While recording a game or app with Xbox Game Bar, press Windows+Alt+Print Screen to capture a screenshot. Windows saves the still image as a PNG in the Captures folder. For a separately selected still-image area, press Windows+Shift+S to open Snipping Tool; for a selected rectangular video recording, press Windows+Shift+R.
Capture a screenshot during an Xbox Game Bar recording
Xbox Game Bar is the documented Windows route when you want a still image of the game or app that you are recording. You can begin recording first, wait for the moment you want, and use the screenshot shortcut without stopping the clip.
1. Start or continue the recording
- Open the game or app you want to record and bring it to the foreground.
- Press Windows+Alt+R to start recording. Press the same shortcut again when you want to stop.
- If you need microphone narration, press Windows+Alt+M to turn the microphone on or off while the recording is running.
Game Bar’s Capturing settings also let you choose system-audio behavior. Configure that before recording if the clip needs application sound. Audio choices do not change how the screenshot is saved.
2. Take the still image
When the desired frame is visible, press Windows+Alt+Print Screen. Game Bar captures the game or app target and continues the recording. The screenshot is a PNG, while the recording itself is an MP4.

3. Find the files
Open the Captures folder to find the PNG. The MP4 recording is stored under VideosCaptures. If you have changed Windows’ capture-storage location, use that customized location instead of the default folders.
Use Snipping Tool when you need a selected area
Snipping Tool is a better fit when the screenshot should contain only part of the desktop, a single window, or a carefully framed rectangle. Its image and video commands are separate from the Game Bar screenshot shortcut.
Take a selected still image
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- When the Snipping Tool overlay appears, choose the rectangular, window, full-screen, or other available snip mode.
- Select the area or window. Use the notification or Snipping Tool editor to annotate, copy, save, or share the image.
This workflow creates an independent snip rather than a screenshot specifically tied to the Game Bar recording. It is useful when the recording shows a full application but the documentation needs only one panel or dialog.
Record a selected rectangular region
- Press Windows+Shift+R, or open Snipping Tool, choose Record, and select New.
- Drag around the portion of the screen to record.
- Start the snip, perform the action, then stop and save the video. You can also open the result in Clipchamp for editing.
Microsoft introduced Snipping Tool’s built-in screen recorder for Windows 11 devices in 2023. Labels and the exact overlay presentation can vary by Windows release, so use the visible Record and New commands if the shortcut behaves differently.

Choose the Windows workflow that matches the output

Use Game Bar when the still must correspond to the game or app recording. Use Snipping Tool when framing matters more than keeping the screenshot associated with that recording. Microsoft also lists Clipchamp as an editing-oriented recording alternative, but it is not required for either basic capture method.
Shortcut reference
- Windows+Alt+Print Screen: capture the Game Bar game or app target as a PNG.
- Windows+Alt+R: start or stop a Game Bar recording.
- Windows+Alt+M: toggle the microphone during Game Bar recording.
- Windows+Shift+S: open the Snipping Tool image overlay.
- Windows+Shift+R: start the Snipping Tool selected-region video workflow.
- Print Screen: capture the full screen to the clipboard. Paste it into an image editor or document before closing or replacing the clipboard contents.
An external keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key is optional for the documented Windows shortcuts. On compact keyboards, the key may be combined with another key, so check the keyboard’s printed Fn-layer label if Print Screen does not respond.
Prevent lost frames and confusing results
Prepare the scene before recording
- Open the exact game or app window and dismiss notifications that could appear in the frame.
- Decide whether you need the complete application view or only a region. This determines whether Game Bar or Snipping Tool is the better choice.
- Leave enough free storage for the MP4. A screenshot is a single PNG, but a recording grows for as long as capture continues.
Use deliberate timing
Game Bar captures the frame visible when the hotkey is recognized. Pause briefly after a menu opens or an animation settles, then press the shortcut. For a Snipping Tool image, make the selection after the interface is stable and confirm the thumbnail or editor notification before moving on.
Keep the two outputs separate
The screenshot and video are separate files. Name or move the PNG immediately when producing many captures, and keep the MP4 in its recording folder until you have verified that the still shows the intended moment.

Troubleshoot common problems
The Game Bar shortcut does nothing
- Confirm that the intended game or app is focused; the Game Bar shortcut is documented for that target, not as a universal desktop-region selector.
- Open Game Bar with Windows+G and check that capture controls are available.
- If the keyboard has a shared Print Screen key, try its Fn combination.
- Use Windows+Shift+S when you need a still of the desktop or a selected area rather than the Game Bar target.
The screenshot is not where expected
Check Captures for the PNG and VideosCaptures for the MP4. If those folders are empty, look for a customized capture location in Windows’ Game Bar or Capturing settings. Verify that the hotkey produced a capture notification before searching for a file.
The image includes too much of the screen
That is expected when using Game Bar’s game-or-app capture. Take a separate Snipping Tool image with Windows+Shift+S and drag around the required region.
You need a video of only one rectangle
Do not use Game Bar’s app-target shortcut for this requirement. Press Windows+Shift+R or choose Snipping Tool’s Record > New, then draw the rectangle before recording.
The recording has the wrong audio
Open Game Bar’s Capturing settings and review system-audio selection before starting the clip. The microphone can be toggled independently with Windows+Alt+M; changing it does not alter the screenshot file type or destination.

A capture overlay appears unexpectedly
Windows documents these commands as separate workflows, but it does not guarantee identical overlay behavior across every recording tool, app, or Windows version. If an overlay is visible in a particular application, try the other built-in workflow, allow the interface to close before pressing the capture key, or crop the resulting still with Snipping Tool.

Final choice
For a screenshot of the game or app currently being recorded, use Windows+Alt+Print Screen and retrieve the PNG from Captures. For a cropped still, use Windows+Shift+S; for a cropped video, use Windows+Shift+R. Treat these as distinct Windows workflows, and choose the one whose target and output match what you need.
