Capture the deployment screen with Windows + Shift + S when the Snipping Tool surface is available, and open Autopilot’s own evidence page with Ctrl + Shift + D during OOBE. Export the diagnostics to a labeled USB drive, then match the files to screenshots by time. Because Microsoft does not promise that Snipping Tool appears on every ESP or OOBE screen, prepare a VM-host capture or external camera as a fallback.

What you can capture, and when

Windows 11 Autopilot has two different evidence needs. A screenshot records what an operator saw: a progress percentage, error message, account prompt or app-install stage. Autopilot diagnostics record deployment state and device data that a screenshot cannot. The most useful incident record pairs both at the same milestone.

Method Coverage Persistence ESP/OOBE availability Operational effect
Snipping Tool image snip Rectangle, freeform, window or full screen Clipboard and a saved image Verify on the target image; not guaranteed on every surface Brief capture overlay
Snipping Tool video snip Rectangular video region Saved recording Verify support in the target image Runs while the selected region is recorded
Autopilot Diagnostics Page Deployment diagnostics and logs Exported files on USB, including a CSV hardware hash Windows 11 user-driven OOBE with a work or school account Opens a diagnostics view; export requires removable storage
VM host or external camera Whatever the host or camera sees Host file or camera media Works when the guest capture UI is unavailable Does not depend on Windows shell availability

Prepare the Autopilot profile before deployment

  1. In Intune, open the Windows Autopilot deployment profile and its Enrollment Status Page (ESP) settings.
  2. Enable Show app and profile configuration progress. This exposes more useful progress context while the ESP is running.
  3. Enable Turn on log collection and diagnostics page for end users. Microsoft documents this diagnostics experience for Windows 11 user-driven deployments signed in with a work or school account.
  4. Assign and sync the profile before starting the run. Record the device name, serial number, deployment profile, test account and the UTC start time in your incident notes.
  5. Prepare a clearly labeled USB flash drive. Leave enough space for exported logs and keep it dedicated to this run so files from multiple devices cannot be confused.

Do not assume that enabling diagnostics makes the Snipping Tool available. The profile controls Autopilot diagnostics; Snipping Tool availability depends on the Windows image and the OOBE/ESP surface currently displayed.

Capture an image or video of the visible screen

Image capture

  1. When the relevant screen is visible and the Windows capture surface responds, press Windows + Shift + S.
  2. Choose rectangle, freeform, window or full-screen mode.
  3. Include the complete error text, progress stage and clock where possible. Avoid cropping away the title or status area that identifies the stage.
  4. Use the Snipping Tool notification or editor to save the image. Windows 11 documentation also describes automatic saving to the Screenshots folder on supported builds; verify the file exists before continuing.
  5. Name the file with an ordered timestamp, for example 2026-09-29T14-32-18Z-ESP-error.png. Keep the original file rather than editing over it.

Video capture

  1. Press Windows + Shift + R for a rectangular video snip when that shortcut is supported.
  2. Drag around the portion of the ESP or OOBE screen that changes, then start recording.
  3. Stop as soon as the transition or error is documented. Save the recording with the same timestamp convention.

A video can show a stall or reboot sequence that a still image cannot, but it is larger and may distract from the deployment. Use it for a reproducible transition, not for every milestone.

Open Autopilot diagnostics at the milestone or failure

  1. At the OOBE screen, press Ctrl + Shift + D. Microsoft states that Autopilot Diagnostics are available in OOBE and that this keystroke opens the Diagnostics Page.
  2. If the interface exposes it, select View Diagnostics instead.
  3. Wait for the page to populate. Capture the page itself if you need a visual record of the categories or error text.
  4. Insert the labeled USB flash drive and use the page’s export command to write the logs.
  5. Confirm that the export completed before removing the drive. Preserve the exported files with the screenshots from the same run.

The export includes a CSV hardware hash according to Microsoft’s Autopilot diagnostics documentation. Treat that file as device-identifying information and store it according to your organization’s security policy.

Pair screenshots with logs

Use one evidence folder per device and deployment attempt. A practical layout is:

  • 01-screen for PNG, JPEG or video captures;
  • 02-autopilot-export for files copied from the USB drive;
  • 03-event-log for records collected after the run;
  • manifest.txt containing device, profile, account, timezone and UTC timestamps.

Do not rely only on a filename. Write the exact on-screen milestone in the manifest, such as “ESP, device preparation, app 4 of 12” or “OOBE account sign-in error.” If a clock is visible in the capture, use it to reconcile local time with UTC.

Use a command shell when the interface is stuck

At an OOBE sign-in prompt, press Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt. If a PowerShell command is required, start it with:

powershell.exe

This shell is for troubleshooting and evidence collection, not for bypassing enrollment controls. Commands can change device state or expose sensitive data, so record what was run and close the window when finished.

Review event evidence after the run

Once Windows reaches the desktop, open Event Viewer and navigate to:

Export or record the relevant events and correlate their timestamps with the screenshot and diagnostics export. Event records can explain a failure that is only partially visible in the ESP.

When Windows + Shift + S does nothing

The shortcut is ignored

This usually means the Snipping Tool capture surface is not available in that OOBE or ESP context, or the key event is being handled by the VM console. Try the host’s screenshot function. For a physical device, photograph the screen without obscuring the error. Mark the image as an external capture in your manifest.

Only part of the screen is useful

Use a full-screen snip first, then a second region snip for readable error text. Two files with the same timestamp prefix are easier to interpret than one aggressively cropped image.

The capture was copied but not saved

Paste it into an approved image editor or use Snipping Tool’s save command immediately. Clipboard contents can be lost when the device reboots or another capture occurs.

Diagnostics will not open

Confirm that you are still in OOBE, that the device is using a Windows 11 user-driven deployment with a work or school account, and that the ESP profile has log collection and the diagnostics page enabled. If the page remains unavailable, preserve screenshots, host captures and post-deployment event logs instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The USB export is missing

Use a known-good, writable USB drive, insert it before starting the export, and wait for completion. Keep the drive connected until the page confirms the operation. If the export still fails, document the failure and collect the available on-screen evidence.

Performance, reliability and handling notes

  • Capture at state changes: record the initial ESP, each meaningful error, a prolonged stall and the final result rather than taking hundreds of near-identical images.
  • Keep deployment uninterrupted: a still snip is less disruptive than a long video. Do not reboot solely to obtain a cleaner image.
  • Preserve originals: do not resize or annotate the only copy. Create a derivative for tickets and retain the original evidence.
  • Protect identifiers: diagnostics exports and hardware hashes can identify a device. Restrict access and redact copies shared outside the deployment team.
  • Use consistent clocks: record UTC and the device’s displayed timezone so event-log times can be matched reliably.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of a web-based status page, report or portal rather than the local Autopilot screen, ScreenshotNeo provides a single HTTP request. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed; and its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots.

FAQ

Can I capture the ESP before signing in?

Sometimes. Test Windows + Shift + S on the exact Windows image and deployment mode. If the capture surface is unavailable, use the VM host or an external camera.

Does Ctrl + Shift + D work from the Windows desktop?

It is documented for the Autopilot Diagnostics Page during OOBE. Use Event Viewer and exported records after deployment instead of expecting the shortcut to open a desktop diagnostics page.

What should I do with the hardware-hash CSV?

Keep it with the matching diagnostics export in the protected device evidence folder and limit access because it identifies hardware.
