Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. When the screen dims, choose Rectangle or Freeform, drag around the area you need, and release. Windows copies the result to the clipboard; press Ctrl + V to paste it into an email, document, chat, or image editor. Open the Snipping Tool notification if you want to annotate, save, or share the capture as a file.

Capture a region with Windows + Shift + S

  1. Arrange the desktop so the content you want is visible.
  2. Press Windows + Shift + S. The screen dims and the screen-snipping overlay appears. Microsoft documents this shortcut for selecting a region and copying an image snapshot to the clipboard (Microsoft Support).
  3. Choose a capture mode from the toolbar. For part of the screen, select Rectangle or Freeform.
  4. Hold the mouse button, drag around the target, and release. The selected pixels are captured.
  5. Press Ctrl + V in the destination app. The image can be pasted into a message, document, presentation, or graphics program.

A notification normally appears after the selection. Select it to open the capture in Snipping Tool, where you can mark it up, save it, or share it.

Choose the right snipping mode

Mode What it captures Best use
Rectangle A rectangular area you draw. Most cropped screenshots, such as a dialog, chart, or paragraph.
Freeform An irregular outline you draw by hand. When the useful object is not rectangular.
Window One application window. Capturing a complete app without manually tracing its edges.
Full screen Everything displayed on the screen. A complete desktop view rather than a region.

The overlay lets you change the mode before making the selection. Rectangle and Freeform are the choices for a partial-screen image; Window and Full screen select a predefined extent instead of a hand-drawn area.

Clipboard versus a saved screenshot

Windows + Shift + S creates a clipboard image first. It is not necessarily a file in Pictures or on the desktop. Paste it immediately with Ctrl + V, or select the notification to open it in Snipping Tool.

Save from Snipping Tool

  1. Open the capture notification, or start Snipping Tool from the Start menu and use its capture controls.
  2. Use the editing tools if you need to draw, highlight, or crop.
  3. Choose the save command, select a folder and file name, and confirm the image format offered by your Windows 10 installation.

Saving through the app is the dependable way to create a reusable file. If you only pasted the image into another application, the copy in that application may be the only saved version until you save that document or export the image.

Open Snipping Tool without the shortcut

Search for Snipping Tool from Start and open it. Select New to begin a capture, then choose a mode from the tool’s mode controls. Microsoft lists the same four modes and the Windows + Shift + S shortcut in its Snipping Tool instructions.

This route is useful when a keyboard shortcut is intercepted by another program, when you prefer a visible button, or when you want the editor open before selecting an area.

Other Windows 10 screenshot shortcuts

Copy the entire screen

Press PrtScn to copy a full-screen image to the clipboard. It does not select a region. Paste the result with Ctrl + V. Microsoft describes this behavior in its screen-copy instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make PrtScn open the snipping interface

Windows 10 provides a setting that assigns the Print Screen key to screen snipping. Go to Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard, then turn on the Print Screen shortcut setting. The exact wording can vary by Windows 10 release; Microsoft documents the path in its keyboard-shortcut guidance.

Where did the screenshot go?

  • If you used Windows + Shift + S, look first in the clipboard: open the target app and press Ctrl + V.
  • If you clicked the notification and saved from Snipping Tool, look in the folder and file name you selected in the Save dialog.
  • If you pasted it into an existing document or message, the image is stored with that document or message only after you save or send it.

The shortcut’s immediate destination is the clipboard, not a guaranteed automatic file location. Opening the notification gives you the Windows interface for editing and saving.

Troubleshoot a partial-screen capture

Nothing happens when you press Windows + Shift + S

  • Press all three keys together and make sure you are using the Windows logo key, not Ctrl or Alt.
  • Search for Snipping Tool from Start and select New. This bypasses a shortcut conflict and confirms whether the app itself opens.
  • If another application has remapped the keys, keep using Snipping Tool’s on-screen controls or remove that remapping.

The image is not where you expected

Use Ctrl + V in an image editor, document, or message. A Windows + Shift + S capture is a clipboard result until you open Snipping Tool and save it, so browsing common screenshot folders may not find it.

The selection has the wrong shape or extent

Open the overlay again and select Rectangle for a precise box or Freeform for an irregular outline. Choose Window when you want one app’s window bounds, or Full screen when you need everything visible.

You need to edit or send the capture

Select the notification immediately after the snip. Snipping Tool provides the editing, saving, and sharing workflow; alternatively, paste the clipboard image into an application that has its own markup or export commands.

The shortcut is unavailable on a managed PC

Corporate policies or keyboard utilities can change shortcut behavior. Launch Snipping Tool from Start and use New. If the application itself is missing or fails to start, the device administrator may need to repair or restore the Windows component.

A reliable workflow for documentation and support

  1. Close or move unrelated windows before opening the overlay so private information is not included.
  2. Use Rectangle for a clean crop around the exact control, error, or value you are explaining.
  3. Open the notification, add only the annotations needed to identify the issue, and save a copy before sending it.
  4. Paste the image into the final ticket or document, then verify that the recipient can see the image before closing the original capture.

For an immediate one-off image, the clipboard is fastest. For an attachment, archive, or edited illustration, open Snipping Tool and save a file.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10, although the PC continues to work. This support change is separate from the screenshot procedure: the built-in shortcut and Snipping Tool workflow described above are still the relevant Windows 10 controls. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard tips and tricks for the support-status note.

If what you need is a screenshot of a webpage rather than the physical Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one HTTP request. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, so it is useful for automated documentation, monitoring, or capturing pages in a build process—not for selecting arbitrary pixels from your local display.

For a webpage capture, create an API key and use the URL-encoded request shown in the ScreenshotNeo documentation:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The same request in Python:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

And in Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

ScreenshotNeo accepts PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output and can perform tasks such as full-page capture with lazy images, a CSS-element capture, dark mode, device and viewport selection, retina scale, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation. It can also resize images, cache with a chosen TTL, create signed links, run asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call, and expose usage and OpenAPI endpoints. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by many screenshot APIs.

  • Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be disabled.
  • Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
  • An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing provides two months free, and every feature is available on every plan.

Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try the 1,000 monthly shots without entering a card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Windows + Shift + S record video?

No. It creates an image snapshot. Use a separate screen-recording feature when you need motion or audio.

Does Windows 10 support ending disable these screenshot controls?

No. The end of free updates, technical assistance, and security fixes is a support-status change; it does not by itself remove the existing Snipping Tool shortcut from a working installation.
