To capture image or video results in a Google Search screenshot, run your query, wait until the feature you need is visible, then capture the screen. Use your device’s screenshot control for the visible viewport; use Chrome DevTools when you need a selected area or a full-page image. Google’s result layout varies, so check the saved image to make sure it shows the query and the intended module.

Capture image or video results in the visible screen

  1. Open Google Search and run the query you want to document.
  2. Wait for the results page to render. Confirm the image box, video box, or carousel you need is actually visible; Google does not show the same features for every query.
  3. Use your computer or mobile device’s standard screenshot control to capture the current screen. The exact controls vary by device and operating system.
  4. Open the saved file and verify that the query and the relevant image or video results are legible. If context matters, make sure the screenshot also shows enough surrounding page to explain what you captured.

This viewport method is simplest when the relevant content fits on screen. Search features and available filters can vary with the query, result type, language, and sign-in context; see Google Search Help on narrowing results with filters.

Capture an area or the whole page in Chrome

Chrome DevTools provides screenshot actions through its Command Menu. The names available can depend on the installed Chrome version, so search the menu rather than relying on a fixed menu location.

  1. Open the Google results page in Chrome and open DevTools.
  2. Focus DevTools and open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+P on macOS.
  3. Type screenshot. Choose the capture action offered for your need. Chrome’s documentation describes Capture area screenshot; Chrome DevTools release notes also document full-page screenshot support. If the label differs, use the closest available command and check the output.
  4. Save the image, then inspect it at normal size. Check that it includes the query and the intended results, and that no relevant content was cut off.

See Chrome’s Command Menu documentation and the Chrome 89 DevTools release notes for the documented workflows.

Use Chrome Headless for a repeatable capture

For a technical or automated workflow, Chrome Headless documents a command-line --screenshot option and window sizing. The documented sizing controls the viewport; do not assume that this alone captures the entire document. Consult the Chrome Headless command-line reference for current syntax and options.

Capture the whole Google results page without losing context

A full-page image can include results that are below the initial viewport, but it may be less readable when reduced to a single image. Before using it, check that the target image or video module remains clear and that the query is included. If the purpose is to show only a particular feature, an area capture may produce a more legible record while retaining the necessary surrounding context.

Keep the original screenshot unchanged. Record the query, capture date and time, browser and device, viewport or display dimensions, and any relevant location or sign-in context. If you later crop or annotate a copy, distinguish that edited version from the original. A screenshot records the rendered view at capture time; by itself, it does not establish what every other person saw.

Why the same query may not produce the same screenshot

Google may show image or video boxes and carousels alongside web results, but their appearance is conditional. Search includes multiple visual result types, and available filters or tools can vary by query, result type, language, and account status. Check the live results page rather than assuming a particular layout. Google’s policies for image and video boxes describe those features, and its visual elements gallery shows the range of visual elements that can appear in Search.

Use screenshots responsibly

Google’s Brand Resource Center says third-party content-owner approvals are the user’s responsibility. Its Search guidelines state that Google permission is not needed for screenshots of Search pages or results printed for educational or instructional purposes. That limited statement is not a universal license for every medium, commercial use, jurisdiction, or image or video shown in results. Google also instructs users: “Don’t modify the interface.” Read the full Google Search guidelines and consider permissions for third-party material in your intended use.
