For a quick recording on the same computer, use the built-in screen recorder: Windows 11’s Snipping Tool or macOS Screenshot/QuickTime. For repeatable recordings with multiple video and audio sources, use OBS. If you are building a web recorder, request a user-selected stream with getDisplayMedia() and record it with MediaRecorder. Audio capture is not guaranteed by the browser API, so make a short test recording first.
Choose the right way to record
| Method | Best for | Audio | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Snipping Tool | A quick rectangular recording | Depends on system and app configuration; verify with a test | Available features can vary by Windows build |
| macOS Screenshot or QuickTime Player | A quick full-screen or selected-area recording | Screenshot offers a microphone option; system-audio choices vary by macOS version | Some apps may refuse window recording |
| OBS Studio | Repeatable recordings, scenes, or multiple sources | Flexible, but you must configure and test the sources | Capture source choices differ by operating system |
Browser getDisplayMedia() |
Developers implementing recording in a web app | Support varies by browser and capture source | Requires a user gesture and a permission prompt |
| HDMI capture card | Recording video from a separate HDMI device | Depends on the source and capture setup | Extra hardware; unnecessary for recording a browser on the same computer |
Record a browser video on Windows
On Windows 11, Snipping Tool is the shortest route for a simple clip. Microsoft documents video snips and the Win+Shift+R shortcut. Audio behavior depends on the system and application configuration, so confirm that the saved clip has the sound you need.
- Open the browser and navigate to the video. Put the player where you can select it, and close anything you do not want in the recording.
- Press Win+Shift+R to open the Snipping Tool recording controls.
- Choose the rectangular area containing the browser player. Include any controls or captions you need.
- Select Start, play the video, and select Stop when finished.
- Save the recording or edit it in Clipchamp if needed. Play the saved file to verify its picture and sound.
Windows 10 and different Windows 11 builds may not expose the same feature set. If the video-recording control or an expected audio option is absent, use a recorder available on your system, such as OBS, and test its sources before making a longer recording.
Record a browser video on a Mac
macOS Screenshot and QuickTime Player can record the entire screen or a selected portion, according to Apple’s guidance. Screenshot also offers a microphone option; available system-audio choices vary by macOS version.

- Open the browser video and set the player to the size and position you want.
- Press Shift+Command+5.
- Choose Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion. For the latter, size the selection around the browser player.
- If you need narration, open Options and select the microphone you want to use. Do not assume this records the video’s system audio.
- Select Record. Stop from the menu bar when the clip is done, then play back the saved file to check it.
QuickTime Player is another built-in route: open QuickTime Player, choose File > New Screen Recording, choose a full-screen or selected-area recording, and start. The exact audio controls depend on the macOS version and setup.
Apple notes that some applications, including Apple TV, may not allow their windows to be recorded. A browser video that is protected or blocked by its service may likewise fail to appear in a recording; no method here guarantees capture of every streaming service.
Use OBS for repeatable recordings
OBS is useful when you need repeatable scenes, more than one capture source, or control over which audio inputs are recorded. Its available sources depend on the operating system. OBS marks the legacy Display Capture source as deprecated on macOS 13 and newer and directs users to macOS Screen Capture; the older source path applies to macOS 10.15–12.6. Display Capture is available on Windows.

- In OBS, add the appropriate browser window, application, or display capture source for your operating system. Prefer a window or application source when available and when you want to exclude unrelated desktop content.
- Crop the source to the video player if needed. Check the preview for the intended framing.
- Add or select the audio source you intend to record. If you need both video sound and narration, verify that each intended source is present and configured.
- Record a few seconds, stop, and play the test file. Check that the image, sound, and framing are right before recording the full clip.
- Select Start Recording for the full capture, then stop and inspect the saved recording.
The right source names and controls can differ by OS and OBS version. If the preview is black, review the operating-system screen-recording permission and try an appropriate window or display source. If there is no sound, confirm that the selected audio source exists and is enabled.
Build a browser recorder with the Screen Capture API
For a web app, navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia() asks the user to choose a tab, window, or screen and returns a MediaStream. Pass that stream to MediaRecorder, collect the emitted data chunks, and save them when recording ends. The chooser and permission are part of the flow: the call must be made in response to a transient user gesture, and permission cannot be persisted for a later recording.
Here is a complete minimal example. Save it as an HTML file and serve it from a secure context such as localhost or HTTPS. The user must click the button and approve the browser’s chooser. The example records the stream returned by the chooser; it cannot silently select a tab or guarantee audio.

The example uses WebM as a fallback MIME type. MediaRecorder format support varies, so production code should check MediaRecorder.isTypeSupported() for candidate MIME types in the target browser before constructing the recorder. The minimal example keeps the chosen stream in memory until recording stops; long recordings can consume substantial memory. For longer sessions, request periodic data delivery with a timeslice and persist chunks incrementally rather than retaining every chunk in an array.
Audio is a request, not a promise
audio: true asks for audio tracks, but browser support varies by browser, recorder, and selected source. The systemAudio: "include" option is only a hint; Chrome may still return no system-audio track. Inspect stream.getAudioTracks() after selection and make a short test recording. If system audio is unavailable, offer a microphone or a separate-audio workflow, and explain that microphone narration is not the same as capturing the browser’s playback audio.

A Chrome extension can use chrome.tabCapture after a user gesture. Chrome documents a service-worker/offscreen-document approach beginning with Chrome 116. A recording initiated in a content script can end on navigation; moving the recording work to an offscreen document avoids that particular lifecycle problem. This is an extension architecture, not a way for an ordinary webpage to capture a tab without the user’s action.

Record video from a separate device with HDMI
If the video is playing in a browser on a separate computer, tablet, or other device with HDMI output, an external capture card can route that device’s HDMI signal into a computer. Record the input in OBS or the capture-card vendor’s software. The card, source device, connections, and recording software must all support the intended video and audio path.
A USB HDMI capture card is not needed when the browser and recorder run on the same computer. Elgato’s HD60 X product page describes USB-C 3.2 Gen1 connectivity, Windows/Mac/iPad support, and OBS compatibility, but marks the model discontinued and names 4K S as its successor. Check current model availability and stock rather than assuming a listing remains current.

NotReadableError: The selected source may be unavailable to the browser or blocked by an operating-system or hardware condition. Some apps or protected players prevent recording; there is no universal fix or service-by-service compatibility guarantee.
- The recording has no sound: Inspect whether the selected stream contains audio tracks. The browser may not provide system audio for that source. Test the target browser and OS; choose a microphone or separate-audio fallback if that meets the need.
- The recording ends when a page changes: In a Chrome extension, content-script capture can end on navigation. Use the documented offscreen-document approach for extension recording that must outlast a content-script lifecycle.
- The saved file will not play: Check the browser’s MediaRecorder MIME support and use a supported format. Do a short end-to-end test, including playback in the application the recipient will use.
