To capture a competitor page after its JavaScript has rendered, open it in a real browser with Playwright or Puppeteer, wait for the content you want to inspect, then save a full-page or element screenshot. For recurring site crawls, Screaming Frog SEO Spider can capture rendered-page screenshots alongside crawl data. Record the URL, time, viewport, browser and wait condition with every image: a screenshot shows one browser’s view at one moment, not what Google indexed.
Choose the capture method for the job

Capture a rendered page with Playwright
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser, then use a page-specific signal to determine when the visible content is ready. The example below waits for a headline selector rather than assuming that the initial navigation event means the client-rendered page is complete.
- Install: run
npm init -y, thennpm install playwrightandnpx playwright install chromium. - Save as
capture.js:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const target = 'https://example.com/competitor-page';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
try {
await page.goto(target, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 60000 });
// Replace this with a selector that signals the content you need is rendered.
await page.locator('main h1').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 30000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'competitor-desktop.png', fullPage: true });
console.log(`Captured ${page.url()}`);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Run it with node capture.js. Replace the target URL and selector with the page and meaningful ready condition you are studying. A selector should indicate that the relevant content has appeared; a generic headline may not be enough if the specific section of interest loads later.
Capture only a relevant element
When the comparison concerns a product card, pricing section or article body, capture that locator rather than a full page. This reduces irrelevant page chrome and makes side-by-side review easier.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
await page.locator('.pricing-table').screenshot({ path: 'pricing.png' });
Use a selector that is stable enough for the target site and verify that it resolves to the intended element. Locator screenshots capture the selected element, not content outside it.
Choose a wait condition deliberately
Navigation completion and application readiness are different. JavaScript may render content after the initial HTML arrives, and lazy-loaded sections may depend on scrolling or interaction. Wait for the exact visible element, known state, or controlled action relevant to your comparison. There is no universal wait condition that works for every competitor site. If the target requires a click to expose a menu or tab, perform that interaction before capturing and record it.
Capture a mobile view separately
Set a deliberate viewport for mobile instead of shrinking a desktop screenshot after capture. For a simple viewport capture, create a second page or set its viewport before navigating:

const mobile = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 390, height: 844 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
isMobile: true,
hasTouch: true
});
await mobile.goto(target, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 60000 });
await mobile.locator('main h1').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 30000 });
await mobile.screenshot({ path: 'competitor-mobile.png', fullPage: true });
Use viewport and device behavior consistently between captures. Mobile layout, touch interactions and desktop layout can expose different content, so treat them as separate observations.
Use Puppeteer if your workflow already uses it
Puppeteer is a JavaScript browser-automation library that supports screenshot capture. Its maintained documentation is the appropriate place to confirm current API details. A basic full-page example follows; as with Playwright, replace the example URL and add a page-specific readiness check for the content being studied.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 1000 });
await page.goto('https://example.com/competitor-page', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 60000
});
await page.waitForSelector('main h1', { visible: true, timeout: 30000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'competitor.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
See Puppeteer’s documentation for maintained usage details.

Capture rendered pages during a Screaming Frog crawl
For crawl-based analysis, Screaming Frog SEO Spider documents JavaScript rendering and rendered-page screenshots in its configuration guide. With JavaScript rendering selected, rendered screenshots are enabled by default. The guide describes Googlebot desktop or smartphone and custom window choices, configurable width and height, scaling, mobile/touch settings, and a resize-to-content option.
- Without resize-to-content, the screenshot is limited to the configured viewport.
- With resize-to-content, the guide says capture aims to include the full page up to 8192 pixels; that is a product limit, not an industry-wide standard.
- Check the selected viewport and mobile settings before interpreting screenshots as a desktop-versus-mobile comparison.
See the Screaming Frog configuration guide for the current configuration path and controls.

Record capture context
Keep a sidecar record or descriptive filename with each image. Include the exact URL, capture date and time in UTC, viewport dimensions, browser and automation-tool versions, locale, logged-in or logged-out state, consent selection, interaction performed, and wait condition. Without this context, a later reviewer may not know what the image represents or be able to reproduce it.

Keep the environment fixed for comparisons
For longitudinal or pixel-level comparisons, hold the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode constant where practical. Playwright identifies these as factors that can change rendering; its visual comparison documentation explains why environment changes can produce image differences. Pin the browser/tool setup and note intentional changes to viewport or versions. Playwright visual comparisons
Interpret the image as one observation
A screenshot documents what the selected browser showed at capture time. It can help compare visible layout, headings and content, but it does not prove that Google crawled, rendered or indexed the same material. Google describes crawling, rendering and indexing as distinct phases: eligible pages may be queued for rendering, where a headless Chromium renderer executes JavaScript when resources permit. Blocked resources or pages can prevent rendering, and not all bots execute JavaScript. For a site you own or are authorized to inspect, use Google’s URL Inspection and Search Console debugging tools to examine Google’s view rather than inferring it from an ordinary browser screenshot. Public visibility alone does not establish permission to automate access or republish captured material. The Ninth Circuit’s 2019 hiQ Labs v. Quick Recap
Troubleshooting capture problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot is blank or missing client-rendered content | Capture happened before the relevant application content appeared, or required resources were blocked or failed. | Wait for a page-specific visible selector or known state; check the rendered page in the browser and confirm needed resources load. |
| Wait for selector times out | The selector is wrong, the element never appears in this state, or the page needs an interaction or locale/state change. | Inspect the page’s rendered DOM, verify the selector, and reproduce the relevant consent, tab, scroll or click state without bypassing access controls. |
| Full-page image cuts off lower content | Content is lazy-loaded only on scroll, or the capture tool is limited by viewport or full-height behavior. | Scroll through the target page before capture if needed, wait for the relevant sections, and verify full-page/resizing settings. Screaming Frog’s documented resize-to-content capture aims up to 8192 pixels. |
| Two screenshots differ by many pixels | Viewport, browser, operating system, settings, hardware or headless mode changed—or the page itself changed. | Pin the environment and capture settings, note changes, and distinguish site changes from rendering-environment changes. |
| Screenshot seems inconsistent with Google results | A normal browser capture and Google’s crawl/render/index process are different observations. | For a site you control or may inspect, use Search Console URL Inspection and Google’s rendering/debugging guidance rather than treating the screenshot as indexing evidence. |
