WebP is too large or text looks damaged
For a large file, lower -q or the Playwright quality value, reduce dimensions, or crop to the useful region. For blurry text or halos, raise quality or use lossless mode. Check the image at its actual display size before changing settings again.
Full-page capture runs out of memory
Capture the viewport or a specific element, reduce device scale factor, or split a very long document into logical sections. Do not assume that a single giant bitmap is the best archival format.

Can cURL convert HTML directly to WebP?
No. cURL can download the HTML, but conversion to a visual image requires a layout engine such as a browser.
Does WebP always make a screenshot smaller?
No. The result depends on source pixels, dimensions, alpha, animation, and quality settings. Measure the output and inspect readability.
Should I use JPEG or WebP for a page capture?
Use WebP when your consumers support it and you want its lossy or lossless modes. Choose another format when a downstream system specifically requires it; ScreenshotNeo can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF.
