You can schedule screenshots of a public Indian railway booking page by using Playwright to capture it and an operating-system scheduler or approved job runner to start the script at set times. Keep the capture limited to public information: IRCTC’s published terms do not clearly settle whether private recurring screenshots are permitted, and its booking controls are intended to deter automated booking. Do not automate sign-in, ticket booking, CAPTCHA handling, or other restricted interactions.
Check the page and permission before automating
Choose a page that is publicly viewable without signing in, entering passenger details, looking up a PNR, or proceeding to payment. Avoid saving credentials or authenticated browser state for this task; IRCTC’s privacy policy discusses logged session activity and personal and traveller information.
IRCTC’s terms of use say, “This Website is for your personal and non- commercial use,” and restrict copying, displaying, reproducing, or making derivative works from site information without permission. Its privacy policy likewise says information or material may be accessed or downloaded only for personal and non-commercial use. Those clauses are important, but they do not expressly determine whether a private, periodic screenshot of a public page is allowed. Do not treat them as a definitive yes or no. For recurring high-volume capture, commercial use, or redistribution, ask IRCTC for permission or seek qualified advice first; check the current terms and policy before relying on them.

If a challenge appears, the page blocks access, or capture would require login or booking interaction, stop rather than trying to bypass the control.

Choose what to capture and where the schedule runs
Choose the screenshot shape

Choose where it runs
- Local computer: easy access to a local output folder, but it must be powered on and available at the scheduled time. You maintain the browser and script.
- Approved hosted runner: can run independently of your personal computer, but confirm that the runner is permitted for your use, can reach the public page, and has an appropriate restricted location for the image files. You maintain its schedule and browser environment.
No particular scheduler or hosted service is required. The important separation is that Playwright captures the page while the scheduler launches your script at the chosen interval.
Build a cautious Playwright capture script
The example below uses Python, Chromium, a fixed viewport, a modest navigation timeout, and a timestamped filename so each run creates a separate image. It targets a placeholder public URL: replace it with the exact public page you are allowed to capture. The script does not sign in, submit forms, or interact with booking controls.

Install Playwright
- Install Python 3 if it is not already available on the machine or runner.
- Create and activate a virtual environment in your project directory.
- Install Playwright and its Chromium browser:

Save the capture script
Save this as capture_public_page.py. It creates a screenshots folder next to the script and writes a UTC timestamp into each filename.

main()For a page whose meaningful content appears after initial HTML parsing, wait for a known public-content selector rather than adding a long arbitrary sleep. If a page needs scrolling to reveal lazy-loaded material, a full-page screenshot may not include everything until that material has loaded. Keep the script limited to passive capture; do not make it click through account, CAPTCHA, or booking steps.
Run it once by hand
From the project directory, run python capture_public_page.py. Confirm that the output image contains the intended public content, that the timestamp is correct, and that the script exits cleanly before configuring a recurring schedule.

Schedule the script
Use the scheduler available on your operating system or an approved runner. Set the intended interval and timezone explicitly, and use the full path to the Python interpreter and script. Scheduler menus and configuration syntax vary by operating system and are not interchangeable; consult the current documentation for the scheduler you use. The machine or runner must be available at the scheduled time, and the output directory must remain writable.
- Record the absolute path to
capture_public_page.pyand to the Python environment where Playwright is installed. - Create a scheduled task that invokes that interpreter with the script path at the desired interval.
- Set the schedule’s timezone and confirm whether it follows daylight-saving changes, if relevant to your location.
- Run the task once through the scheduler’s own “run now” or equivalent option, then check its logs and the output folder.
- Keep the interval modest. If the site returns a challenge, blocks the request, or requires login, disable the task and do not attempt to evade the control.
Keep captures consistent and private
For meaningful visual comparisons, keep the operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware where practical, power conditions, viewport, and headless or headed mode consistent. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors in its visual comparison guidance.
- Store images in a folder with access restricted to people who need them, and delete captures when they are no longer needed.
- Inspect an image before sharing it. Do not distribute screenshots that expose names, account details, PNRs, journey plans, or payment information.
- Use timestamped names and monitor folder growth; scheduled image files accumulate unless you remove them.
- Keep the capture target public and stable. A changed page structure can make a selector wait fail or cause the wrong content to be captured.
Troubleshooting
The script says Playwright or Chromium is missing
Install the Python package in the same environment used to run the script, then install the browser with python -m playwright install chromium. A scheduler may use a different Python interpreter than your terminal, so configure it with the full interpreter path.

Navigation times out or the page is blank
Check that the URL is correct and publicly reachable from the machine or runner. Some pages continue making network requests after their main content is ready, so the example waits for domcontentloaded rather than network idle. If the page itself is slow, adjust the timeout cautiously and wait for a visible public-content selector. A timeout or empty page is not a reason to evade a block or challenge.
The capture shows a CAPTCHA, block, or login page
Stop the scheduled task. Do not solve CAPTCHA automatically, bypass a challenge, or use the script to proceed into booking or account activity. Reassess whether capture is appropriate and seek permission if needed.
Every run overwrites the previous image
Use a unique timestamp in each output filename, as in the example. If runs may occur within the same second, include finer timestamp precision or otherwise ensure filenames are unique.

The screenshot looks different between runs
Fix the viewport and keep the browser version, operating system, and headless mode stable. Dynamic page content can also change between captures, so an image difference does not necessarily indicate a rendering problem.
The scheduled run produces no file
Run the script using the scheduler’s configured interpreter and working directory, inspect the scheduler’s logs, and verify that the output directory is writable. A local schedule cannot run while the computer is unavailable; a hosted runner also needs permission and an accessible storage destination.

Can a screenshot of a public page include the full page rather than just the visible screen?
Yes. In Playwright, pass full_page=True to page.screenshot; use a normal viewport screenshot when you only need the visible browser area.
Can I use the same script to automate IRCTC ticket booking?
No. This workflow is for passive capture of public content, not login, booking, CAPTCHA handling, or evading anti-automation controls.
