To capture a VHS tape on a Windows PC, connect a working VCR to a compatible USB video-capture device, then add that device to OBS as a Video Capture Device source. OBS cannot receive a VCR’s analog output directly; on Windows, the capture device’s driver must support DirectShow. Check both picture and sound in a short test recording before recording a full tape.
What you need before opening OBS
The signal path is VCR → USB capture device → Windows PC → OBS Studio. The VCR plays the tape; the capture device converts its analog output into a signal the computer can record.
- A working VCR with composite RCA video output, or S-Video if your capture device also accepts it.
- An analog USB capture device with matching inputs, audio capture, and a Windows driver that supports DirectShow. OBS identifies DirectShow output as the Windows driver requirement for this source type (OBS Video Capture Sources).
- Matching cables: composite video and left/right audio use the corresponding video, red, and white connections. S-Video carries video only, so connect audio separately. Check the adapter’s manual; for example, the UCEC manual cautions against connecting composite video and S-Video simultaneously on its device (UCEC product manual).
- Enough free disk space at the OBS recording destination. The right recording format and settings depend on your setup; the sources cited here do not establish one universally best VHS container or bitrate.
Before buying an adapter, verify its supported Windows version, input standard, audio behavior, and OBS/DirectShow compatibility. A device appearing as a capture source does not mean it has been certified by OBS; the OBS certified-device list covers a specific certification program, not every compatible adapter (OBS Certified Devices).
Connect the VCR and add the capture device in OBS
- Install OBS and the adapter’s driver. Follow the capture-device manufacturer’s current driver instructions. OBS’s Windows Video Capture Device source relies on a driver that supports DirectShow output (OBS Video Capture Sources).
- Connect the cables. Attach the VCR’s composite video and left/right audio outputs to the matching capture-device inputs, or use S-Video for picture if both devices support it and connect audio separately. Plug the adapter into the PC. Start playing a tape when you are ready to check the signal.
- Add the source. In OBS, find the Sources dock, select +, then Video Capture Device. Name the source and select your capture adapter in the source properties’ Device list. The OBS Quick Start Guide also recommends checking the source and audio mixer during setup (OBS Quick Start Guide).
- Check the preview and supported modes. Confirm that the tape is playing and that the OBS preview shows its picture. Use a resolution and frame rate the adapter actually supports. Choosing an unsupported resolution can prevent video from appearing, so do not force a custom value just because it is labeled as a VHS resolution in another device’s example.
- Match the video standard to the tape. If the capture device exposes a Configure Video control or video-standard setting, use the standard appropriate to the tape and supported by the device. The available controls differ between adapters; Elgato’s instructions describe this option for its own product, not as a universal OBS setting (Elgato Video Capture — OBS Studio Setup for Windows 10/11).
- Check audio separately. While the tape plays, watch the OBS Audio Mixer. If its meter does not move, inspect the capture source’s audio mode and device selection; depending on the adapter and driver, audio may be part of the video source or exposed as a separate Windows audio input. OBS offers capture-only and desktop-audio output modes. Capture-only audio can be recorded without being heard in your speakers unless you configure audio monitoring.
- Make and review a short test recording. Check the destination and recording settings, record a brief segment, stop, and play the file. Verify that it contains both picture and sound and that they remain acceptably synchronized. OBS recommends making a test recording before the full session (OBS Quick Start Guide).
- Record the tape. Start recording in OBS, then play the tape from the beginning or the point you want to save. Watch the preview and audio meter, and stop the OBS recording when playback is finished.
Choose settings that your adapter supports
Resolution and frame rate
Use a mode the capture device reports as supported and that produces a correct-looking picture in OBS. Do not treat the UCEC manual’s example of “480×333” as a universal VHS capture resolution: it is an example for that manual’s device, not a setting established for every adapter or tape system (UCEC product manual). If a mode produces a black preview, return to a supported option.

Input standard and image appearance
Choose the video standard that matches the tape and the capture hardware. Do not copy a PAL or NTSC setting from another adapter’s instructions without checking your own device and source. If the image looks unusually faded or contrast-heavy, check the device’s color-range controls and documentation. Elgato discusses standard and range adjustments for its own capture device; those recommendations may not apply to another model (Elgato Video Capture — OBS Studio Setup for Windows 10/11).
Interlacing
Motion in footage from VHS-derived analog video can show interlacing artifacts. Deinterlacing is an optional quality-workflow decision: you can evaluate the captured file and decide whether to address it in OBS or during later processing. A filter cannot restore picture detail that was not captured, and there is no single deinterlacing method established here as best for every tape and workflow. Troubleshoot common capture problems
OBS shows a black preview
- Check that the VCR is playing and that the tape has a usable signal.
- In the source properties, confirm OBS selected the capture adapter rather than a webcam.
- Check that the adapter is set to the physical input you used and that each cable is seated in the matching input.
- Confirm the driver is installed and supports DirectShow, then select a resolution and frame rate the adapter supports.
The video records but there is no sound
- Watch the OBS Audio Mixer while the tape is playing. If the meter moves, make a short test recording and replay it to check that audio was recorded.
- If the meter is idle, check whether audio is enabled in the Video Capture Device source or needs to be selected as a separate audio input for that driver.
- For Elgato Video Capture specifically, the manufacturer documents a Device Manager procedure involving its “Analog Audio In” entry, as well as deactivating and reactivating or reconnecting the device if its meter stops moving. Use that procedure only for the applicable Elgato product and follow its instructions (Elgato Video Capture — OBS Studio Setup for Windows 10/11).
Playback stutters or appears delayed
Try changing the capture source’s buffering setting, if available, and test again. OBS documents buffering as a setting that can help stuttering when enabled or delay when disabled; the useful state depends on the adapter. Elgato recommends buffering disabled for its own product, which should not be assumed to suit other devices (OBS Video Capture Sources; Elgato Video Capture — OBS Studio Setup for Windows 10/11).
The picture looks wrong or motion looks jagged
Recheck the selected input and video standard first. If colors appear faded or overly contrasted, review the adapter’s color-range options. Jagged or comb-like edges during motion may be interlacing artifacts; whether to deinterlace during capture or later is a workflow choice, not a fix that restores missing detail.

What to check when choosing a USB capture adapter
Do not choose by a generic “VHS capture” label alone. Compare the traits that determine whether the adapter will work with your setup:
- Inputs: composite RCA, S-Video, or both, and whether the adapter accepts the VCR’s audio directly.
- Windows support: driver availability for your Windows version and DirectShow visibility in OBS.
- Supported standards and modes: compatibility with the tape’s video standard and usable capture modes.
- Audio handling: whether sound appears within the video source or as a separate Windows input, and how it can be monitored.
- Documentation and support: current manufacturer instructions for setup and model-specific troubleshooting.
A USB adapter with RCA inputs is the relevant device category for a VCR with composite outputs; S-Video is useful only when both the VCR and adapter support it. A device-specific manual can show how that model connects and appears in OBS, but it does not establish that other adapters have equivalent picture quality, drivers, or audio performance.
