On a Mac, open Safari’s Develop menu, choose Enter Responsive Design Mode (or press Control-Command-R), set the viewport and pixel ratio, then use Shift-Command-5 to capture the whole screen, Safari window, or a selected area. If you need only webpage pixels, Safari 18.4 and later document console.screenshot() in Web Inspector for a precise rectangle.
Choose what the screenshot should contain
There are two different jobs people call a “responsive-mode screenshot.” Decide the scope before pressing a shortcut:
- Safari view: includes the Responsive Design Mode frame and possibly Safari chrome. Use this for bug reports, tutorials, or evidence of the selected device settings.
- Webpage content: excludes browser controls and captures a defined page rectangle or element. Use this for design comparisons, documentation, and image assets.
Record the viewport width, height, orientation, pixel ratio, URL, and scope with every image. Without those details, two captures that look different cannot be compared reliably.
Enter Responsive Design Mode
Enable Safari’s developer features
- Open Safari and load the page you want to inspect.
- If Develop is absent from the menu bar, open Safari’s settings and enable the developer menu (Safari’s current settings place this control in the advanced settings).
- Choose Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode. Apple documents Control-Command-R (⌃⌘R) as the keyboard shortcut. See Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation.
Set the viewport
Select a device preset or enter a custom width and height. The displayed dimensions are screen points, not necessarily the final number of physical pixels in the saved image. Rotate the preview when you need portrait and landscape variants; rotation swaps the viewport dimensions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a pixel ratio deliberately. It can change CSS pixel-ratio media queries and which resources are selected by srcset or CSS image-set(). A layout test should keep the ratio constant while changing width; an image-sharpness test should compare the ratios you actually support.
Capture the Safari window or preview
- Click the page or Responsive Design Mode preview so Safari is the active application.
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open macOS Screenshot. Apple describes the available modes in Take screenshots or screen recordings on Mac.
- Choose one of the capture modes: entire screen, selected window, or selected portion.
- For a window capture, select Safari. For a clean preview-only image, choose selected portion and drag around the preview rather than the browser chrome.
- Open Options to choose the save location and, when needed, a timer. Confirm the selection and save the file.
A window or screen capture preserves the visual context but also captures interface pixels. A selected-area capture gives you control over the boundary, yet its dimensions depend on your drag and can vary by a few pixels between attempts.
Capture an exact webpage rectangle with Web Inspector
WebKit’s Safari 18.4 feature article documents a Console API that accepts a DOMRect. This is the most precise built-in method for page content, but do not assume it exists in older Safari releases.
Capture an element
- Enter Responsive Design Mode and set the desired viewport.
- Open Web Inspector (use Safari’s Develop menu and select the inspector for the current page), then open the Console tab.
- Run this command, replacing the selector with the element you want:
console.screenshot(document.querySelector("#testNode").getBoundingClientRect())
getBoundingClientRect() returns the element’s position and size in viewport coordinates. The result therefore follows the element’s current layout, including responsive styles at the selected width.
Capture a fixed rectangle
To capture a known rectangle, pass a DOMRect directly. WebKit gives this 800-by-600 example:

console.screenshot(new DOMRect(0, 0, 800, 600))
The coordinates are CSS pixels relative to the page viewport. If a selector returns null, the command cannot call getBoundingClientRect(); verify the selector and run it after the page has rendered. The API is documented in WebKit Features in Safari 18.4.
When the Console method is unavailable
Use Shift-Command-5 and a selected area, or update to a Safari release that documents the API. Do not label a manually cropped window capture as an exact DOM rectangle: browser chrome, scaling, and selection boundaries make it a different artifact.
Make responsive screenshots reproducible
Use a capture record
- Page URL and whether the page was authenticated.
- Viewport width and height in points.
- Orientation and pixel ratio.
- Capture scope: entire screen, Safari window, selected area, element rectangle, or fixed rectangle.
- Safari and macOS versions, plus the capture date.
Save this information beside the image filename or in your issue tracker. For example, a filename such as checkout-390x844@3x-element-2026-09-29.png communicates the viewport, ratio, scope, and date without opening the file.

- Wait for fonts, images, and client-rendered content to finish loading.
- Scroll to the intended position before taking a screen or selected-area capture.
- Close transient menus, autofill popovers, and inspector overlays unless they are the subject of the screenshot.
- Use the same orientation and pixel ratio for before-and-after comparisons.
Test breakpoints and density separately
For a breakpoint review, hold pixel ratio constant and compare the widths around each CSS breakpoint. For an asset or high-density review, hold the viewport dimensions constant and compare pixel-ratio settings. Because density can affect srcset, image-set(), and media queries, changing both variables at once hides the cause of a difference.
Know what Responsive Design Mode does not prove
Apple describes the presets as approximations rather than exact reproductions of physical devices. macOS Safari does not reproduce every detail of mobile rendering or behavior: browser address bars, the on-screen keyboard, and device-specific form controls can change the available space and interaction model. WebKit’s Simplified Responsive Design Mode explains the model and its device-size approximations.

Use Responsive Design Mode for layout and visual checks. When the question concerns iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS rendering or input behavior, use Safari’s Open with Simulator workflow or test on the physical device. Treat the screenshot as evidence of the macOS preview, not proof that every device will behave identically.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
Develop is missing
Enable Safari’s developer menu in Safari settings, then reopen the menu bar. If a managed Mac hides the setting, an administrator may control it.

Make Safari the active application and ensure a page tab, not a dialog or another application, has focus. Use Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode to verify that the command is available.
The preview has the wrong layout
Check width, height, orientation, and pixel ratio. A rotated preview swaps dimensions, and density-dependent CSS or image selection can change at the same width. Reload after changing settings if the page has state that is created only during initial load.
The screenshot includes browser controls
You used an entire-screen or window capture. Repeat with selected portion, or use console.screenshot() for a DOM rectangle in Safari 18.4 or later.

document.querySelector() returned no element, usually because the selector is wrong or the element has not rendered. Confirm the selector in the Elements panel, wait for the page to finish rendering, and run the command again.
The image is clipped or contains a blank region
For screen captures, enlarge the selected region to include the full preview and wait for lazy content. For a DOM rectangle, verify that the rectangle lies inside the viewport and that the target element has non-zero dimensions.
The result differs from an iPhone or iPad
This is an expected limitation of approximation. Recheck in Simulator or on the target device when browser chrome, keyboard behavior, touch input, or platform-specific controls matter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture only the responsive preview without Safari’s toolbar?
Yes. Use Shift-Command-5 and choose Selected Portion, or use Safari 18.4’s documented console.screenshot() with a DOMRect for page pixels.
Recommended Free Tools
Are Responsive Design Mode dimensions physical pixels?
The displayed viewport size is in screen points. Pixel ratio affects the rendered resources and styles, so record both dimensions and ratio with the screenshot.
Does Responsive Design Mode replace testing on an iPhone or iPad?
No. It approximates device sizes and does not reproduce every platform-specific rendering or input behavior; use Simulator or the physical device for those checks.
What should I record when sharing a responsive screenshot?
Include the URL, viewport width and height, orientation, pixel ratio, capture scope, Safari/macOS versions, and capture date.
