Use MCP as the orchestration layer, but let Apple’s Simulator command do the capture. Boot the required iOS Simulator, connect an MCP client to a server that exposes a screenshot tool, pass the simulator’s UDID (or use the booted device), and have the server run xcrun simctl io <udid> screenshot /absolute/path/screenshot.png. The direct one-line equivalent is xcrun simctl io booted screenshot screenshot.png.
This guide covers setup, reliable device selection, output controls, diagnostics, and an alternative for capturing public web pages without managing a browser.
What MCP is doing in an iOS screenshot workflow
Model Context Protocol (MCP) does not render the Simulator itself. An MCP server receives a tool call from an MCP client such as an AI coding assistant, validates arguments, chooses a simulator, and invokes Apple’s simctl command. The resulting image is normally written to a path that the server can access; some servers also return image bytes or metadata.
That separation matters when diagnosing failures: a problem can be in the client connection, the MCP tool’s argument schema, Simulator state, xcrun/simctl, or filesystem permissions.

Prerequisites
- A Mac with Xcode installed.
- Xcode’s command-line tools available, including
simctl. Apple says these tools ship with Xcode. - An MCP client and a server that exposes a Simulator screenshot tool.
- At least one iOS Simulator runtime and device created in Xcode.
- An output directory writable by the MCP server process.
Make Xcode the active developer directory
If xcrun cannot find simctl, select the full Xcode installation:
sudo xcode-select --switch /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer
Verify the selection and command availability:
xcode-select -p
xcrun simctl help
If your Xcode is installed elsewhere, substitute its actual path. Accept any first-run Xcode license or component installation prompts before testing through MCP.
Boot the simulator and prepare the screen
- Open Xcode’s Simulator (for example, from Xcode’s Open Developer Tool menu) or start a device from the command line.
- Wait until the target device is fully booted, not merely listed as “Booting”.
- Launch your app and navigate to the exact state you need. Dismiss transient alerts, keyboard overlays, and permission prompts if they should not appear in the image.
- List devices to identify the state and UDID:
xcrun simctl list devices
A device marked (Booted) is eligible for the booted target. When multiple devices are booted, use a specific UDID rather than relying on whichever device the server chooses.
Configure and call an MCP screenshot tool
Every MCP server defines its own tool name and arguments. Typical arguments are:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11| Argument | Purpose | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Simulator identifier | Selects a device | Use a UDID for deterministic automation; use booted when exactly one simulator is running. |
| Output path | Where the image is saved | Use an absolute path such as /tmp/ios-shot.png if relative paths fail. |
| Format | Image encoding | PNG is the normal simctl output; some MCP servers add JPEG, TIFF, BMP, or GIF. |
| Display | Chooses internal or external display | Only available when the server and Simulator support it. |
| Mask policy | Handles non-rectangular displays | Implementations may expose ignored, alpha, or black. |
Read the server’s tool schema in your MCP client, then map these concepts to its exact parameter names. A robust request should explicitly provide the UDID, format, and absolute output path. If the server supports device discovery, confirm that its discovered device is the one you intended before capturing.

Use Apple’s command directly
Before debugging MCP, prove that Simulator and the output path work without orchestration:
xcrun simctl io booted screenshot screenshot.png
Apple documents booted as the running Simulator target and permits an optional filename. For a particular device, replace booted with its name or UDID:
xcrun simctl io 9A1B2C3D-EXAMPLE-UDID screenshot /tmp/iphone.png
Do not use the example UDID literally. Copy the identifier from xcrun simctl list devices. Check that the file exists and can be opened before involving the MCP client.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAutomation pattern for repeatable captures
- Reset or launch the app into a known state.
- Wait for a stable UI condition. A fixed delay can work, but an app-level readiness signal is safer.
- Call the MCP screenshot tool with an explicit UDID and unique output filename.
- Verify file creation and size in the client or a follow-up shell step.
- Record the Simulator model, iOS runtime, commit, and capture timestamp with the artifact.
When several jobs run concurrently, assign one Simulator UDID per job. Avoid two processes writing the same filename. Keep the server’s working directory and output directory stable so an AI client does not accidentally request a path outside its permitted workspace.
Formats, displays, and masks
PNG is the safest interchange format for pixel comparison and documentation. JPEG is smaller but introduces compression artifacts; use it only when that trade-off is acceptable. TIFF, BMP, and GIF are not guaranteed by simctl; they depend on the MCP implementation.

External-display capture and mask handling are likewise server-specific. A rounded or otherwise non-rectangular display may need a mask policy: preserve transparency with alpha, fill the outside with black, or ignore the mask. If an option is rejected, remove it and test the server’s documented defaults rather than passing a value copied from another MCP implementation.
Troubleshooting MCP screenshot failures
“xcrun: command not found” or “simctl unavailable”
Xcode or its command-line tools are missing, or the active developer directory points to standalone Command Line Tools. Install Xcode, run the first-launch setup, and switch with xcode-select --switch as shown above. Re-run xcrun simctl help.
No device is booted
Run xcrun simctl list devices. Start the intended device, wait for the Booted state, and retry. A device shown in the list but still booting is not ready for capture.
The wrong simulator is captured
booted is ambiguous when multiple devices are running. Pass the exact UDID in the MCP call and, if supported, disable automatic discovery.
“Unable to locate device”
Check that the UDID is copied exactly, belongs to an installed runtime, and still exists. Devices can be recreated, changing their identifiers. Retry with booted only after confirming that one—and only one—device is running.

The MCP tool reports success but no file appears
Use an absolute output path in a directory writable by the MCP process. The MCP server may run under a different user, sandbox, container, or working directory than your shell. Ask the tool for its resolved path if it provides one, and check for an existing file or a filename collision.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The direct command fails too
Run the command manually with /tmp/test.png. If that fails, MCP is not the cause: fix Simulator state, Xcode selection, device identification, or permissions first.
Format, display, or mask argument rejected
Those controls are implementation-dependent. Remove optional arguments, capture a default PNG from the internal display, then add one option at a time according to the server’s schema.
The screenshot shows an unexpected alert or blank app
Capture only after the app reaches its intended state. Resolve permission dialogs, network-dependent loading, and first-run onboarding inside the Simulator. For deterministic tests, seed data and use a stable test account rather than relying on a prior Simulator session.
Security and reliability considerations
- Treat MCP tool arguments as automation input. Restrict the server to approved output directories and review any tool that accepts arbitrary shell commands.
- Do not place secrets in filenames, logs, screenshots, or MCP prompts.
- Keep screenshots tied to a known Simulator runtime and device model; status bars, scale, and system UI can differ between runtimes.
- For CI, fail when the output file is missing or unexpectedly small, and preserve the MCP request plus command output for diagnosis.
- Prefer explicit UDIDs and unique filenames in parallel jobs. Use
bootedfor interactive work with one running device.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is a screenshot of a public website—not the local iOS Simulator—ScreenshotNeo provides a single HTTP request. It is separate from Simulator capture, but useful when an AI workflow needs web-page images without installing or driving a browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can MCP capture a Simulator screenshot without Xcode?
No. The documented workflow depends on Apple’s simctl, which ships with Xcode’s command-line tools.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I pass a device name or a UDID?
Use the UDID for repeatable scripts, especially when more than one Simulator is booted. Use booted for a single interactive device.
Does every MCP screenshot server return image bytes?
No. Some write a file only, while others return bytes or metadata. Check the server’s tool schema and output behavior.
Can ScreenshotNeo capture my local iOS Simulator?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures web URLs; use simctl through your MCP server for local Simulator images.
The Bottom Line
MCP makes the request convenient, but xcrun simctl io is the dependable capture primitive: verify it directly, target a specific UDID when necessary, and use an absolute writable path.
