Loki captures and compares Storybook stories; its documented workflow does not show how to enter an arbitrary live Indian government website URL and capture it. Use Loki when you have a Storybook implementation of the page you own or are authorized to test. For a live public page, use an authorized browser-capture method instead. A screenshot can document appearance, but it is not an accessibility audit.
What Loki can capture—and what it cannot
Loki is a visual-regression testing tool integrated with Storybook. It captures tested stories, compares the resulting images with reference screenshots, and lets you review visual differences. Its documented workflow is for Storybook stories, not arbitrary live URLs. See the Loki getting-started guide and Loki command-line options.
That distinction matters for Indian government sites: if you are testing a Storybook version of a service page, Loki may fit the task. If you need an image of the live page at a public government URL, the documented Loki steps do not establish that capability. Do not treat a Storybook capture as proof of what the live site currently displays.
Set up Loki for a Storybook implementation

Check the project’s Storybook and Node versions, then confirm Loki’s current compatibility and installation instructions against those versions. The Loki guide describes Node 16 or later and installation as a development dependency; the documentation is version-sensitive.

Add Loki to the project as a development dependency and initialize its configuration using the official getting-started guide.

Start the configured Storybook and run Loki’s test command. Loki captures the stories under test, compares them to references, and writes current screenshots and image differences to its configured locations.

Inspect the current screenshots and differences. If a change is expected and correct, use Loki’s update and approval workflow to update the reference images deliberately. An approved reference records an accepted baseline; it does not prove the page is correct.

.loki/current— screenshots from the latest run..loki/difference— images showing differences from the references..loki/reference— the approved baseline images.
These paths can be configured. The test command generates and compares captures; the update command refreshes reference images; the documented approve command updates references from images generated in the last run. Review changes before approving them, and keep generated output distinct from the baseline. See the CLI documentation for the command behavior applicable to your installed version.
Make captures repeatable
Visual comparisons are useful only when the underlying page state is sufficiently consistent. Keep the Storybook story, browser target, viewport or configuration, and page content stable between runs. A changed viewport or story state can produce a difference even when the implementation itself has not regressed.
Load timing
Loki exposes a configurable Chrome load timeout. If the page or assets do not finish loading within the configured interval, the capture may be incomplete or the run may fail. Set an appropriate timeout for your test environment and investigate slow or unstable story loading rather than approving a partial screenshot as the new baseline. Consult the CLI options and configuration documentation.

Loki’s chromeSelector setting selects capture dimensions by cropping to the selected region. It does not isolate the selected element from absolutely positioned content that overlaps that region. If an overlay or positioned element appears in the image, check the story layout and selector crop before assuming Loki captured only the selected component. The behavior is described in Loki’s configuration documentation.

When the target is a live Indian government website
For a live page rather than a Storybook implementation, use a browser-based capture approach that is authorized for the site and suitable for the page. The cited Loki materials do not document a workflow for supplying an arbitrary URL, so avoid presenting Loki as a direct live-URL screenshot tool.
Do not bypass CAPTCHA, authentication, or other access controls to obtain a screenshot. GIGW accessibility guidance addresses text alternatives for non-text content, including CAPTCHA, and says alternative CAPTCHA forms should accommodate different sensory perceptions. A screenshot records a visual state; it does not demonstrate that the content is usable with assistive technology. Where documentation needs to convey page content, retain an accessible text or document version where appropriate.
GIGW applies to government websites and applications at central, state, district, and local levels, with stated aims including usability, user-centricity, and universal accessibility. See the GIGW guidance. For documentation, identify the service or page, include the public URL when appropriate, record the capture date and language, and note the relevant viewport or Storybook configuration. This is practical documentation advice, not a GIGW-mandated checklist. Exclude personal information, authentication material, and citizen records from published images.
Troubleshooting Loki captures

You need an image of a public URL, but Loki expects stories. The documented Loki workflow is Storybook-based. Use an authorized browser-capture method for the live site rather than assuming Loki accepts arbitrary URLs.

The run fails or the screenshot is incomplete. Check that Storybook is running and the story loads, then review the Chrome load timeout and environment stability in the CLI options.

Unexpected image differences appear. Compare story state, viewport, browser target, content, and timing with the prior run. Review the current and difference images before considering a reference update.

The capture includes content outside the selected component. A

You are unsure whether to approve updated references. Treat approval as a deliberate baseline change, not as a validation result. Confirm the change is intentional and correct before updating references.
