Keep the entire message, address, time and any request identifier in the image, then send the evidence to the site owner or support team. A screenshot records the response you received; it does not unlock the protected page or prove why access was denied.
Capture the denial page in your regular browser
Your browser’s built-in screenshot command is usually the most faithful record because it shows the response delivered to your device, including any session, network or browser context that affected it.
Windows
- Press Windows+Shift+S and choose a rectangular or full-screen snip, or press Print Screen if your system is configured to copy the whole display.
- Include the browser toolbar if it contains the address, but do not crop out the error text, code, Ray ID or other diagnostic details.
- Open the preview, save the original PNG, and avoid editing the source file.
macOS
- Press Shift+Command+5 to choose a window, selected portion or full-screen capture.
- Capture the browser message and, where practical, the address bar and system clock.
- Save the untouched image before making a copy for annotation.
iPhone and iPad
On Face ID models, press the side button and volume-up button together. On models with a Home button, press the Home and side (or top) button together. Tap the thumbnail to review that the denial text and address are visible, then save it to Photos or Files.
Android
Most current devices use the power and volume-down buttons together. Some manufacturers provide a Screenshot command in Quick Settings. Use the device’s scrolling option only if it does not hide the error details; a normal, readable frame is more useful than an excessively tall image.

Preserve the details that make the image useful
Save the original file with a descriptive name such as example.com-403-2026-09-29-1432.png. In a separate note, record:
- The complete URL, including the path and query string if present.
- Your local date, time and time zone.
- The browser name and version, operating system, and whether you were on a VPN, corporate network or mobile connection.
- The exact text of the response, such as “HTTP ERROR 403,” “Access to www.netflix.com was denied,” or “Error 1020: Access denied.”
- Any request, incident or Ray ID. Cloudflare’s 1020 page may show a Ray ID that the site owner can search in Security Events along with the client IP.
- What you had done immediately before the block: opening the page, submitting a form, signing in or following a link.
Keep the untouched image and notes. Make a marked-up copy only when an arrow or highlight helps support staff find a value; never overwrite the original.
What common denial messages mean
HTTP 403 or “Access denied”
HTTP 403 means the server or an intermediary refused the request. The message alone does not identify whether the cause was permissions, an allow-list, geography, a security rule, an expired session or suspected automation. Treat it as evidence, not a diagnosis.
Cloudflare Error 1020
Cloudflare defines Error 1020 as access denied by a Cloudflare firewall rule. Its visitor guidance is explicit: “If you are not the website owner, provide the website owner with a screenshot of the 1020 error message you received.” Send the image and Ray ID, if displayed, through the site’s support channel: Cloudflare’s Error 1020 guidance.

A CAPTCHA is an anti-bot check, not a page-load error. If it appears in your normal browser, use the visible, intended interaction. If the widget is broken, Google recommends updating the browser, enabling JavaScript and disabling conflicting plugins; contact the site webmaster when the integration itself appears faulty. Do not repeatedly refresh or automate attempts to defeat the challenge.

Login prompt
A login page generally means the resource requires an account or an active session. Sign in through the site’s normal flow if you are entitled to view it. A screenshot of the prompt can show that authentication was requested, but it cannot establish that you had permission to proceed.
Blank or partially rendered page
A white image, missing elements or an incomplete layout can indicate blocked scripts, a failed dependency or automation detection. Try one ordinary reload, check JavaScript and extensions, and compare a private window or another permitted network. If the page remains blank, capture that state rather than claiming the target content was present.
Send the evidence to the site owner
- Use the site’s help form, support email or account support link. For a Cloudflare 1020 response, the site owner—not Cloudflare’s visitor—is normally the party that can inspect and change the firewall rule.
- Attach the original image and provide the URL, timestamp, time zone, browser, network context and any Ray or request ID.
- Describe the expected result in one sentence and the exact result in another. For example: “I expected the public pricing page; at 14:32 UTC I received Error 1020.”
- Ask for an approved route, such as a corrected allow-list entry, a supported account permission or a human-assisted process. Do not ask support to bypass a control without verifying your authorization.
Remove unrelated personal data before sharing. Do not publish session cookies, authorization headers, passwords or private account information in a screenshot or support ticket.
When an automated screenshot is appropriate
A hosted screenshot service can help with authorized monitoring, QA, documentation and repeatable captures. It renders whatever its browser session can legitimately reach. If the result is a CAPTCHA, 403, login page or blank image, that denial may be the actual response to automation—not a failure that more waiting will fix.

Cookies prove an existing session; they do not grant permission or defeat a firewall, CAPTCHA or other control.

Browserless identifies blank or white screenshots, CAPTCHA screens, access-denied/403 pages and missing elements as signs that a site may be blocking automation: Browserless Screenshot API documentation. Use a legitimate session
For a page you are authorized to automate, provide the service with valid, short-lived session cookies through its documented secure mechanism. Confirm that the account, terms and site owner permit automated access. Never copy cookies from another person or use them to reach content you are not allowed to view.
Wait for rendering, not for permission
Waiting for a selector, a short delay or network idle can help JavaScript finish. It cannot turn a login screen into an authenticated page or remove a bot challenge. Set a bounded timeout, inspect the returned status or verdict, and preserve the denial response when it is what the service received.

The normal browser works, but the API receives a CAPTCHA
That difference is a block signal. Verify that automation is authorized, inspect the service’s verdict headers or logs, and ask the site owner for an approved allow-list or human handoff. Increasing the delay is not a CAPTCHA solution.
The API returns a login page
Supply valid session cookies only through the documented, authorized mechanism, or sign in through a human-controlled flow. Check cookie domain, path and expiration. If you do not have permission, stop and request access from the owner.

The image is blank or missing content
Check the returned verdict, wait for a known selector or network idle, and confirm that the page does not require blocked third-party resources. Compare with a normal browser. A persistent blank result can itself be the evidence of automation blocking.

Cloudflare 1020 continues after a reload
Record the Ray ID and timestamp and contact the website owner. Do not present repeated retries as a fix; only the owner can review the firewall event and provide an approved route.
A CAPTCHA widget is broken for a person
Update the browser, enable JavaScript and disable extensions that conflict with the widget. If it still fails, send the screenshot and details to the site webmaster, following Google’s reCAPTCHA help guidance.
A service-specific 403 has its own instructions
Follow that service’s documented advice. For example, Netflix says its BLOCKED or HTTP 403 message may be temporary, recommends closing Netflix browser tabs and windows and trying again, then contacting support if it persists: Netflix Help. This advice is specific to Netflix, not a universal remedy.

- Uncropped screenshot with the denial text and identifiers visible.
- Original file plus a recorded URL, date, time zone and browser.
- Ray ID, request ID or incident code, if shown.
- Network, VPN and account context that is safe to disclose.
- A concise expected-versus-actual description.
- No passwords, tokens, session cookies or unnecessary personal information.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot prove that a website is down?
No. It proves what your browser or capture service displayed at a particular time. The owner must correlate it with server, firewall and availability logs.
Should I crop the browser address bar?
Keep the address visible when it helps identify the page, but remove unrelated private data in a separate copy. Always retain an untouched original.
Can I use a screenshot API to bypass Cloudflare or a CAPTCHA?
No. Use only an authorized session or an owner-approved route. A challenge or denial returned by the API should be documented and reported, not circumvented.
