Load the page with Ruffle, wait for the movie to render, interact with any play or unmute prompt, and then use your browser or operating system’s normal screenshot control. This preserves the Flash movie and the surrounding webpage. If you have the SWF file and need only the movie, Ruffle’s exporter can write selected frames to PNG.
Adobe ended Flash Player support on December 31, 2020, blocked Flash content on January 12, 2021, and recommends uninstalling the plugin. See Adobe’s Flash Player Admin Guide for the dates and security guidance.
Why installing Flash Player is not a screenshot solution
Flash Player is no longer a supported way to render a page. Adobe announced its end-of-life plan in 2017 and directed developers toward open technologies such as HTML5, WebGL and WebAssembly in its Flash update announcement. Adobe’s later administration guidance records the final support date as December 31, 2020 and the content block as January 12, 2021. It also says, “Adobe strongly recommends all users immediately uninstall Flash Player.” Do not download an old browser build or an archived plugin merely to obtain a screenshot.
If an application still displays a message that Flash Player is required, Adobe’s support page does not turn the obsolete plugin into a safe, supported capture method. Emulation is the practical route for content you are authorized to view.

Choose the capture route that matches your goal

Use the first route when context matters—for example, documenting how the movie appeared inside a lesson or product page. Use the exporter when the SWF itself is the deliverable or when you need a repeatable frame number.
Method 1: render the webpage with Ruffle and capture it
What you need
- A page that still loads its Flash movie or an archived copy you are permitted to access.
- Ruffle available through the page, a browser extension, or another supported web integration. Ruffle’s web README describes how its web player detects embedded Flash and replaces it with the emulator.
- Enough time for the page, emulator, fonts and movie assets to finish loading.
Step-by-step procedure
- Open the page in a Ruffle-enabled setup. Confirm that the Flash rectangle is replaced by the Ruffle player rather than an “install Flash” notice. If the page is from an archive, remember that the HTML may have been saved without the SWF.
- Wait for the intended visual state. Let the movie initialize and allow images or other page elements around it to finish rendering. A screenshot taken during loading can capture a blank canvas or an intermediate frame.
- Respond to interaction prompts. Click a play, start, or unmute control when Ruffle shows one. Modern browser autoplay rules can prevent sound or playback until a user gesture; the visual frame may also remain paused until you interact.
- Set the page view. Scroll so the movie and the surrounding content you need are visible. Do not resize the window after the movie reaches the target state if resizing changes its layout or animation timing.
- Use the browser or operating system screenshot function you normally use. Choose a window, region, or full-screen capture according to whether you need page context. There is no single universal shortcut documented by Ruffle, so follow the capture control for your platform.
- Verify the image. Check that the movie is not a loading spinner, the page is not showing a consent or error overlay, and the desired frame is visible before saving the PNG, JPEG, or other format offered by your capture tool.
Making Ruffle start by itself
Ruffle cannot always start a movie automatically. A page may require a click because of browser autoplay policy, or the movie may contain code that Ruffle does not yet emulate. Treat the first visible frame as unconfirmed until you have watched the movie reach the state you intend to document. If a play or unmute prompt appears, activate it before capturing.
Method 2: export an image directly from an SWF
When the webpage layout is irrelevant and you have the SWF, use Ruffle’s documented exporter. The repository gives this example, which writes screenshots for a selected frame range:

The --frames 5 argument requests frame 5; select the frame or range appropriate to your movie using the exporter’s current command-line documentation.

Exporter requirements and output
- The exporter currently requires hardware acceleration, although it can run headless, according to the Ruffle repository.
- The output is the movie image, not a screenshot of the webpage around it. Navigation, captions outside the SWF, browser chrome and other HTML are not included.
- Keep the SWF and the exporter version together when you need reproducible results. Ruffle’s support for ActionScript 1, 2 and 3 remains unfinished, so a movie can export differently from the original Flash Player or fail to render.
Archived pages, local files and missing assets
Wayback Machine captures
If an archived page shows Ruffle’s message indicating a likely CORS block, Ruffle’s user FAQ says that, on the Wayback Machine, this specifically means the SWF was not archived. Ruffle cannot recreate a file that the archive does not contain. Look for an authorized copy of the SWF or another archived capture instead; do not promise that an archived HTML page includes every dependent asset.
Local HTML pages
Ruffle’s FAQ explains that browser restrictions prevent Ruffle from running directly from a local HTML file opened with a file:// URL. Serve the directory over HTTP, then open the resulting address. For a quick local test, run:
python3 -m http.server 8000Open http://localhost:8000/ in the browser where Ruffle is available. Keep the server running while you load the page and capture it. This is only for content you own or are authorized to inspect.
Troubleshooting failed or incorrect captures
The page only shows an “install Flash” message
The page is not using Ruffle, or its integration did not detect the embedded movie. Enable Ruffle through the page’s supported web integration or extension, reload, and inspect whether the Flash area is replaced by the emulator. Do not install the discontinued Adobe plugin.

The movie is blank or frozen
Wait for all assets, reload once, and try the interaction prompt. If the result remains blank, the movie may depend on ActionScript or APIs Ruffle has not finished implementing. The Ruffle repository explicitly describes ActionScript 1, 2 and 3 support as unfinished, so a failed render is a compatibility limit, not proof that the SWF is empty.
Audio does not start
Click the player’s play or unmute control. Browser autoplay restrictions can block sound until a user gesture. Capture after the visual state, rather than the audio, is correct; a screenshot cannot preserve sound.
The Wayback copy reports a CORS problem
For Wayback pages, Ruffle’s FAQ uses that message to indicate the SWF was not archived. Search for a legitimate copy of the movie or request a different capture. Changing screenshot settings cannot recover an absent asset.
Ruffle will not run from a local file
Use a local HTTP server as described above. Opening the same file directly from disk leaves the browser restrictions that prevent Ruffle from running.

The exporter fails before producing an image
Confirm that the SWF path is correct, the output directory is writable, and hardware acceleration is available. If the command runs headless on a machine without usable GPU acceleration, move the export to a system that satisfies the exporter’s documented requirement.
The screenshot catches the wrong animation frame
Pause the movie at the intended state when the player allows it, or use the exporter with an explicit frame selection. For a live page, wait for the same state again after every reload; animation timing can differ between runs.
Quality and record-keeping checklist
- Record the source URL and capture date.
- Note whether you used a live page, an archive, or a local SWF.
- For an exporter result, record the frame argument and the Ruffle version or build.
- For a page screenshot, note whether you captured the full page, a region, or only the player.
- Keep the original image format when possible and make a separate resized copy for publishing.
- Inspect the edges of the movie for clipping, scaling artifacts, consent overlays or chat widgets before treating the image as final evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I record so another person can reproduce the capture?
Keep the source URL, capture date, whether the page came from an archive, the Ruffle build or version, and either the exporter frame argument or the page interaction used to reach the target state.
Can a screenshot prove that the original Flash movie behaved exactly as it did in Flash Player?
No. It records the rendered state only. Ruffle’s ActionScript 1, 2 and 3 support is unfinished, so interactive behavior and rendering can differ even when a frame is available.

For page context, render the movie with Ruffle and capture the visible page. For a movie-only image, export the SWF frame directly. Neither method can recover a missing SWF or guarantee compatibility with every Flash title.
