Use your browser’s Save Page feature for a one-off offline copy, an HTTP GET plus an HTML parser for stable pages and selected fields, and a browser-rendering session when JavaScript creates the content you need. Preserve the URL, retrieval time, title, extracted values, and an original HTML, MHTML, or text copy so the result can be checked later.
Choose the capture method first

Before collecting anything automatically, check the site’s terms, robots directives, access controls, copyright rules, privacy obligations, and applicable law. Documentation describing a technical method does not grant permission to copy a particular site.
Save a webpage manually for offline use
Firefox
- Open the page and wait until the content you need is visible.
- Open the menu, choose Save Page As…, and select one of the available formats.
- Choose Web page, complete to save the HTML together with pictures and other page resources. Choose HTML only for a smaller, dependency-light copy, or Text files when formatting is unimportant.
- Open the saved file locally and verify that images, links, tables, and the relevant text are present.
A complete save is useful for a human-readable snapshot, but interactive controls, authenticated content, and resources blocked by the site may not work offline.
Chrome
- Open the page, then use the browser’s save-page command (or press Ctrl+S on Windows/Linux or Command+S on macOS).
- Select a complete page or HTML-only format when offered, choose a destination, and save.
- Open the local file and check the result before deleting the online reference.
For extension developers, Chrome’s pageCapture extension API can save a tab and its resources as an MHTML archive. MHTML is convenient as a single evidence file, but it is less convenient than parsed JSON or CSV for later data analysis.

Capture a static page with HTTP and an HTML parser
An HTTP GET requests a representation of a specified resource. If the server sends the information in the response HTML, you can save that response and extract only the fields you need without launching a browser.

Keep the raw response as well as the parsed output: if a selector later proves wrong, you can re-parse the original capture without requesting the site again.

Extract only the fields you need
Targeted extraction is more durable and easier to audit than copying an entire page into a spreadsheet. Inspect the DOM, identify a stable container, and then select its descendants.

Useful targets
- Headings:

meta[name="description"], Open Graph tags, canonical URLs, andtime[datetime]. - Repeated records: a card, row, list item, or table row as the outer selector, followed by fields inside each match.
- Attributes: image
src/alt, data attributes, product IDs, and tracking-free canonical links.
Save a schema with field names, the selector used, and whether a field was missing. A missing value is different from an empty string and from a selector that matched nothing; preserve that distinction for quality checks.
Capture content created by JavaScript
If the downloaded HTML lacks text that appears in a normal browser, the page is probably building its visible DOM after scripts execute or fetching data from an internal endpoint. First inspect the browser’s network requests and look for a documented or clearly identifiable data endpoint. If no suitable endpoint is available, use a headless browser or a rendering service. Cloudflare describes this distinction directly: its /content endpoint navigates to a site and captures fully rendered HTML, including the head, after JavaScript execution.
Browser-rendering workflow
- Navigate to the URL.
- Wait for a reliable condition: a selector that signals the data is present, a bounded delay, or network idle.
- Read the rendered DOM and apply CSS selectors.
- Save the rendered HTML or extracted records together with the URL and timestamp.
- Close the browser context and rate-limit later requests.
Waiting for a fixed number of seconds is simple but fragile. A selector wait is usually more precise; network-idle waits can still hang on pages with analytics or streaming connections, so impose a maximum timeout.
When a browser is not enough
Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, login requirements, geolocation, consent dialogs, and content inside closed shadow roots or cross-origin frames can prevent an ordinary capture. Do not attempt to bypass an access control that you are not authorized to bypass. Ask the site owner for an export or API when the page is protected.

Preserve evidence and make captures repeatable
For every capture, store:
- Original URL and any query parameters.
- UTC retrieval time.
- Page title and, when relevant, HTTP status and content type.
- Raw HTML, MHTML, Markdown, screenshot, or PDF when practical.
- Extracted fields, selector names, and a versioned schema.
- Notes about cookies, login state, viewport, locale, timezone, and geolocation.
Use deterministic filenames such as 2026-09-29T14-30-00Z_example-products.html. Hashing the raw file lets you detect whether two captures are identical. For recurring jobs, record failures separately from empty results and alert when a selector suddenly matches zero elements.

The saved page is blank or missing text
Check whether the text appears only after JavaScript runs. If so, switch from HTTP parsing to a rendered browser workflow or ScreenshotNeo. Also check redirects, authentication, consent dialogs, and whether the content is inside an iframe.

HTTP returns 403 or a bot-check page
Verify that automated access is permitted, use an honest user agent, slow the request rate, and prefer an official API or export. Do not treat a CAPTCHA as a parsing error or try to defeat it without authorization.
A selector returns no records
Inspect the live DOM rather than the visual layout, confirm spelling and case, and test the selector against the raw or rendered HTML you actually saved. A redesign may have changed class names; use stable attributes or a semantic container where possible.
Images or styles do not appear offline
Use a complete browser save, verify that resource files were created beside the HTML, or capture a screenshot/PDF. Resources requiring authentication, blocked by CORS, or loaded from short-lived URLs may not be portable.
The browser job times out
Replace an indefinite network-idle wait with a selector wait plus a maximum timeout, block unnecessary third-party resources, and capture one URL at a time while diagnosing. Record a timeout as a failed capture, not as an empty page.
