Urlbox can render a webpage URL as a PDF through its API, a render link, or its command-line interface. For Indian government pages, first verify that the address belongs to the intended department, choose a normal page-sized PDF or a single long page, then inspect the downloaded file for missing content and awkward layout. A rendered PDF is a visual copy; it does not by itself prove that the page or PDF is authentic, complete, or accessible.
Verify the government page before capturing it
Start with the department’s own website or contact details and confirm that the destination is the page you intend to preserve. The Guidelines for Indian Government Websites and apps (GIGW) says that “The URL or the Web Address of any Government website is a strong indicator of its authenticity and status as being official.” GIGW identifies gov.in and nic.in as indicators of government-site authenticity; some eligible academic institutions use edu.in, res.in, or ac.in. These are indicators, not proof that a particular address or a PDF is genuine. See the GIGW guidelines.
Choose a Urlbox capture method
Urlbox documents three practical options. A render link is convenient for an occasional capture; its JSON API suits a repeatable or automated workflow; the official CLI is useful when you want to run a capture from a local command line. Keep the project secret used for API authentication private: do not put it in browser-side JavaScript or a publicly accessible page. The returned render URL is temporary and expires after 30 days, according to the quickstart.
- JSON API: supports synchronous and asynchronous requests and creates a fresh render rather than using the render-link cache.
- CLI: offers a concise command for PDF output and can save the result to a local path.
The methods guide says render links are cached for 30 days, while API requests are not cached and generate a fresh render. Avoid embedding render links in HTML if each page view could trigger a new render. If you need to keep a file beyond the temporary render URL’s lifetime, download it or use configured storage.

Set PDF output and decide how the page should fit
Urlbox lists PDF as an output format. Its options guide describes full_page as an attempt to place the entire scrollable website on one PDF page. That can help when you need one continuous long sheet, but it is not the same as a conventional document divided into paper-sized pages. Cookie banners can crop full-page captures; Urlbox documents cookie-banner controls to address that issue. These settings do not guarantee ideal pagination or faithful rendering on every site.
- Use ordinary page-sized output when the PDF is meant to be printed or read as a conventional document.
- Enable full-page capture when one long sheet is more useful than page breaks, and inspect the result at a readable zoom.
- For an Indian government page intended for printing, check the result against GIGW checkpoint 20: “Content of the web page prints correctly on an A4 size paper”. GIGW says developers should test font properties so content prints correctly on A4.
Urlbox’s CLI documentation describes urlbox pdf <url> as PDF plus full-page capture, and includes a pdf-a4 preset. The following command shape uses the documented CLI capabilities; consult its current CLI instructions for installation and authentication setup:
urlbox pdf https://www.example.gov.in/path/to/page --output ./government-page.pdfReplace the example address with the verified page URL. The CLI documentation supports saving output to a path; confirm the precise option spelling for your installed CLI version in its current help or documentation before running it.

Review and retain the resulting PDF
- Open the PDF and confirm the page title, department identity, dates, headings, tables, footnotes, and other details you need are present.
- Check page breaks, margins, text size, images, and reading order. A full-page capture may be very long; a conventional page layout may split a table or sidebar across pages.
- For a form or interactive page, remember that a PDF render does not preserve the page’s interaction. Follow the original site’s instructions for submitting forms or verifying current information.
- Save the PDF itself to durable storage if you need it after the temporary render URL expires. A render URL is not a long-term archive.
GIGW cautions that complex layouts, graphics, tables, footnotes, sidebars, or form fields may not convert to tagged PDF in the correct reading order. A visually rendered Urlbox PDF should not be described as accessible or tagged unless that has been checked independently. The cited Urlbox documentation establishes its rendering options, not successful capture of every Indian government site.
