For a one-off image, open the map and take an operating-system screenshot of the map area. For repeatable, automated images without browser controls, use Google Maps Platform’s Maps Static API: it returns a map image from an HTTP request. Keep Google’s logo and attribution visible, and check the usage rules before saving or publishing the result.
Choose a method for the image you need

Take a one-off screenshot without browser controls
- Open Google Maps and set the location, zoom, and map view you want.
- Hide or minimize browser chrome if practical, while keeping the map’s Google logo and copyright notices visible.
- Use your operating system’s region-capture tool to select the map area, or use a full-screen screenshot and crop only the surrounding browser interface—not the map attribution.
- Save the image in the format your presentation or document accepts.
Google’s Geo Guidelines explicitly give capturing a screenshot from Google Maps as an example of adding custom labels or graphics. A screenshot is a practical one-off capture, not a way to bypass Google’s terms or a license to remove attribution or redistribute map data. Generate a map image with the Maps Static API
The Maps Static API is Google’s documented programmatic option when you want an image response rather than a browser-rendered interactive map. Google describes it as returning “an image (either GIF, PNG or JPEG) in response to an HTTP request.” The request’s parameters can specify the location, dimensions, zoom, map type, markers, paths, and styling. Set up access first
- Choose or create a Google Cloud project.
- Enable the Maps Static API for that project.
- Create an API key and configure it according to Google’s key-security guidance.
- Enable billing on the project. Google’s setup guide lists both an API key and enabled billing as prerequisites.
Follow Google’s Maps Static API setup guide for the current Cloud Console steps and API-key configuration. Do not expose an unrestricted key in a public page or source repository.

Request the image directly
A Static API request is an image URL. For example, the basic shape is:
https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/staticmap?center=Brooklyn+Bridge,New+York&zoom=13&size=600x400&key=YOUR_API_KEY
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with a key configured for the project. The URL above illustrates the request structure; use the documented parameters and current Google Cloud configuration for your application. You can use the request as an image source in HTML:

In an HTML attribute, ampersands are written as &. If building the URL in code, URL-encode parameter values rather than concatenating unescaped addresses or labels. Consult the Maps Static API guide for the complete parameter reference and supported options.
Choose parameters to fit the use
- Location and zoom: set the center and zoom for the area in view.
- Size: choose the image dimensions for its intended display. Check Google’s documentation for size constraints and any applicable scale options.
- Map type: select a supported map presentation, such as road map or satellite, where appropriate.
- Markers and paths: add location markers or route-like lines using the documented parameters.
- Styling: apply supported styles when you need a visual treatment consistent with your page.
Static images are not interactive maps. If users need to pan, zoom, or explore map data, use an appropriate interactive Maps Platform product instead of treating a static image as its substitute.
Use My Maps or Google Earth for custom graphics
If annotation is the main goal, consider a tool designed for it rather than editing a plain screenshot. Google says My Maps can draw lines and shapes on a Google map. Its Geo Guidelines also identify exporting an image from Google Earth or Earth Studio, or taking a Google Maps screenshot, as options for adding custom labels or graphics. The right choice depends on whether you need editable layers, a designed image, or simply a captured view. Check the rules and attribution requirements for the specific product and publishing context.

Keep attribution and follow Google’s image rules
- Keep attribution visible. Do not crop out the Google logo or copyright notices. Google’s Maps JavaScript policy also requires a Google logo with proper attribution when Maps JavaScript results are displayed without a map.
- Do not host a copied Static API image as your own map image. Google’s FAQ says, “You may not store and serve copies of images generated using the Maps Static API from your website.” It says static images must link directly to the Maps Static API so Google serves the image to end users. Read the Google Maps Platform FAQ.
- Do not scrape undocumented interfaces or alter tiles server-side. The Maps API terms prohibit access through undocumented interfaces and server-side modification of map tiles.
- Do not stitch images into a larger map outside the documented allowance. The terms restrict stitching multiple static images into a map larger than permitted by the documentation.
- Do not export or save map content outside the service unless expressly permitted. Review the Google Maps Platform Terms for the applicable restrictions.
- If you display Maps JavaScript results outside a map, comply with the API policy. Applications using that API also need publicly accessible terms of use and a privacy policy incorporating Google’s terms and privacy policy. See the Maps JavaScript API policies.
Google’s Additional Terms permit viewing and annotating maps, creating KML files and map layers, and publicly displaying content with proper attribution online, in video, and in print, subject to the terms. A screenshot or Static API response does not remove those conditions.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The Static API request fails or does not return the expected map
- Check the API key and project. Confirm the key belongs to the project where Maps Static API is enabled, and that the project has billing enabled.
- Check key restrictions. A key restricted for a different application or source may not authorize the request type you are making. Configure restrictions for the actual deployment and follow Google’s key guidance.
- Check encoding and parameter values. Encode spaces and special characters in addresses, labels, and paths. Compare each parameter against the official Static API documentation.
- Inspect the HTTP response and image. Do not assume a URL is valid simply because it can be placed in an
imgtag. Check the returned response and Google’s error guidance to identify authorization or request problems.
The screenshot looks cropped or attribution is missing
- Capture a larger region or use a full-screen screenshot, then crop browser controls without trimming the map’s notices.
- With the Static API, adjust the documented size, center, and zoom parameters rather than enlarging or stitching images beyond Google’s terms.
The saved image is stale or cannot be served from your site
For Static API output, Google’s FAQ specifically says not to store and serve copies from your website; use a direct API image request so Google serves the image to the end user. If the need is a retained graphic or custom design, check whether Google Earth, Earth Studio, or another expressly permitted workflow fits the intended publication.

Can I create a Google map image without JavaScript?
Yes. The Maps Static API returns an image from an HTTP request, so it does not require rendering an interactive browser map with the Maps JavaScript API. You still need to follow the Static API setup, billing, attribution, and usage requirements.
Can I remove the Google logo from the image?
No. Keep Google’s logo and copyright notices visible and comply with the attribution rules that apply to the product and use.
Can I use a screenshot in a presentation or publication?
