Use an AI agent with Playwright to capture the visible screen, a specific page element, or the full scrollable page. For a reliable record, save the exact URL, UTC capture time, browser and viewport settings, and capture scope alongside the image. Capture only pages you are authorized to view, and check the institution’s terms and content rights before sharing the screenshot.
Choose what the screenshot should show

Playwright documents all three capture modes. Its full-page option captures the scrollable page and cannot be combined with a target element. For a very long page, separate viewport captures of relevant sections may be easier to read than one tall image; that is a practical choice, not a guarantee about the result.
Capture a page with Playwright and Python
The example below opens a public page and saves a full-page PNG. Install Playwright and its Chromium browser first. Replace the example URL with the exact page you are authorized to capture.

- Install the Python package:

browser.close()The script prints a small capture record to the terminal; retain it with the image if you need to reproduce or explain the capture. A successful navigation response does not establish permission to republish the page’s content.

Capture only the visible viewport
Remove full_page=True from the screenshot call. The resulting image covers the configured viewport rather than the whole document.
Capture one element
Use a locator for the section you want, then screenshot that locator:

Let the agent inspect structure, then verify the image
A screenshot shows rendered appearance; it is not the best way to discover page structure. Use the browser’s DOM or accessibility information to locate content and interact with the page, then capture and inspect the rendered result. Playwright MCP documentation describes screenshots as visual inspection aids and points to browser snapshots for working with page structure.
- Check that the correct page loaded, rather than a redirect, error page, or access challenge.
- Inspect the saved image at normal viewing size for clipped text, missing images, overlays, and unreadable page length.
- For lengthy content, capture relevant sections separately if a single full-page image is difficult to review.
- Record the URL, UTC timestamp, browser and viewport configuration, capture scope, and filename.
- Avoid retaining unrelated personal information visible on the page.

Respect access, privacy, and reuse boundaries
Capture only a public page you are authorized to view. Do not direct an agent to bypass a login, access control, CAPTCHA, or other restriction. A screenshot and permission to redistribute its contents are separate questions: check the institution’s terms, privacy notice, and relevant rights before publication.
GIGW 3.0 offers guidance for Indian government websites and applications, with aims including usability, user-centricity, accessibility, and security. It is context for government-run institutions or portals, not automatically a compliance standard for every privately operated school or college. The National Government Services Portal’s own policy illustrates why permissions must be checked per site: it sets conditions for reuse of its featured material, excludes third-party copyrighted material from that permission, and separately allows direct links to its portal without prior permission. Those terms do not establish reuse rights for other institutions’ websites.
If a capture or later processing includes personal data, consider what data is present, why it is being handled, and who will receive it. The Press Information Bureau stated that the Government of India notified the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules, 2025 on 14 November 2025, giving effect to the DPDP Act, 2023. That statement alone does not determine whether a particular capture or use is compliant or prohibited.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The browser does not open
Confirm that Playwright’s Chromium installation completed for the Python environment you are using. Run python -m playwright install chromium again with that same interpreter.

Check that the URL is correct and inspect the page after navigation to see whether it redirected, failed, or requires access you do not have. A page’s content may render after the initial load; use an appropriate wait for the content you need, but do not try to evade restrictions. Inspect the resulting image before treating it as a complete record.
The element screenshot fails
Check that the selector identifies the intended element and that it exists after the page has rendered. Use page structure or accessibility information to find a more specific selector. Capture the element alone rather than attempting to combine it with full-page capture.

The full-page image is hard to read
Use separate viewport captures for the relevant sections, with each image saved under a descriptive filename. A single tall image is not always the most usable record.
