Use Selenium’s Ruby save_screenshot method after the browser reaches the state you want to record. It writes the current viewport as a PNG; use full_page: true only when the active driver supports full-page capture, or use screenshot_as when your application needs PNG bytes or Base64 in memory.
Save a Selenium screenshot in Ruby
Install the Ruby binding, start a WebDriver, navigate, wait for the page state you need, and save the viewport:

endsave_screenshot("tmp/example.png") records the browser’s current viewport and writes PNG data to that path. Create tmp first if it does not exist, and make sure the process can write there. Use a filename ending in .png; Selenium warns when the extension does not match PNG.
Capture the right browser state
A screenshot is a point-in-time recording. Selenium does not wait for a visual state automatically when save_screenshot runs. Navigate, perform clicks or form actions, and wait for the content that must appear before taking the shot.

Wait for an element before capture

endChoose a selector that represents the finished state rather than waiting for an arbitrary sleep. If the page contains animations, lazy images, or data loaded after the initial document, wait for the relevant element and, when necessary, for its text or attributes to reach the expected value.
Interact before taking the shot

Take a full-page screenshot
Pass full_page: true when you need the document beyond the visible viewport:

The Ruby implementation checks whether the driver responds to save_full_page_screenshot and raises Selenium::WebDriver::Error::UnsupportedOperationError when it does not. Check support before requesting it and provide a viewport fallback:

endA capability check reduces surprises when the same test runs with a different browser, driver, remote session, or grid node. Even with support, very tall pages can create large images and may take longer than a viewport shot.
Return PNG bytes or Base64 without writing a file
Use screenshot_as when you need to upload the image, attach it to a test report, or embed it elsewhere:

If it is unavailable, crop a full viewport image in your own image pipeline or capture with a service that supports CSS-selector targeting.

Use a reliable Ruby capture wrapper
Put driver cleanup in ensure so a failed navigation, timeout, or screenshot does not leave a browser process running. Return the path or bytes your test runner needs:

Keep artifact names unique in parallel runs, for example by including the test name and timestamp, and avoid sharing one driver instance between concurrent examples.

Performance, reliability, and storage considerations
- Capture late, not repeatedly: screenshots involve browser and image encoding work. Take only the artifacts needed for assertions or diagnostics.
- Control dimensions: set a consistent window size when comparing images. A different viewport changes responsive layout and therefore the pixels.
- Prefer bytes for pipelines:
screenshot_as(:png)avoids a temporary file when an uploader or test reporter accepts binary data. Base64 is convenient in JSON or HTML but increases payload size compared with raw bytes. - Protect sensitive data: screenshots can contain account details, tokens displayed in a page, or personal information. Restrict artifact access and remove files according to your test-retention policy.
- Use cleanup on every path: an
ensureblock prevents orphaned browser processes and makes repeated captures more predictable. - Expect full-page trade-offs: a tall page produces a larger image and can expose driver-specific limitations. Use viewport shots when a full document is not required.
