For a clear website screenshot, first choose what to capture: the visible viewport, the full page, or one element. Then make sure the page is in the intended state, set the output scale and format for its use, and keep the browser environment consistent if you are comparing images. A browser’s built-in tools are usually simplest for one-off captures; Playwright or Puppeteer suit repeatable, scripted work.
Choose what the screenshot needs to show
The capture boundary matters more than adding pixels. A high-resolution image of the wrong area, or of a page before it has finished loading, is still a poor screenshot.
- Viewport: Captures what a person sees at one screen size. Use it for a bug report, a design review of an above-the-fold layout, or a record of a particular responsive breakpoint.
- Full page: Captures content below the fold as well as the initial viewport. Use it for documentation or a broad visual record of a page.
- Element: Captures a specific component, such as a dialog, form, chart, or navigation bar. Use it when the surrounding page would distract from the subject.
For a single manual capture, Firefox DevTools supports full-page screenshots and screenshots of inspected elements. Playwright documents viewport, full-page, and element screenshot workflows in its screenshot guide.
Take a one-off screenshot in a browser
Firefox DevTools: full page or one element
- Open Firefox DevTools and its toolbox settings.
- Enable the “Take a screenshot of the entire page” toolbox button.
- Use the screenshot button to capture the full page. Firefox saves the image in Downloads.
- To capture one element instead, open the Inspector, right-click the element, and choose “Screenshot Node.”
Firefox’s Taking screenshots documentation also describes a Web Console :screenshot helper. Its options include --fullpage, --selector, --delay, --dpr, and --filename. Use a selector when you need one part of the page, a delay when a transient state needs time to appear, and a device-pixel ratio option when you need to control pixel density. These options do not make a page reach a desired state automatically; the page and its content must still be ready to capture.

Chrome and other browsers
Browser tools and labels vary by browser and release. If you only need one image, check the browser’s current developer tools for a screenshot command before installing a separate tool. If you need the same capture repeatedly, a scriptable browser workflow gives you more control over the sequence and parameters.
Automate repeatable captures with Playwright
Playwright’s page screenshot API can save a screenshot to a file and can capture a full page or a selected element. The following Node.js example uses Chromium, opens a page, waits for it to load, and saves a full-page PNG:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'website.png', fullPage: true, type: 'png' });
await browser.close();
})();
Replace https://example.com with the page you are authorized to capture. For a viewport image, omit fullPage: true. For one element, locate it and use its screenshot method:

- FAST SPEEDS - Scans color and black and white documents a blazing speed up to 16ppm (1). Color scanning won’t slow you down as the color scan speed is the same as the black and white scan speed.
- ULTRA COMPACT – At less than 1 foot in length and only about 1. 5lbs in weight you can fit this device virtually anywhere (a bag, a purse, even a pocket).
- READY WHENEVER YOU ARE – The DS-640 mobile scanner is powered via an included micro USB 3. 0 cable allowing you to use it even where there is no outlet available. Plug it into you PC or laptop and you are ready to scan.
- WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
const panel = page.locator('.target-panel');
await panel.screenshot({ path: 'panel.png', type: 'png' });
Choose a selector that identifies the intended element reliably. A selector that matches nothing, or matches the wrong component after a site redesign, can cause a failure or an unhelpful image.

Set format and scale deliberately
Playwright’s page API supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshots, plus a scale option. With scale: 'css', the output uses one image pixel per CSS pixel. With scale: 'device', it uses one image pixel per device pixel; a high-DPI device can therefore produce an image twice as large or larger. The API reference says device scale is the default. Use CSS scale when compact output or CSS-pixel geometry matters; use device scale when fine detail and the larger output are useful.
For Playwright, the screenshot quality setting ranges from 0 to 100 and does not apply to PNG. The documented JPEG default is 80; WebP quality 100 is lossless. These are Playwright API behaviors, not universal settings for every capture tool. PNG is a lossless choice when its file size is acceptable. JPEG or WebP may be preferable when the destination benefits from compression.

- STAY ORGANIZED – Easily convert your paper documents into digital formats like searchable PDF files, JPEGs, and more.Power Consumption : 2.5W or less (Energy Saving Mode: 0.7W). Suggested Daily Volume : 500 scans..Does it contain liquid: no
- CONVENIENT AND PORTABLE –lightweight and small in size, you can take the scanner anywhere from home offices, classrooms, remote offices, and anywhere in between
- HANDLES VARIOUS MEDIA TYPES – Digitize receipts, business cards, plastic or embossed cards, reports, legal documents, and more
- FAST AND EFFICIENT – No technical hurdles or complicated setups here; easily scan both sides of a document at the same time, in color or black-and-white, at up to 12 pages-per-minute, and with a 20 sheet automatic feeder
- BROAD COMPATIBILITY – Works with both Windows and Mac devices, be it laptop or computer
Playwright documents these parameters in its Page API reference. Changing scale can increase pixel dimensions and file size, but it cannot fix bad framing, missing content, or a page captured before it is ready.
Capture a specific page state
For a menu, hover state, animation, or other transient content, arrange the page state before the screenshot call. A delay can help when an element appears after a known interval; a selector wait can be more reliable when the page has a clear readiness condition. Network idle may be useful for pages that finish their requests, but continuously active pages may never reach it.
Playwright’s screenshot options include a stylesheet option that can hide dynamic elements or change properties for a more repeatable image. Treat that as a way to control presentation, not a guarantee that all page content has loaded. Lazy-loaded images and other content may need scrolling, a targeted wait, or a deliberate delay. Decide whether the screenshot should show animations, banners, or overlays; do not hide them if they are part of the issue you are documenting.
Why website screenshots look different on different computers
Different capture environments can render a page differently. Playwright’s visual-comparison guide warns that browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. It advises running tests in the same environment used to generate the baseline screenshot. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.

For comparisons, keep the following as stable as practical and record them with the image:
- Browser and browser version.
- Operating system and relevant browser settings.
- Viewport width and height.
- Device scale or output scale.
- Page state, including waits, cookies, and whether dynamic content is hidden.
- Whether the browser is headless or headed, and any relevant hardware or power conditions.
If two screenshots differ, check these conditions before concluding that the website itself changed. A capture from another machine may be useful for communication without being suitable as a pixel-for-pixel visual baseline.
When a script is worth the setup
Playwright and Puppeteer both support programmable browser workflows. Playwright’s screenshot API documents capture extent, output format, quality, scale, and clipping; its screenshot guide includes element capture. Puppeteer is a JavaScript library for automating Chrome and Firefox, with screenshot and PDF generation APIs described by Chrome for Developers.

Automation is a good fit when a team needs repeatable captures, many URLs, a fixed viewport, or screenshots integrated into tests. It requires installing and maintaining the automation environment, and a script still needs to handle navigation, readiness, selectors, and state. For an occasional screenshot, built-in browser tools are usually quicker. No particular user page or workflow is guaranteed to behave the same way across these options.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common screenshot problems
The screenshot is blank or missing part of the page
- Cause: The page had not rendered, navigation failed, or content was still loading.
- Fix: Confirm the URL loads in a browser. In an automation script, wait for an appropriate condition, such as a specific element, rather than assuming that navigation alone means the page is ready.
The full-page image is too long or the layout is awkward
- Cause: Full-page capture includes content beyond the initial viewport, and a long page may not make a useful single image.
- Fix: Capture the viewport or a relevant element instead if the whole document is not necessary. Check that lazy-loaded content is present before capture.
The image is blurry or much larger than expected
- Cause: Output scale and format affect pixel dimensions and file size. A device-scale screenshot can be substantially larger than a CSS-scale one.
- Fix: Choose the scale for the intended use, and verify the output format and dimensions. More pixels help preserve detail, but they do not repair an incorrectly sized viewport.
The selected element cannot be captured
- Cause: The selector is incorrect, matches no element, or the element has not appeared yet.
- Fix: Inspect the page to confirm the selector and wait for the target before taking its screenshot.
Two comparison screenshots do not match
- Cause: Browser, operating system, viewport, scale, page state, or headless mode differs.
- Fix: Standardize and record the environment and capture settings before investigating the page as the source of the difference.
A practical checklist before you capture
- Choose viewport, full page, or one element to match the purpose.
- Confirm the page is loaded and in the intended visual state.
- Pick a format and scale that balance fidelity with output size.
- For repeated comparisons, keep the browser environment and capture conditions consistent.
- Open the saved image and verify its framing, legibility, and completeness.
