Steamworks can capture screenshots for you or let your game take control of the capture. For the simplest setup, leave screenshot handling with Steam: the Steam Overlay’s screenshot hotkey is F12 by default, and Steam adds the image to the player’s local screenshot library. If your game must choose the exact frame or submit its own rendered image, enable screenshot hooking with HookScreenshots(true), handle ScreenshotRequested_t, and submit the result with WriteScreenshot or AddScreenshotToLibrary.

Both approaches require the Steam Overlay to be active. The implementation below explains the choice, the callback flow, image requirements, metadata, and common failure cases.

Choose who captures the frame

The central decision is whether Steam or your game should produce the image. Steam’s documented screenshot system is exposed by the Steamworks ISteamScreenshots interface, accessed through SteamScreenshots(). It adds captures to the user’s local Steam screenshot library and supports attaching metadata after a successful save.

Approach Who captures the image? When to use it What your game must do
Default Steam handling Steam responds to its screenshot hotkey and captures the game. The ordinary game frame is the desired screenshot and you do not need a custom capture pipeline. Initialize Steamworks and process callbacks if you need to react to screenshot completion or attach metadata.
Hooked handling Your game handles each screenshot request and supplies the image. You need to select or process the frame yourself, or otherwise own screenshot production. Call HookScreenshots(true), respond to ScreenshotRequested_t, and submit image data or a file.

Hooking is disabled by default. Steam’s hotkey is F12 by default, and users can change it in Steam’s In-Game settings. The Steam Overlay must be active for the Screenshots system to be available; if it is disabled or cannot appear in the game, do not expect this API flow to work.

Set up the Steamworks interface and callbacks

Use the Steamworks SDK and the initialization and callback-dispatch pattern already used by your game. Once Steamworks is initialized and the interface is available, obtain it with SteamScreenshots(). Callback processing matters: screenshot completion is asynchronous, so the return from a submission call is not proof that the image was saved.

The following is an integration sketch showing the relevant callback shape. Place it in a class that lives for the game session, initialize it after Steamworks is available, and adapt callback registration to the callback mechanism and language conventions used by your project:

class ScreenshotManager {
public:
    ScreenshotManager() : m_screenshots(SteamScreenshots()) {}

    void EnableGameCapture() {
        if (m_screenshots) {
            m_screenshots->HookScreenshots(true);
        }
    }

    void RequestCapture() {
        if (m_screenshots) {
            m_screenshots->TriggerScreenshot();
        }
    }

    void OnScreenshotRequested(ScreenshotRequested_t* callback) {
        // Capture the desired frame, then submit it with WriteScreenshot()
        // or AddScreenshotToLibrary().
    }

    void OnScreenshotReady(ScreenshotReady_t* callback) {
        if (callback->m_eResult != k_EResultOK ||
            callback->m_hLocal == INVALID_SCREENSHOT_HANDLE) {
            // Handle failed save; do not attach metadata.
            return;
        }
        // callback->m_hLocal is valid for this game process.
    }

private:
    ISteamScreenshots* m_screenshots;
    // Register ScreenshotRequested_t and ScreenshotReady_t callbacks
    // using the callback system already used by your Steamworks integration.
};

This sketch is not a standalone application: Steamworks initialization, callback dispatch, and registration must be supplied by the surrounding game. Keep the manager and any screenshot handle you use for metadata within the game process; a screenshot handle is not a persistent identifier to store and reuse in a later launch.

Capture with Steam or request a capture in code

With default handling, leave screenshot hooking off. The player presses Steam’s configured hotkey, and Steam handles the capture and library addition. Your game can still process ScreenshotReady_t as documented, for example if it needs to add metadata after the save succeeds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a programmatic capture point or an in-game capture button, call TriggerScreenshot(). Its effect depends on hook state:

  • Hooking off: Steam’s overlay screenshot system handles the capture.
  • Hooking on: the game’s screenshot manager is told that a screenshot is needed. Handle ScreenshotRequested_t and submit the resulting image yourself.

Do not turn on hooking unless your game is prepared to answer screenshot requests. Otherwise the game has taken responsibility for a capture it may not actually provide.

Submit a rendered image or an existing file

Send raw RGB pixels with WriteScreenshot

Use WriteScreenshot(void *pubRGB, uint32 cubRGB, int nWidth, int nHeight) when your renderer or capture pipeline already has the pixels in memory. The buffer must contain raw RGB image data; cubRGB is its byte count, and the dimensions describe the image. For tightly packed 8-bit RGB pixels, validate that the allocation matches the dimensions and three color bytes per pixel before calling the API. Do not pass a compressed PNG or JPEG buffer to this method: it expects RGB data.

// rgbPixels must point to the captured raw RGB pixels.
// width and height must describe that buffer.
uint32 byteCount = static_cast<uint32>(width * height * 3);
ScreenshotHandle handle = SteamScreenshots()->WriteScreenshot(
    rgbPixels, byteCount, width, height);

// A returned handle is not confirmation of a successful disk save.
// Wait for ScreenshotReady_t and inspect its result.

Ensure the buffer remains valid for the API call, dimensions are positive and correspond to the actual buffer, and byte-count arithmetic cannot overflow before narrowing to the API’s uint32 argument. These are application-side validation steps; the documented API contract is RGB data, byte count, width, and height.

Wait for save completion before adding metadata

Screenshot submission is asynchronous. Process ScreenshotReady_t, inspect its EResult, and proceed only when the result indicates success and the returned local handle is not INVALID_SCREENSHOT_HANDLE (zero). Documented failure outcomes include failure to load or parse the image and disk I/O failure.

After a successful save, use the returned handle for supported metadata calls:

  • TagUser associates a Steam user with the screenshot; the listed maximum is 32 users per screenshot.
  • TagPublishedFile associates a Workshop item; the listed maximum is 32 Workshop items per screenshot.

These calls depend on the successful save handle. Do not attach tags in the request callback or immediately after submission as if the screenshot were already saved. The handle is valid only for the duration of the game process, so complete the metadata work during that process and do not treat it as a durable ID.

Troubleshoot captures that do not appear

  • No screenshot request or overlay capture: confirm the Steam Overlay is active for the game. For default handling, check that the user has not disabled or otherwise made the overlay unavailable. The hotkey defaults to F12, but it can be changed in Steam’s In-Game settings.
  • TriggerScreenshot() does not produce an image: check whether hooking is enabled. With hooking on, the game must handle ScreenshotRequested_t and submit the image; Steam does not simply perform the ordinary default capture for that request.
  • Image submission fails: inspect ScreenshotReady_t and its result rather than assuming the submission call completed the save. For AddScreenshotToLibrary, verify the file exists, the path is absolute, and the file is JPG, PNG, or TGA. The callback’s documented failure categories include load/parse and disk I/O failures.
  • Raw submission is invalid: verify that WriteScreenshot receives raw RGB pixels, not encoded image bytes, and that the byte count and dimensions match the buffer.
  • Thumbnail causes trouble: omit the thumbnail filename to let Steam generate one, or supply one that is exactly 200 pixels wide and matches the screenshot’s aspect ratio.
  • Metadata is missing: wait for a successful ready callback, use that callback’s local handle, and make the metadata call while the handle is still valid in the current game process.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

The documented interface describes capture control and asynchronous save completion, but it does not establish a performance benchmark or a guarantee that every capture will succeed. Design your game so screenshot requests do not block the render loop waiting for disk completion; submit the image and use the callback to handle the result. If your own pipeline renders or encodes a file, account for that work separately in your game’s capture path.

The useful reliability signal is the completion callback and its result. Treat failed loads, parse errors, and disk I/O errors as recoverable capture failures, not proof that the user has a screenshot. The documentation does not specify a Steam API charge for screenshots; the method adds captures to the Steam user’s local screenshot library.

For website screenshots, use a browser screenshot API instead

The Steamworks API above captures a game frame for a Steam user’s screenshot library. It is not a way to render a website URL. If your task is to capture web pages from a developer workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server; it is not a replacement for Steam’s in-game screenshot system.
