To document Google News visibility, record the exact query, filters, Google surface, capture time and viewing context, then save an unedited screenshot of the results you observed. Treat it as evidence of one view—not proof of a publisher’s general ranking or what every user saw.
Choose the Google surface you are researching
Decide whether you are examining results on Google News or news placements in Google Search. Google News is a separate service; Google Search presents news in places such as Top stories and the News tab. Label each capture with the surface it shows rather than combining them as if they were one results page. Google News Initiative explains the distinction and the contextual variation in Search news placements.
Run a reproducible Google News search
- Choose a query. Search for the topic, place or publisher whose visibility you want to inspect.
- Apply relevant controls. Google News search controls can narrow results by exact phrase, included or excluded terms, date range, or publisher, where available. Google News Help describes how to find and narrow results.
- Log the settings. Save the exact query and every active filter or date range before capturing. For a comparison, keep these constant unless changing one is the purpose of the comparison.
- Capture the page state. Use the screenshot function already available on your computer or phone. Include enough of the page to identify the results being discussed, and do not edit the result text or order in the evidence copy.
- Preserve the original. Keep an unaltered file. If you crop or annotate a copy for a report, retain the original and identify the edited version as a derivative.
Record context that can change what appears
Save a short capture log beside each image. Google describes selection and presentation as potentially affected by factors including query, language, region, device, settings and past activity; some Google News areas are personalized. Google News Help covers search controls, and Google explains how stories are selected.

- Device, browser and viewport
- Whether you were signed in
For a comparison, state which conditions you held constant and which you changed—for example, region or sign-in state. This makes the comparison interpretable without implying that the screenshot represents all users.

Check the publisher page before drawing SEO conclusions
A date displayed in a results interface is not conclusive evidence that a publisher updated an article. Open the publisher’s page and compare its visible headline and publication or update date with the page’s structured data, including datePublished and dateModified when available. Google recommends a clear visible date and accurate date markup, with the correct timezone; its News guidance also cautions against artificially freshening stories without significant new information. When a headline or date looks inconsistent, compare the visible article heading with the page title and inspect whether article content is accessible to crawlers. Publisher guidance also recommends consistent mobile and desktop redirects. These checks help distinguish a result presentation from a publisher-page or metadata issue.

Compare captures without overstating the result
Use the same query and filters when testing changes in visibility. Compare captures across the dimensions you deliberately chose—time, Google surface, language or region, device or viewport, and sign-in or personalization context—and document those changes. Google notes that Search Top stories can vary with query, device, location and other factors, while some Google News areas are personalized. A screenshot establishes what appeared in that recorded context and when; by itself, it does not establish consistent visibility, a general ranking, or what another user saw. Use screenshots responsibly
Google’s Brand Resource Center says: “You don’t need to ask permission to use screenshots of the Google Search page and search results pages in print for educational or instructional purposes.” That statement is specifically about print use of Google Search screenshots for educational or instructional purposes. It is not blanket permission for every Google News screenshot use: Google also restricts certain promotional print formats and requires approval for Google Search use in advertisements. It does not settle copyright or privacy questions in every jurisdiction. Review Google’s Search Guidelines for the scope and restrictions.
