To capture a JavaScript-rendered page with wkhtmltoimage, leave JavaScript enabled and give the page time to render. Start with --javascript-delay; if you control the page, you can also try --window-status as a readiness signal. Verify the result with the exact binary and page you need to capture: neither setting guarantees that every script-heavy page will finish correctly.
Check the installed version and keep JavaScript enabled
First check which build is installed:
wkhtmltoimage --versionPackage builds can differ, so record the version when diagnosing a capture. JavaScript is enabled by default according to the wkhtmltoimage command-line documentation. Do not pass --disable-javascript when the page depends on client-side rendering.
Use a delay for pages you cannot change
The documented default JavaScript delay is 200 ms. That is a default, not a guarantee that a modern or complex page has finished rendering. Increase it for the target page and inspect the resulting image:
wkhtmltoimage --javascript-delay 2000 https://example.com/page capture.pngThe delay is specified in milliseconds. A fixed wait is easy to use without changing the website, but it may either capture too early or wait longer than necessary. Adjust it based on the page’s actual rendering time.

Use a readiness signal when you control the page
If you can modify the page, set window.status to a known value only after the content you need is ready. Then ask wkhtmltoimage to wait for that exact value:
wkhtmltoimage --window-status ready https://example.com/page capture.pngThe documented behavior is to wait until window.status equals the supplied string. Make sure the page really sets window.status = 'ready' at the right point; a different value, or a signal that is never set, will not satisfy the requested match.

Archived project issues report inconsistent behavior with wait options in some versions and environments, including ignored signals and waits that did not end as expected. These historical reports do not establish that the options always fail, but they make testing with your installed build essential. The project issue tracker records a regression and a fix associated with milestone 0.12.2.1; later reports still describe practical variability. See issue #2142 and issue #2217.
Do not assume the two wait options have a portable interaction
A 2015 issue records one user’s observation that combining --javascript-delay and --window-status appeared to wait longer. Other archived reports describe indefinite waits or unexpected behavior. The documentation does not establish a universal timeout or an “whichever comes first” rule for the combination, so test that exact invocation rather than relying on a presumed interaction. Diagnose an incomplete capture
Work through these checks in order. The first two settings are documented; the remaining checks are practical troubleshooting steps for isolating why the expected content is missing.
- Confirm the command does not include
--disable-javascript. - Increase
--javascript-delayand compare the output. - Check that the page’s scripts and required resources load successfully, and that authentication or other access requirements are satisfied.
- If using
--window-status, verify the page sets the exact requested status value after the relevant content is ready. - Run the command against a minimal page or reproduction, using the same binary, to help isolate a page-specific problem from a build-specific one.
For JavaScript errors, add --debug-javascript to enable JavaScript debugging output:

wkhtmltoimage --debug-javascript --javascript-delay 2000 https://example.com/page capture.pngA longer delay only gives existing page work more time. It cannot repair script errors, blocked resources, access problems, or browser-feature incompatibilities.

The wkhtmltopdf upstream repository was archived in January 2023. Its documentation and issue tracker remain useful references, but they do not promise ongoing upstream fixes. If your page depends on browser behavior the installed build cannot reproduce, use a current browser-automation renderer that supports the features the page needs, and verify the output for your target page. The Debian wkhtmltoimage manpage also lists JavaScript and wait options; your installed package’s behavior remains the relevant test.

The project command-line documentation lists 200 ms. Treat it as a default value, not a guarantee that a particular page has finished rendering.
Does –window-status stop waiting after a fixed timeout?
The command-line documentation describes waiting for an equality match, but does not establish a portable timeout behavior. Test the option with your installed build and page.
