To capture screenshots of pages listed in a sitemap, use the sitemap to build a reviewed URL queue, then have an AI agent use Playwright to open each page and save a screenshot. Decide whether you want the visible viewport or the full scrollable page, give each file a predictable name, and track results so failed pages can be retried. A sitemap supplies URLs; it does not take screenshots.
How the workflow fits together
A sitemap is a file that describes pages and other site resources. Google Search Central defines it as “a file where you provide information about the pages, videos, and other files on your site, and the relationships between them.” It is an input to your capture job, not a screenshot tool. - Find the sitemap and determine whether it lists page URLs directly or points to additional sitemap files.
- Choose which URLs belong in the capture and normalize or deduplicate them.
- Ask the agent to use a browser to visit each URL, wait for an appropriate page-ready condition, and capture the desired image.
- Save each result under a deterministic filename and record successes and failures in a manifest.
- Review a small sample before running a large queue; retry failed URLs separately.
Playwright provides navigation and screenshot capabilities, but its documentation does not prescribe a universal sitemap parser, readiness rule, or end-to-end agent workflow. You must adapt those parts to the site and verify the outputs. Playwright Page API

Locate and inspect the sitemap
Start with the sitemap URL published by the site, if known. Check whether it contains the page URLs you want or points to more sitemap files, and build the final queue from the relevant entries. The cited Google guidance establishes sitemap purpose and preferred-URL selection, but does not provide a complete sitemap-index parsing specification here; confirm the format you encounter rather than assuming every sitemap has the same structure.

Set scope and handle duplicate URLs
Decide whether the archive should include query-string variants, locale variants, redirected URLs, or only the preferred version of each page. When multiple URLs expose the same content, Google’s sitemap-building guidance recommends choosing the preferred URL rather than listing every duplicate. Before the agent starts, ask it to show the proposed queue and a few example output filenames. This catches accidental inclusion of non-page resources or duplicate content before they create a large, confusing archive.

Choose what each screenshot should show

Give the agent a bounded task
For an AI agent connected to Playwright, specify the inputs, capture mode, naming rules, readiness approach, and reporting format. For example:

Read the sitemap URL I provide. Identify the page URLs in scope, deduplicate the queue, and show me the queue plus five example filenames before capturing. For each approved URL, use Playwright to navigate to the page, wait for the site-appropriate readiness condition, and save a full-page screenshot as PNG. Use a deterministic filename that includes a sanitized path and a short URL hash. Record the requested URL, final URL if available, filename, capture mode, timestamp, and success or failure in a manifest. Do not claim a capture succeeded unless the output file exists; report failed URLs separately for retry.
Change “full-page” and “PNG” to match the deliverable. For interaction, Playwright recommends using browser snapshots to find actionable page structure and screenshots to assess appearance. Name files and track outcomes
Use a stable naming scheme so reruns do not overwrite unrelated pages. A sanitized URL path paired with an index or short URL hash is one practical option; path-only names can collide when query variants or similar paths exist. Keep a manifest with one record per requested URL, including:

- Output filename and capture mode.
- Capture timestamp.
- Success or failure, with an error summary for failures.
This manifest is a useful audit pattern, not a format mandated by Playwright. It lets you identify missing outputs and retry only the pages that failed.

Run safely and verify the archive
Do not launch an unreviewed, unbounded batch. Keep parallelism within what the target site and your capture host can handle, and follow the access requirements that apply to the site. The cited documentation does not establish a universal concurrency setting or legal rule, so choose limits for your environment and target.
- Test a few representative pages before processing the full queue, including pages that may load differently.
- Choose a readiness condition suited to the site; one fixed wait rule will not fit every page.
- After the run, check that expected files exist and that the manifest accounts for each requested URL.
- Inspect screenshots for blank or incomplete pages before treating the archive as finished.
