To capture a virtual machine’s screen, choose a method that matches what you need: a guest-display image, a screenshot handled by the guest operating system, or a picture of the VM window and host desktop. VirtualBox documents a command that saves the guest display as a PNG; Hyper-V VMConnect documents a screen-capture shortcut; and VMware Fusion documents sending Print Screen to a Windows guest. These steps are specific to the documented products and may vary by version.
Choose what you need to capture
A screenshot is an image of what is displayed. A VM checkpoint or snapshot is different: it records machine state so you can return to it or use it for troubleshooting. If you need an image to share or include in documentation, do not create a checkpoint instead.
- Guest display only: Use a hypervisor function that captures the guest’s displayed content directly, such as VirtualBox’s
VBoxManagecommand. - Guest operating system’s screenshot: Send or forward a screenshot key to the guest, then save or paste the resulting image inside the guest.
- VM window, host menus, or surrounding desktop: Use the host operating system’s screenshot tool. The result may include whatever host UI is visible around the VM.
- Earlier machine state: Use the hypervisor’s checkpoint or snapshot feature, not a screenshot command.
The exact workflow depends on the hypervisor, host OS, guest OS, and whether the VM uses one display or multiple displays. The steps below cover the procedures documented for VirtualBox, Hyper-V VMConnect, and VMware Fusion; they are not universal shortcuts for every virtualization product.
Capture a VirtualBox guest display as a PNG
On the host running VirtualBox, use VBoxManage with the VM name and the destination filename:

VBoxManage controlvm "VM name" screenshotpng "/path/to/screenshot.png"Replace VM name with the name VirtualBox uses for the VM and choose a destination path that the host can write to. Oracle describes this command as taking a screenshot of the guest display and saving it as a PNG file. It captures the guest display rather than the host desktop surrounding the VM window. See the VirtualBox command documentation for the installed release’s syntax.
For a multi-display guest
Oracle’s command documentation includes a display selector. For a single-monitor guest, the display number is 0. If the VM has multiple displays, consult the syntax for your installed VirtualBox release and select the display you want. Do not assume that one command produces a combined image of every guest monitor.
Guest Additions are not a prerequisite for this command
VirtualBox Guest Additions provide display-integration features, including extra or non-standard video modes and VM-window resizing for Windows, Linux, and Solaris guests. Those features can affect how the guest display behaves, but Oracle documents the VBoxManage screenshot command separately; the command should not be presented as requiring Guest Additions. Capture a screen in Hyper-V VMConnect
Microsoft’s VMConnect shortcut list documents CTRL+C as a screen-capture action. Make sure keyboard focus is in the VMConnect session before using it, so the shortcut is handled by the intended window. Refer to Microsoft’s VMConnect keyboard-shortcut list for the applicable product documentation.

A checkpoint records VM state for troubleshooting or later return; it is not the screen-capture action.
If the shortcut does not work
- Click inside the VMConnect window and try again, in case keyboard focus was elsewhere.
- Check the shortcut list for the host and VMConnect version in use. The documented shortcut should not be assumed to apply unchanged to every version or VM connection mode.
- If you need the host-visible VM window rather than the guest’s screen-capture action, use the host OS’s screenshot tool instead.
Send Print Screen to a Windows guest in VMware Fusion
Broadcom documents this menu path in VMware Fusion: Virtual Machine > Send Key > Print Scrn. For a Windows guest, the action behaves like the guest’s regular screen-print operation and places the image on the Windows clipboard. Switch to an image-capable application inside the guest, such as Paint or Word, and paste the image there. Then save it from that application if you need a file.

This route asks the guest OS to handle the key; it is not the same as saving a PNG directly from the host. Menu labels and behavior can vary by Fusion version, so check Broadcom’s VMware Fusion screenshot instructions against the version installed on your Mac.
Capture the Mac host screen instead
To capture the whole Mac screen, Broadcom describes pressing Command+Shift+3; the image is saved to the Mac desktop. This is a host-level capture, so the result can include the VM window, host menus, or other visible desktop content depending on whether Fusion is windowed or full-screen and what is on screen. It does not mean the guest’s own Print Screen handling was invoked.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The image shows host controls or desktop space
You likely used the host OS capture tool. That is the right choice when you need the whole VM window or surrounding desktop, but use a guest-display command or send a key to the guest if you want only guest content.

Print Screen does not put an image on the guest clipboard
For the documented Fusion workflow, choose Virtual Machine > Send Key > Print Scrn and confirm that the guest is Windows. Then paste into an image-capable application inside the guest. If the menu item or behavior differs, verify the instructions for the installed Fusion version.
A shortcut triggers the wrong action
Check which window has keyboard focus and whether the key is being handled by the host or guest. In Hyper-V VMConnect, Microsoft distinguishes CTRL+C screen capture from CTRL+N checkpoint creation and CTRL+E checkpoint reversion. Do not treat checkpoint shortcuts as screenshot commands.
The VirtualBox command cannot find the VM or save the PNG
Check that the VM name matches the name known to VirtualBox and that the destination path is valid and writable on the host. If the VM has multiple displays, consult the installed command syntax and set the intended display selector. The cited command documentation establishes the operation and display selection, but does not specify a universal host shell, quoting convention, or error message for every operating system; follow the shell and release-specific guidance for your setup.

The screenshot is incomplete or at an unexpected size
First establish whether the capture method records a guest display or the host screen, and whether it selects one display or another. Guest display modes and resizing can also vary; VirtualBox documents Guest Additions as providing additional video modes and resizing integration for certain guest systems. That does not make Guest Additions a requirement for the documented screenshot command.

What to do next
Use a guest-display capture when you need only the virtual machine’s content, a guest-handled key when the guest should create or clipboard the image, and the host screenshot tool when the VM window or desktop context matters. Keep screenshots and checkpoints separate: one gives you an image, the other preserves machine state.
