In Power Automate Desktop, choose the screenshot action that matches what you need to capture: use Workstation > Take screenshot for a screen or foreground window, UI automation > Take screenshot of UI element for a desktop control, and Browser automation > Take screenshot of web page for a webpage or web element. Each action can save its result to a file or the clipboard. The key is to use the correct action group: desktop UI elements and browser UI elements are different types and are not interchangeable.
Which Power Automate Desktop screenshot action should you use?

Use the Workstation action when the target is what appears on a monitor or in the foreground window. Use the UI automation action when you want a desktop application’s individual UI element. Use the browser action when the flow already has a browser instance and the target is the page or an element in it. The browser action is not simply another way to capture the foreground window: it uses a browser instance and offers page-versus-element scope.
How to take a screenshot in Power Automate Desktop
Capture a screen or the foreground window
- In the flow designer, locate Workstation > Take screenshot and add the action at the point in the flow where you want the capture.
- In Capture, select All screens, Primary screen, Select screen, or Foreground window. Choose the scope that matches what the next step needs to inspect or store.
- In Save screenshot to, choose File or Clipboard. For a file, enter the complete image-file path in Image file, rather than only a folder.
- Choose an Image format. Microsoft’s action reference lists BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, and WMF for this action. BMP is the documented default; check the action’s settings in your installed Power Automate Desktop version before relying on a default.
- Run the flow and inspect the configured destination. If using a file, make the filename extension consistent with the selected format and use a destination the flow can write to.
For example, if you select a PNG format, specify a filename ending in .png in a writable location. A folder path alone is not the requested image-file path. A capture or save failure is a documented exception for this action.
Capture a desktop application’s UI element
- Use the element selected for desktop UI automation, then add UI automation > Take screenshot of UI element.
- Set the action’s UI element input to the desktop control you intend to capture. Do not pass a web UI element selected through browser automation; the two element types belong to different action groups.
- Select File or Clipboard. For file output, provide the image-file path and choose the available format in the action.
- Run the flow. In file mode, the action produces an ImageFile variable containing the generated screenshot image path.
If the action cannot retrieve the chosen element, save the image, or take the screenshot, it can fail. Confirm that the target is the intended desktop UI element and that the configured output destination is usable.

Capture a browser page or web element
- Use the browser instance that the flow is automating and add Browser automation > Take screenshot of web page.
- Choose Entire web page to capture the page, or Specific element to capture one web element.
- Choose File or Clipboard. If saving to a file, enter the image-file path and choose the format in the action.
- Run the flow and check the result. For a specific element, confirm that the selected web element or CSS selector still identifies an element on the page.
The browser action can report a missing CSS-selected element, a file-save or clipboard-save failure, or a screenshot failure. These are distinct from the workstation action’s screen and foreground-window choices.
How to save a screenshot to a file or clipboard
All three documented screenshot routes offer file and clipboard destinations. Select File when a later flow step or an operator needs a persistent image at a path; select Clipboard when the next operation is intended to use the copied image. File mode requires an image-file path. The desktop UI-element action additionally returns an ImageFile variable containing that path.

- For file output: enter a full filename and path, not just a directory. Make the extension agree with the chosen format, and verify that the destination is writable.
- For clipboard output: select Clipboard in the action rather than entering a file path. If clipboard saving fails, the documented exception may be specific to the clipboard route.
- For format selection: use the formats shown by the particular action in your installed version. The eight-format list and BMP default cited above apply to the Workstation action reference.
How to capture only a UI element
First decide whether the target is a desktop control or a control inside a web page. For a desktop application, use UI automation > Take screenshot of UI element and provide a desktop UI element. For a browser page, use Browser automation > Take screenshot of web page and select Specific element. A missing target can prevent the browser action from capturing the selected element; if the target is a desktop element, the UI automation action can fail to retrieve it.
This distinction is more than a naming detail: Microsoft treats desktop UI elements and web UI elements as separate types for their corresponding action groups. If the action rejects an element or cannot find it, check that it was selected using the matching desktop or browser automation tools.

Use screenshots to investigate an unattended flow failure
To see what the workstation displayed around a failure, Microsoft recommends saving one screenshot immediately before the failing step and another immediately after it in an unattended flow. The images give an operator before-and-after views for investigation; screenshots are a diagnostic aid, not a guarantee that they will identify the root cause.
- Identify the action that is failing in the unattended flow.
- Insert a screenshot action directly before that action and configure it to save to a file. Use a filename that clearly identifies the image as the capture before the failure.
- Insert another screenshot action directly after the failing action and save it to a different file with a filename that identifies it as the after image.
- Run the flow and inspect both saved images to understand what was displayed around the failure.
- After diagnosis, restore the flow’s original On error behavior.
Use the capture action appropriate to what you need to see. A workstation screenshot records a screen or foreground window; a UI-element or browser-page screenshot is a narrower capture when the target is a specific control or web page.

Troubleshooting common screenshot problems
The desktop UI-element screenshot cannot find its target
The desktop action lists failure to retrieve the UI element as a possible exception. Confirm that the selected element is the intended desktop control and that the action is using a desktop UI element rather than a web element. If the flow is targeting a browser control, use the browser screenshot action instead.
The browser screenshot says the element is missing
The browser action lists a missing CSS-selected element as an exception. Check that the intended web element or CSS selector still identifies an element on the page, then select the correct scope: Specific element for one element or Entire web page for the page.

The screenshot is not saved to the expected file
Check that the action is set to File, that the image-file field contains a full filename and path, and that the destination is writable. Make the extension match the selected format. Saving to a file can fail in each of the three action groups.
Clipboard output fails
Verify that Clipboard is selected as the destination. Clipboard-save failure is a documented exception for the screenshot actions. If the flow specifically requires a persistent image file and clipboard saving is not necessary, configure file output instead.
The captured area is not the one you intended
Review the action group and scope. The Workstation action offers screen or foreground-window capture; the desktop UI automation action targets a desktop element; and the browser action uses a browser instance with whole-page or specific-element scope. Choosing a different scope within the wrong action group will not change the target type.
