The reliable method is scroll first, capture second. A full-page screenshot setting extends the image beyond the visible viewport, but it does not necessarily perform the scrolling that triggers lazy-loading code. Load the page, scroll through it in viewport-sized steps while waiting for images and scripts, then capture the full scrollable page and inspect the result.
Why full-page screenshots can miss images
Lazy loading defers an image request until the image approaches or enters the browser viewport. This saves bandwidth during normal browsing, but it creates a distinction that matters to automation:
- Capture extent: a full-page option determines how much of the document is included in the screenshot.
- Loading trigger: the page’s JavaScript may require an element to become visible before it requests or renders the image.
Playwright documents fullPage: true as capturing the full scrollable page, and its screenshot guide describes the result as a full page represented as though it fit on a very tall screen (Page API; Screenshots guide). Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) provides Page.captureScreenshot and a captureBeyondViewport option (CDP Page reference). Those controls describe image capture; neither reference promises that every site’s lazy-loading handlers will run automatically.
Google Search Central’s guidance is the practical clue: relevant lazy-loaded content should load when it becomes visible, and infinite-scroll pages can append additional pages as the user scrolls (Google’s lazy-loading guidance). Therefore, trigger visibility deliberately before calling the screenshot API.

The repeatable scroll-then-capture workflow
- Load the page. Wait for the initial DOM and critical network activity to settle.
- Scroll in viewport-sized increments. Move down roughly one viewport at a time rather than jumping directly to the bottom.
- Pause at each position. Give intersection observers, image requests, decoding, and layout updates time to complete.
- Continue to the intended boundary. On a normal document, stop after reaching the bottom. On infinite scroll, define a stopping condition such as a known item count, a “no more results” marker, or a maximum number of passes.
- Return to the top. Do this when the final image should begin at the document’s top.
- Capture the full page. Use Playwright’s
fullPage: trueor the corresponding browser/protocol command. - Inspect the output. Check lower sections, image placeholders, layout shifts, sticky headers, and nested scroll areas.
The pause duration and number of passes are site-dependent. Custom intersection observers, delayed APIs, background images, nested scrolling containers, and infinite loading can all require a tailored routine. A successful screenshot call is not proof that every source asset loaded.
Playwright: complete example
Install Playwright and its browser once:
npm install -D playwright
npx playwright install chromium
This Node.js script scrolls through the document, waits briefly at each step, returns to the top, and writes a full-page PNG:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com/gallery', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 90000 });
await page.waitForTimeout(1000); // initial scripts and layout
let previousHeight = 0;
let stablePasses = 0;
for (let pass = 0; pass < 80; pass++) {
const height = await page.evaluate(() => document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
const viewport = await page.evaluate(() => window.innerHeight);
for (let y = 0; y < height; y += viewport) {
await page.evaluate(y => window.scrollTo(0, y), y);
await page.waitForTimeout(350);
}
await page.waitForTimeout(800);
const newHeight = await page.evaluate(() => document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
if (newHeight === previousHeight) stablePasses++; else stablePasses = 0;
previousHeight = newHeight;
if (stablePasses >= 2) break; // useful end condition for many infinite lists
}
await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollTo(0, 0));
await page.waitForTimeout(300);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
The height-stability loop is only an example. For an infinite feed that keeps inserting advertisements or recommendations, use a known content marker or item count instead of waiting for a stable document height. For a page with a nested scrolling panel, scroll that panel explicitly:

await page.locator('.results-panel').evaluate(el => {
el.scrollTop = el.scrollHeight;
});
await page.waitForTimeout(1000);
Waiting for images before capture
After scrolling, you can wait for currently discovered images to finish loading. This does not find images hidden behind site-specific logic, but it catches slow requests that have already started:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →await page.waitForFunction(() => {
return [...document.images].every(img => img.complete && img.naturalWidth > 0);
}, { timeout: 30000 });
If a page intentionally contains a broken image, replace the predicate with a selector-based check for the assets that matter. Also allow for layout movement: capture only after the final image dimensions and fonts have settled.
Chrome DevTools Protocol alternative
CDP is appropriate when your application already drives Chrome directly. Enable the Page domain, perform the same scrolling through the browser runtime, then call Page.captureScreenshot with captureBeyondViewport where supported. The protocol option changes capture behavior; it does not replace the scrolling step required by viewport-triggered loaders.

// Conceptual CDP sequence
await client.send('Page.enable');
await client.send('Runtime.evaluate', { expression:
'window.scrollTo(0, document.documentElement.scrollHeight)' });
// wait, repeat viewport-sized scrolling, then:
const result = await client.send('Page.captureScreenshot', {
format: 'png',
captureBeyondViewport: true
});
Exact client setup differs between Puppeteer, Selenium integrations, and custom CDP clients. Keep the operational sequence—scroll, wait, verify, capture—regardless of the wrapper.
Manual browser method
- Open the page in Chrome or another browser.
- Scroll steadily from top to bottom, pausing where image rows appear.
- For an infinite page, stop at the content boundary you need and wait for the final batch.
- Return to the top.
- Use the browser’s full-page capture command or a trusted capture extension.
- Open the saved image and inspect the bottom and every image-heavy section.
Manual capture is useful for one-off work, but it is harder to reproduce. Record the viewport size, zoom, stopping rule, and any interaction (such as clicking “Load more”) if the screenshot must be regenerated.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Top images appear, lower images are blank | Capture extended the canvas without triggering visibility-based loading | Scroll in viewport steps, pause, then capture |
| Only the first batch of an infinite list appears | The list appends content only after scrolling or a “Load more” action | Use an explicit item-count, marker, or maximum-pass stopping condition |
| Images are present but the screenshot is clipped | Nested scroll container was never traversed | Scroll the container element, not only window |
| Screenshot contains placeholders | Requests, decoding, or layout are still in progress | Wait for relevant images to be complete and inspect network/page state |
| Sticky header repeats or covers content | Capture behavior interacts with fixed-position elements | Hide the header for the capture, add capture CSS, or accept the site’s intended fixed UI |
| Height keeps increasing forever | Ads, recommendations, or endless pagination are still being inserted | Stop on a defined content boundary rather than document-height stability |
| Background images remain missing | They are CSS resources, not <img> elements, and use custom triggers |
Scroll the owning component and wait for its state; verify computed styles and the final pixels |
Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
Scrolling adds time proportional to page height and the delay needed for each image batch. Smaller waits reduce runtime but increase the risk of capturing before requests finish; larger waits improve reliability at the cost of throughput. For repeatable jobs, keep viewport dimensions, device scale, network conditions, timeout, and stopping rule consistent.

Do not assume that a visually complete page proves that all original assets were fetched. Some sites render low-resolution placeholders, use responsive sources, or replace images after the screenshot starts. Validate pixels in the output and, when necessary, log image dimensions or selected resource responses.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture full pages with lazy images loaded, while removing cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
One GET request is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the complete options and parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The service also supports element capture, dark mode, device presets, retina scale, PDF output, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, geolocation, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API. Frequently Asked Questions
Does fullPage: true always load lazy images?
No. It captures the full scrollable page, but a site’s lazy-loading code may require the elements to become visible first. Scroll and wait before calling the screenshot method.
How should I handle an infinite-scroll page?
Choose a deliberate boundary—such as an item count, end marker, or maximum number of scroll passes—because the page may continue appending content indefinitely.
Why are images still missing after scrolling?
Check nested scroll containers, custom intersection logic, background images, delayed requests, and layout shifts. Inspect the final pixels rather than relying only on a successful API response.
