If you need an image of the browser’s own certificate warning instead, that is a different task: ordinary page screenshots capture page content, and a reliable cross-browser way to capture browser-generated warning screens is not established by the documentation cited here.
Capture the site content with Playwright
Playwright’s ignoreHTTPSErrors browser-context option defaults to false. Set it when creating the context, before opening the page and navigating to the HTTPS URL. Then use the page screenshot API to capture the rendered result. See the Playwright browser context documentation and screenshot guide.
Runnable Node.js example
Install Playwright and its browser binaries, then save this as thumbnail.js. Replace the URL with the HTTPS page you need to capture.

The context-level setting applies to pages in that context; it does not change system-wide browser trust or server configuration. Use it only for the capture where you accept the risk of proceeding past certificate validation.

Choose the output deliberately
- Rendered site: Navigate with certificate errors ignored, then call
page.screenshot(). The saved image represents whatever content actually rendered, which could still be an application error, blank page, or incomplete page. - Browser certificate interstitial: Do not assume a page screenshot will include browser interface or a browser-generated warning. Verify behavior for the specific browser and version; the Playwright page screenshot documentation describes page capture, not a general cross-browser method for capturing browser UI.
Keep certificate problems distinct
Target website’s server certificate
For an expired, self-signed, or hostname-mismatched certificate on the target HTTPS site, ignoreHTTPSErrors changes how the automation context handles the browser’s HTTPS error. It does not renew the certificate, establish that the connection is trustworthy, or repair the website. For normal visitors and production systems, the durable solution is to correct the certificate configuration rather than bypass validation.
Client-certificate authentication
Playwright’s clientCertificates option addresses a different TLS scenario: a server requests a client certificate to authenticate the caller, and the certificate is scoped to an origin. It is not a fix for a server certificate that is expired, self-signed, or issued for another hostname. See Playwright’s context options.

Proxy errors while installing browser binaries
If Playwright fails while downloading browser binaries through a proxy that intercepts TLS, that is a local download trust-chain problem, not a target-page certificate error. For that documented proxy scenario, Playwright describes adding the proxy’s custom CA with NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS; follow the install-behind-a-firewall-or-proxy guidance. Do not treat this setting as a substitute for ignoreHTTPSErrors on the target page.
Make the thumbnail reliable and interpretable
- Match Playwright and its browser binaries. Playwright requires browser binaries corresponding to its version. After updating Playwright, reinstall browsers with
npx playwright install, as described in the browser documentation. - Use an explicit viewport. Set width and height in
browser.newContext()so repeated captures use the same layout dimensions. - Pick a wait condition for the page.
networkidlewaits for network activity to settle, but pages with long-running requests may not reach it. For those sites, use a suitable load state or wait for a page-specific selector before capturing; do not interpret a timeout as proof that the certificate bypass failed. - Label what was captured. Record the Playwright version, browser, target URL, and whether the output is rendered site content or an error state. That makes later comparisons meaningful and helps distinguish a page failure from a browser warning.
Troubleshooting

No. It changes how the automation context handles the browser’s certificate error; the site certificate remains unchanged.

Can Playwright capture Chrome’s certificate warning page?
Do not assume so. A page screenshot captures page content, and the cited documentation does not establish a reliable cross-browser method for capturing browser-generated interstitials.
Is a client certificate the same as ignoring a certificate error?
No. Client certificates support TLS client authentication when the server requests one; they do not correct server certificate problems.
