To capture a paywall notice you can already see, open the news page normally and use Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool: choose Save visible for what is on screen or Save full page for the full page as currently accessible. This records the notice; it does not unlock the article or grant permission to reproduce it.
Capture the notice in Firefox
- Open the news page in Firefox as you normally would. Do not try to bypass a subscription, login control, or other site restriction.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot. You can also use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose Save visible to capture the current viewport, including the notice if it is on screen. Choose Save full page to capture the full page that is accessible to you.
- Save the image file, or use Firefox’s option to copy the screenshot to the clipboard.
Firefox’s documented capture options are described in Mozilla Support’s “Take screenshots in Firefox,” updated June 15, 2026.
Choose the right kind of record
- Visible screenshot: best when you need to show the notice as it appeared in the current viewport.
- Full-page screenshot: includes the full page currently accessible to your browser; it does not make inaccessible paywalled content available.
- Saved page: if you use Chrome and want a local copy of the accessible page rather than an image, Chrome Help documents More > More tools > Save page as. This saves the page as available to you; it is not an unlocking method. See Chrome Help: Download a file.
Preserve enough context to identify the notice
Keep the original screenshot unaltered. If the image does not show them, record the page URL and capture date separately. Include the publisher identity and enough surrounding page or browser context to make clear what the notice referred to. These are practical record-keeping suggestions, not a formal evidentiary standard; a screenshot alone may not establish when or how the page appeared, and the page may change later.
If screenshot capture is blocked
Stop rather than trying to defeat the restriction. You can document the notice by noting its text, URL, date, and device if that is allowed. In some managed environments, screenshot prevention can be imposed through Chrome Enterprise policies, including restrictions on screenshot shortcuts and apps or extensions that use Chrome’s capture API. See Google Chrome Enterprise and Education Help: Set Chrome policies for users or browsers. If the device is managed, ask its administrator about the restriction.

Does a screenshot let you share or republish the notice?
No. Capturing what is displayed does not change the publisher’s rights or the site’s terms. The Indian Express terms, for example, describe limits on copying, archiving, printing, downloading, storing, or otherwise using content in specified circumstances, and prohibit attempts to circumvent the site. They distinguish personal use from other uses and set written-approval conditions for certain printouts or downloads. Those are that publisher’s terms, not a universal rule for Indian news sites. Check the current terms of the publisher whose page you captured, and seek permission if your planned use requires it: The Indian Express Terms and Conditions.
The Government of India Copyright Office handbook says, “There is no copyright over news. However, there is copyright over the way in which a news item is reported.” It also describes fair dealing for research, study, criticism, review, and news reporting subject to conditions. That general explanation does not decide whether reproducing a particular screenshot is permitted: it may include protected article wording, photographs, page design, or other expression, and the purpose and extent of reuse matter. See the Copyright Office’s Hand Book of Copyright Law. The Copyright Office also says it cannot authorize use of copyrighted material on linked websites and advises users to ask the owner: Copyright Office Terms & Condition. For another outlet’s page, check with that publisher or the relevant rights holder rather than relying on a different site’s terms.

If you need a screenshot through an API, ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one GET request and returns a screenshot or PDF. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, with the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. Use it only for pages you are authorized to access; it does not make paywalled article content available.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://indianexpress.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and setup. ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
