Capture each locale-specific landing page from its explicit URL, using the same browser dimensions, scale, and capture scope for every version. A screenshot records what a page looks like; it does not prove that hreflang annotations correctly connect the pages. Check the URL set and annotations separately.
1. Build a list of the locale URLs
Start with the exact landing-page URL for each intended language or language-region version. Record the audience each URL targets, such as French-language visitors or visitors in a particular region. Google recommends distinct URLs for language versions and hreflang annotations to associate them. Google’s international-site guidance also cautions against relying on automatic adaptation alone: Googlebot generally does not vary its location or send an Accept-Language header to discover locale-specific content.
Capture the explicit URLs directly rather than assuming that a cookie, browser preference, or redirect will expose every variant. If a page requires a language-selection step, authentication, or a particular consent state, note that in your capture manifest.
2. Choose what each screenshot needs to show
Use the same capture scope for each locale so the images are meaningfully comparable:

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Viewport: captures the visible screen and is useful when comparing the first impression, header, or above-the-fold content.
- Full page: captures the scrollable page when lower sections, footer content, or locale-specific details matter.
- Selected element: captures a particular component, such as a language switcher or localized pricing block.
Playwright documents these screenshot modes and scale choices in its screenshot documentation. Choose CSS-pixel or device-pixel scaling deliberately and keep that choice consistent across the set.

For a repeatable workflow, use one browser setup and iterate over the locale URLs. This Node.js example captures a full-page PNG at a fixed viewport, saves a manifest with the locale and URL, and gives each file a descriptive name.

- Install Playwright: run
npm init -y, thennpm install -D playwrightandnpx playwright install chromium. - Save this as
capture-locales.mjs:import { chromium } from 'playwright'; import { writeFile } from 'node:fs/promises'; const pages = [ { locale: 'en-US', url: 'https://example.com/en-us/' }, { locale: 'fr-FR', url: 'https://example.com/fr-fr/' }, { locale: 'de-DE', url: 'https://example.com/de-de/' }, ]; const browser = await chromium.launch(); const context = await browser.newContext({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 }, deviceScaleFactor: 1, }); const manifest = []; try { for (const pageInfo of pages) { const page = await context.newPage(); const response = await page.goto(pageInfo.url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 60000, }); if (!response || !response.ok()) { throw new Error(`Could not load ${pageInfo.url}; status: ${response?.status() ?? 'no response'}`); } const filename = `screenshots/${pageInfo.locale}.png`; await page.screenshot({ path: filename, fullPage: true, animations: 'disabled' }); manifest.push({ locale: pageInfo.locale, url: pageInfo.url, status: response.status(), filename, viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 }, deviceScaleFactor: 1, capture: 'full page', }); await page.close(); } } finally { await browser.close(); } await writeFile('screenshots/manifest.json', JSON.stringify(manifest, null, 2)); - Create the output folder and run it: create a
screenshotsdirectory, then runnode capture-locales.mjs. Replace the example URLs with the real locale URLs before running.
The fixed viewport and device scale factor make the capture conditions consistent. If you need a viewport-only image instead, change fullPage: true to fullPage: false. To capture one element, use a locator and its screenshot method, for example await page.locator('.language-switcher').screenshot({ path: 'screenshots/en-US-switcher.png' }). Adapt the selector to the page.
networkidle can be unsuitable on pages that keep network connections open or continuously fetch content. In that case, wait for a meaningful selector or use an explicit delay appropriate to the page before capturing. If a site’s consent flow changes what is visible, decide whether to capture before or after consent and apply the same state consistently; record that choice in the manifest.

4. Compare the locale pages without confusing appearance with SEO validity
Review the images side by side using a checklist tied to the intended audience and URL:
- Does the visible language match the locale the URL is meant to serve? Google determines a page’s language from visible content, not from its
hreflangannotation or HTMLlangattribute. Google’s multilingual-site guidance explains the distinction. - Are navigation, currency, regional details, and prominent calls to action appropriate for the intended audience?
- Is the language switcher visible and does it lead to the intended alternate URLs?
- Were all pages captured with the same viewport, scale, capture scope, and relevant page state?
Then validate the hreflang implementation independently. Google supports HTML annotations, HTTP headers, or sitemaps; each version should identify itself and the other versions, and annotations need reciprocal return links. Check that the language and region values are valid and that any x-default URL is the intended fallback, often a language-selector page. A screenshot cannot establish any of these annotation properties. See Google’s localized-versions documentation.

5. Capture Google’s rendered view when you need it
To inspect Google’s rendering rather than a normal browser’s, use Search Console URL Inspection for the page and run a live test. After a successful test, view the rendered screenshot. Google says this screenshot is not available for the indexed-URL view or when the fetch is unsuccessful. Treat it as a record of what the inspection tool rendered, not as a replacement for your browser capture. A difference can result from resources blocked to Google’s inspection tool. Google’s steps and availability conditions are described in URL Inspection documentation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Label these files distinctly—for example, include browser or google-live-test in the filename—so reviewers do not mistake one renderer’s output for the other’s.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one GET request and return an image or PDF. The following cURL example requests a WebP screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the available parameters.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/fr-fr/ -o fr-FR.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. See ScreenshotNeo for plan details. Common capture problems
- A locale URL redirects to another language: open the exact intended URL directly and check for redirect logic based on cookies, IP, or browser language. Record any required state; do not treat a screenshot of the redirected page as evidence for the requested URL.
- The capture times out at network idle: some pages never become idle. Wait for a stable, page-specific selector or use a considered fixed delay, then retain the same rule across locales.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: confirm the page loaded successfully, wait for the relevant content to appear, and check whether required resources are blocked or whether the page needs consent or authentication.
- Images or lower content are missing: confirm that the chosen mode is full-page and allow lazy-loaded content to render before capture. If the page loads sections only after scrolling, use a workflow that scrolls through the page before taking the full-page capture.
- Two images do not align visually: verify viewport dimensions, device scale factor, capture scope, and page state in the manifest before interpreting the difference as a localization issue.
- Search Console shows no screenshot: confirm that you ran a live test and that it completed successfully; the indexed-URL view does not provide this screenshot.
- The screenshot looks correct but hreflang is wrong: inspect the annotations, alternate URL set, and reciprocal links directly. Visual appearance does not validate the markup or sitemap entries.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I capture every hreflang URL or just the canonical page?
Capture each intended locale URL when you need a visual record of the full variant set; a single page cannot document the appearance of the others.
Does an HTML lang attribute tell Google which hreflang version a page is?
No. Google uses visible content to determine page language; hreflang annotations associate localized URL variants.
