To capture a screenshot with MCP, configure the official Playwright MCP server in your MCP client, navigate to the page, and call browser_take_screenshot. Use no target for the current viewport, target for one element, or fullPage: true for the entire scrollable page. Add filename to save the image; omit it to receive the image inline.
This guide covers setup, element targeting, full-page captures, image formats, resolution, file locations, troubleshooting, and an API alternative when you do not want to maintain a browser session.
What you need
- Node.js 20 or newer.
- An MCP client such as Claude, Cursor, or another client that supports MCP servers.
- The official Playwright MCP package, started with
npx @playwright/mcp@latest.
Playwright MCP can run headed by default or headless with its headless option. It supports Chromium-family browsers, Firefox, WebKit, and Edge, along with persistent sessions. Separately managed or headed deployments can use HTTP transport, and an existing Chromium instance can be reached through a CDP endpoint.
Configure the Playwright MCP server
Add a server entry to your MCP client’s configuration. The exact configuration-file location and JSON wrapper differ between clients, but the command is the same:

}Save the configuration, restart or reload the MCP client, and confirm that Playwright tools appear. If your client supports a graphical server manager, create a server named playwright, choose the npx executable, and enter @playwright/mcp@latest as its argument.
Headless and remote operation
For a server that must run without a desktop, add the documented --headless option to the arguments. Use HTTP transport when the MCP client and browser service are managed separately. If a browser is already running, configure the server to connect to its Chrome DevTools Protocol endpoint instead of launching a new browser.
Security warning for browser code
The browser_run_code_unsafe tool executes arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process and is equivalent to remote-code execution. Enable it only for MCP clients you trust, and do not expose an unrestricted server to untrusted users or networks.
Capture a viewport screenshot
- Ask the MCP client to open the target URL, for example
https://example.com. - Wait for the page to finish the navigation or for the content you need to appear.
- Call
browser_take_screenshotwithout atargetorfullPageoption.
The default result is an image of the current viewport. To persist it, provide a filename:

}The path is interpreted by the MCP server’s environment. A relative path is therefore saved relative to the server process’s working directory, not necessarily the folder containing your MCP client. Use an absolute path or a known shared artifact directory when another process must consume the file. If you omit filename, the image is returned inline in the tool response rather than saved as a file.

Capture a full-page screenshot

}Playwright scrolls through the page as needed and captures the complete scrollable document, including content that is initially below the fold. Lazy-loaded images may need time to load before capture. If the page reveals content only after interaction, perform that interaction first and then call the screenshot tool.
Do not combine target and fullPage. They represent different capture scopes: one element versus the whole document.
Screenshot one element
Use the accessibility snapshot before taking an element screenshot. Call browser_snapshot to inspect roles, names, text, and stable element references. Then pass the chosen reference or a selector as target:

}Prefer a snapshot reference when the page exposes one; it is tied to the current accessibility tree and avoids guessing at complex selectors. Re-run the snapshot after major page changes, navigation, or modal interactions because references can become stale.

A screenshot is for looking at; a snapshot is for understanding and operating the page. Use both when you must locate an element and then document its appearance.
Reliable capture workflow
- Navigate. Open the exact URL and wait for navigation to settle.
- Establish state. Accept a required consent dialog, sign in through an approved test account, or set the viewport and browser context needed for the capture.
- Inspect. Run
browser_snapshotwhen you need a control reference or want to confirm that the expected content exists. - Interact. Click tabs, expand accordions, or dismiss overlays before taking the image.
- Capture. Choose viewport, element, or full page. Set the output type and filename explicitly for repeatable jobs.
- Verify. Check that the returned image is non-empty, has the expected dimensions, and contains the intended state.
Handling dynamic pages
Do not capture immediately after navigation when the page uses client-side rendering, animations, or lazy loading. Wait for a meaningful element through the MCP interaction tools, or pause until the content is stable. For a full-page image, scroll or otherwise trigger lazy loading before capture if the site does not load below-the-fold assets automatically.

The Playwright tools do not appear
Cause: The MCP client has not reloaded its configuration, Node.js is too old, or npx cannot download the package.
Fix: Confirm Node.js is version 20 or newer, run npx @playwright/mcp@latest in the same environment, inspect the client’s server log, and restart the client after editing its configuration.
The screenshot is returned inline but no file exists
Cause: No filename was supplied, or the path was relative to an unexpected server working directory.

Fix: Supply an absolute path or a documented artifact path. Remember that the MCP server, not the client UI, writes the file.

An element target cannot be found
Cause: The selector changed, the snapshot reference became stale, or the element is inside a state that has not been opened.
Fix: Run browser_snapshot again, open the relevant dialog or tab, and use the new reference. Prefer a specific, stable CSS selector over a brittle positional selector.
The full-page image is missing content
Cause: Lazy loading, delayed API responses, sticky overlays, or an image captured before rendering completed.
Fix: Wait for the content, scroll through the page to trigger lazy loads, close overlays, and capture again. If only one region is required, target that element instead of forcing a very tall document capture.

The page is blank or blocked
Cause: The site may require authentication, reject automation, depend on a browser feature, or be unreachable from the server’s network.

Fix: Test the URL in the same browser context, provide the required approved session state, connect through the correct CDP endpoint, and inspect navigation errors. Do not attempt to bypass access controls.
The image is too large
Cause: Full-page capture and device scale multiply pixel dimensions.
Fix: Capture the needed element, use the default scale, choose JPEG or WebP where appropriate, or split a very long document into logical regions.

- Viewport versus full page: viewport captures are faster and smaller; full-page captures provide document context but require more rendering and memory.
- Element versus full page: an element target reduces noise and output size, while a full page is better for archival or layout review.
- Persistent sessions: useful for repeated authenticated captures, but protect the profile because it can contain cookies and local storage.
- Headless operation: suitable for CI and servers without a display; headed mode is useful while diagnosing layout or interaction problems.
- Output naming: include a page or test identifier and a timestamp supplied by your job runner so parallel captures do not overwrite one another.
- Reproducibility: fix viewport, browser engine, scale, color mode, authentication state, and timing conditions when comparing screenshots.
