Use PNG and explicitly enable transparency. In Playwright, set type: 'png' and omitBackground: true; for a single component, capture a locator instead of the whole page. If the output is still white, remove any CSS background painted by the page itself—omitBackground only removes the browser’s default background.
What “no background” means
A transparent PNG contains an alpha channel: pixels outside the artwork are transparent rather than white. JPEG cannot store that transparency. A browser screenshot can therefore be transparent only when you request PNG output and suppress the browser’s default page background.
There are two different backgrounds to check:
- Browser default: Playwright can hide it with
omitBackground: true. - Page CSS: an explicit
background-color: whiteonhtml,body, or your component is intentional page painting and remains opaque until you change or remove it.
Playwright: capture a transparent page
Playwright renders the page in a real browser, so the result reflects browser layout, fonts, CSS, and loaded images. Install it and its browser binaries, then run this Node.js script:

})();fullPage: true expands the capture to the page’s complete scrollable height. Remove it (or set it to false) for only the current viewport. The screenshot API can also return a buffer if you want to upload the image instead of writing a file.

Make the document itself transparent
If the site sets an opaque color, override it before capture:

});Apply this only when removing the site’s background is correct for your use case. A white card, hero section, or other element with its own background will stay opaque by design.
Capture one HTML element with transparency
For a logo, card, chart, or other component, use locator.screenshot(). This avoids capturing unrelated page content and automatically uses the element’s bounding box.

})();If the selector’s element has background-color, that color is part of the component and will be captured. Set the component’s background to transparent in CSS when you need a cutout.

Useful selector and page controls
- Use a stable ID or data attribute, such as
[data-testid="product-card"], rather than a fragile generated class. - Wait for fonts, images, or a loading marker before taking the shot so the element’s final dimensions are used.
- Use
page.screenshotfor viewport or full-page output andlocator.screenshotfor one element. - PNG is required for alpha transparency; changing only
omitBackgroundcannot make a JPEG transparent.
Browser-only option: html2canvas
html2canvas runs inside the page and reconstructs the selected DOM in a canvas. It is convenient when you cannot run a separate browser automation process, but its rendering can differ from the browser’s pixels and it is subject to browser security rules.

Command-line alternative: shot-scraper
shot-scraper exposes the same browser concept as a CLI. Its documented transparent-capture flag is --omit-background:

Why a transparent screenshot turns white
Wrong file format or option
Confirm that the output is PNG and that omitBackground: true is present. Playwright’s default for omitBackground is false; omitting it leaves the default background in place. Transparency is not available in JPEG.
An explicit CSS background remains
Inspect html, body, and the target element in developer tools. Replace an intentional white declaration with background: transparent or inject an override before the screenshot. Do not remove a background that is part of the design accidentally.
The wrong area was captured
A viewport screenshot cannot include content below the fold. Use fullPage: true for the complete scrollable document, or select the exact component with a locator.

html2canvas images are missing
Set useCORS: true, ensure the remote image host returns permissive CORS headers, and confirm that images are reachable without authentication barriers. If the host cannot provide CORS, proxy the asset through a server you control or use browser automation instead.
The output looks soft
For html2canvas, raise scale, commonly to window.devicePixelRatio. Remember that larger pixel dimensions consume more memory and produce larger files.

Wait for a selector, image completion, a known loading state, or a deliberate delay. For Playwright, waiting for the target locator before locator.screenshot() prevents empty or incorrectly sized captures.
Reliability and performance checklist
- Pin your Playwright, browser, html2canvas, or shot-scraper versions in production and recheck options after upgrades.
- Set a navigation and screenshot timeout appropriate to your pages; very long pages and high-DPI captures require more memory.
- Close the browser in a
finallyblock in production code so failures do not leak processes. - Use element capture whenever a component is all you need; it is faster and creates smaller files than a full-page image.
- Wait for network-dependent content, but avoid an unnecessarily long fixed delay when a reliable selector or readiness signal exists.
- Validate the PNG by opening it over a contrasting checkerboard or colored background; white-looking artwork may be opaque even when the outer pixels are transparent.
