Use Chrome DevTools Device Mode to set a consistent viewport, then capture either the visible screen or the full page. Label each image with its viewport dimensions and capture context so clients can tell which responsive state they are seeing. Device Mode is an approximation, not proof of how a site behaves on a physical phone.
Choose the screenshot that supports the design decision
A viewport screenshot records what is visible within the selected width and height. Use it to show what fits on screen at a particular responsive size. A full-size screenshot captures content beyond the current viewport; use it when the page’s overall structure matters.
For comparisons, capture the same page or component at clearly recorded viewport widths and heights. Keep those dimensions consistent across alternatives. If the question is about actual device-specific behavior, pair the emulated capture with a check on a real device.
Capture a responsive screenshot in Chrome DevTools
- Open the website in Chrome, then open DevTools.
- Turn on Device Mode. Choose Responsive to enter custom dimensions, or select a device preset when a named device profile is relevant.
- Set the viewport width and height that best communicate the design decision. Record the dimensions or keep them visible in the presentation.
- To capture only the visible viewport, select More options > Capture screenshot. To capture the entire page, select More options > Capture full size screenshot.
- Name or caption the exported image with the page or section, viewport width and height, and capture context. Use the same dimensions when comparing alternatives.
- Review each image at the size it will appear in the presentation. Confirm that the relevant content is readable and not hidden by a banner, menu, loading state, or other temporary content.
Make the presentation comparison clear
- State whether each image shows a viewport or the full page.
- Include the viewport width and height, and identify the page or component shown.
- Use matching viewport dimensions for alternatives when the purpose is to compare their responsive layouts.
- Explain what the capture is meant to demonstrate—for example, what fits above the fold or how the page’s overall structure changes.
- Do not present an emulated image as evidence of testing on a physical phone.
What Device Mode can—and cannot—show
Chrome describes Device Mode as “a first-order approximation of how your page looks and feels on a mobile device.” It simulates a mobile experience from a desktop or laptop; some device behavior cannot be simulated. When the result depends on actual device behavior, Chrome recommends running the page on a mobile device. See Google Chrome’s Device Mode documentation for viewport simulation, screenshot options, device frames, and remote debugging.
