Use an MCP-connected browser to navigate to each page URL listed in the sitemap, then save a viewport, element, or full-page screenshot. First check whether the sitemap is an index: if it is, follow its child sitemap locations and collect the page URLs from those files. The workflow is the same for an Indian website as for any other site; no India-specific sitemap format is established here.
What you need before capturing pages
- The site’s sitemap URL, found on the site or in its
robots.txtfile. Do not assume the address is/sitemap.xml. - An MCP client connected to a browser tool that can navigate to URLs and take screenshots. The Playwright MCP documentation describes
browser_navigateandbrowser_take_screenshot. - A decision about screenshot scope: the visible viewport, a specific element, or the whole scrollable page.
- A destination and naming convention for the output files, plus a record connecting each screenshot to its original URL.
Playwright’s screenshot documentation says it can “Capture the viewport, a specific element, or the full scrollable page.” The Playwright documentation describes capabilities, not a test of a particular Indian website.
Find and parse the sitemap
Locate the sitemap file
Check the website’s published sitemap location or look for a Sitemap: declaration in its robots.txt. Google Search Central says sitemap URLs should be fully qualified absolute URLs, and a sitemap may be declared in robots.txt: Google’s sitemap guidance. A sitemap is not guaranteed to be at a universal path.
Tell a sitemap index from a URL set
Inspect the XML root element. A urlset contains page entries; an index uses a sitemapindex root with child sitemap entries and their loc values. For an index, fetch each child sitemap and extract its page URLs. Google Search Central documents the structure and a limit of 50,000 loc entries in a sitemap index (documentation last updated in 2025): Google’s sitemap-index guidance.

Choose the pages to capture
Use the absolute URLs listed in the sitemap. A sitemap expresses preferred URLs; it is a source of candidates, not proof that a URL is currently reachable or that a browser can load it. If the file contains more pages than you need, select the relevant URLs before starting browser capture.
Capture each page with Playwright MCP
- Connect your MCP client to a Playwright MCP server using that client’s configured setup. The available configuration depends on the client; no particular client or setup command is specified here.
- Call
browser_navigatewith one absolute page URL from the sitemap. - If you need to inspect the page or identify a target, take an accessibility snapshot after navigation. The structured snapshot helps inspect page content and controls; use a screenshot to verify visual appearance. See the Playwright MCP documentation.
- Call
browser_take_screenshotwith the scope and output location you want. Use a distinct filename for each page and keep a URL-to-filename record. - Repeat for the remaining selected URLs. Record navigation or capture failures rather than treating missing screenshots as successful captures.
Choose the screenshot scope

Playwright MCP supports PNG, JPEG, or WebP screenshots. When the type is omitted, the filename can determine the format. Consult the Playwright MCP screenshot documentation for the options available in your installed version.

What a sitemap does—and does not—tell you
Google describes sitemap submission as a hint; it does not guarantee Google will fetch a sitemap or crawl its URLs. That is separate from whether a browser automation tool can navigate to a public URL. Google also notes that a URL blocked in robots.txt may still be indexed if linked elsewhere. Robots rules are about crawler access and should not be mistaken for a definitive test of MCP browser access. See Google’s sitemap overview and Google’s robots.txt guide.
Troubleshooting
- The assumed sitemap URL returns an error: look for the sitemap declaration in
robots.txtor the site’s published sitemap location instead of assuming/sitemap.xml. - The sitemap contains other sitemap URLs, not page URLs: it is an index. Fetch its child
locentries and extract page URLs from each child sitemap. - A browser cannot navigate to a listed URL: record the failed URL and inspect the browser’s navigation result. A sitemap listing does not guarantee that the page is reachable or that automated navigation succeeds.
- The screenshot omits below-the-fold content: use full-page capture. Do not combine full-page mode with an element target.
- You cannot identify the right element: take a fresh accessibility snapshot after navigation, inspect the page structure, then select the target for an element screenshot.
- The file has the wrong format or extension: explicitly choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP as supported, or use a matching filename extension when relying on filename-based format selection.
- A URL is blocked in
robots.txt: do not infer from Google’s crawler rules alone whether an MCP browser can access it. Test the browser navigation and report its actual result.
Practical reliability and cost considerations
For repeatable captures, retain the original URL alongside each output filename, use a consistent naming scheme, and keep failures in the record rather than silently skipping them. For large indexes, account for the documented 50,000-entry limit per sitemap index and process the child sitemap files. The cited documentation does not establish a universal rate limit, processing speed, or capture-success rate for this workflow; those depend on the site, browser setup, and MCP client.

The available sources establish no India-specific sitemap format or special capture requirement. Use the site’s actual sitemap and follow its structure.
Does a URL in a sitemap guarantee that its screenshot will work?
