To capture only the part of a subscription article currently on screen, use Firefox’s Save visible screenshot option, or select the article area with your device’s built-in screenshot tool. These methods capture what is displayed; they do not grant permission to republish it.
Choose a method for your device

Capture the visible page in Firefox
- Open the article and scroll until the passage you want is visible.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. Or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Select Save visible to capture the portion currently displayed in the browser viewport.
- Use the save or copy option shown to keep the screenshot.
Firefox also offers selected-region and full-page capture. For just the visible article passage, select Save visible. Mozilla’s instructions, updated June 15, 2026, describe this option as capturing the currently visible area: Firefox screenshots.
Capture a selected area on Windows
- Arrange the browser so the passage you want is on screen.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- Select the rectangular snip option, then drag around the article portion.
- Open the Snipping Tool notification to edit or save the copied snip.
Windows can capture a window or the full screen as well. A rectangular snip is useful when you want to exclude browser tabs or other desktop content. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.
Capture a selected area on Mac
- Position the passage on screen.
- Press Shift-Command-4, drag the crosshair around the area, and release.
- Use the screenshot thumbnail to edit, or wait for the screenshot to save to the desktop.
Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot controls panel instead. Apple notes that some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow screenshots; its Mac support page was published March 27, 2026. See Take a screenshot on your Mac.

Take a screenshot on iPhone
- Face ID model: Quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together.
- Touch ID model: Quickly press and release the side button and Home button together.
Tap the preview to edit, save, or share. Apple’s device instructions are at Take a screenshot on your iPhone.
Keep the capture focused and respect access limits
- Frame only the passage you need. A tight selection helps avoid including unrelated personal information, browser tabs, or account details.
- Check that the text is legible before relying on the image; adjust the browser size or selection if necessary.
- A screenshot is an image of what is on screen, not automatic permission to redistribute the article. Check the publisher’s terms and applicable rights before sharing.
- If a service or app blocks capture, do not try to defeat that restriction. Use publisher-provided save, print, or reading options where available.
Permissions depend on the publisher, purpose, and applicable jurisdiction; the sources cited here do not establish a universal rule for screenshots of subscription content. For example, W3C’s screenshot permission applies to W3C material and its stated conditions, not to other publishers’ articles: W3C document license.
