Use Chrome DevTools MCP’s take_screenshot tool to capture the visible page, a full page, or a specific element in a connected Chrome browser. The tool requires the target tab’s current pageId; save the result with filePath or receive it in the MCP response. This guide reflects the Chrome DevTools MCP documentation checked on October 3, 2026; command names and setup can change, so use the current setup instructions for your MCP client.
What you need before taking a screenshot
- Node.js LTS and npm.
- Current stable Google Chrome or Chrome for Testing. Other Chromium browsers may work, but are not officially guaranteed.
- An MCP-compatible coding agent or client configured to launch or connect to Chrome DevTools MCP.
Use the Chrome for Developers getting-started guide for client-specific setup. The project’s general configuration launches npx -y chrome-devtools-mcp@latest, but configuration files and client setup routes differ. Do not assume one JSON snippet or location applies to every MCP client. See the project repository for supported browsers and current requirements.
Capture a screenshot with Chrome DevTools MCP
- Configure and start the server. Follow the official setup path for your MCP client and make sure Chrome is available to it.
- Open the page. Use the browser tools exposed by the server to select or navigate to the target page. Screenshot capture is page-scoped; note the current page’s
pageId. - Call
take_screenshot. Omituidand leavefullPagefalse or unset for the visible viewport. UsefullPage: truefor the whole page, or pass a current snapshot element’suidto capture that element. - Choose whether to save the output. Set
filePathto write it to an allowed path. If you omit it, the image is attached to the tool response.
The following MCP-style example illustrates the documented fields. The page ID is an example only; use the ID from your current browser session.

Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture
Visible viewport
Call take_screenshot with the relevant pageId, leaving uid and fullPage unset. This captures the currently visible page area rather than scrolling the full document.
Full page
Set fullPage: true to capture the page beyond the current viewport. This mode cannot be combined with uid.

One element
Take a page snapshot, find the target element’s current uid, then pass it to take_screenshot. The identifier belongs to the snapshot and page state from which it came; use a new snapshot if navigation or page updates may have changed the content.

Choose PNG when fidelity is the priority; choose JPEG or WebP when smaller output matters and compression is acceptable. The project’s configuration documentation describes the size and dimension options; no format is declared universally best.
Optional browser connection and server configuration
You do not need to configure these options for every screenshot. They are useful when the default browser setup does not fit your workflow:

- Connect to an existing Chrome session: the configuration docs describe
--browser-url, including a loopback endpoint example on port9222, and a WebSocket endpoint. - Run headless: headless mode is documented as an optional configuration choice.
- Use an isolated profile: the server can use temporary browser profiles, which can help keep automation separate from a regular browsing profile.
- Restrict image dimensions: set the maximum screenshot width and/or height if large images are consuming too much context.
- Control telemetry: usage-statistics collection is enabled by default and can be disabled with
--no-usage-statistics. The project says this tool telemetry is independent of Chrome browser metrics; its configuration docs also identify CI and an environment variable as conditions that disable collection.
Consult the official configuration reference for the current syntax and filesystem settings before changing server access.
Save-path access and security
filePath writes only where the server is allowed to write. By default, if the MCP client does not negotiate filesystem roots, file-writing tools are restricted to the operating system’s temporary directory. Check the configured roots and path restrictions if a requested output path fails; avoid granting unrestricted filesystem access just to save one image.

The Chrome DevTools MCP project warns that it “exposes content of the browser instance to the MCP clients allowing them to inspect, debug, and modify any data in the browser or DevTools.” An agent connected to an authenticated browser may act on your behalf. Prefer a deliberate, isolated session and avoid exposing sensitive pages or personal data to an agent unless that access is appropriate. Troubleshooting screenshot failures
The tool cannot find the page
Make sure the target tab is open in the browser controlled by the server, then use that tab’s current pageId. A page ID is session-specific; do not reuse an example or an ID from an earlier browser session.
An element capture fails or targets the wrong element
Take a fresh page snapshot and select the UID for the intended element in that snapshot. The UID can become stale when the page changes. For a whole-page capture, remove uid and set fullPage: true; the two modes are incompatible.
The screenshot file is not created
Confirm that filePath is set and that the requested directory is among the server’s permitted filesystem roots. If roots were not negotiated, try a path in the operating system’s temporary directory or adjust the configured roots narrowly.

The output is too large
Use JPEG or WebP with an appropriate quality value, or configure --screenshotMaxWidth and/or --screenshotMaxHeight. Lower dimensions reduce detail, so check that text and interface elements remain legible for the intended use.
The server cannot connect to Chrome
Confirm that Chrome or Chrome for Testing is installed and available. If connecting to an existing debuggable instance, verify that the browser URL or WebSocket endpoint matches the active session and the current configuration instructions.
