To capture a webpage beyond the visible screen, use Chrome or Firefox developer tools for a one-off image, or Playwright for a repeatable scripted capture. In Playwright, the key option is fullPage: true. Whichever route you choose, check the saved image: capturing the whole page does not by itself guarantee that dynamic content has finished loading or that the page is in the state your documentation needs.
What a full-page screenshot captures
A full-page screenshot includes the page’s scrollable content beyond the current viewport. It differs from a regular screenshot, which shows only the area visible on screen. Playwright describes its full-page result as an image of the page as if it fit on one very tall screen (Playwright screenshot documentation).
For technical documentation, the goal is not simply to produce a tall image. The image should contain the relevant content and show the intended page state. A capture command defines the capture area; it does not prove that every element has loaded or that the page has settled into a representative state.
Capture a full page in Chrome DevTools
- Open the page you want to document in Chrome, then open DevTools.
- Open Device Mode if it is not already active.
- Open the Device Mode More options menu and choose Capture a full size screenshot.
- Open the saved image and check that it includes the content you need and reflects the intended page state before adding it to your documentation.
Chrome’s documentation describes this option as capturing the whole page, including content outside the viewport (Chrome DevTools Device Mode). The documentation may not reflect every current Chrome menu label, so check the options in your installed version if the wording differs.

Capture a full page in Firefox DevTools
- Open DevTools Settings.
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Select the screenshot icon. Firefox documents that the image is saved in the browser’s Downloads directory.
- Review the saved file at a readable zoom and confirm the expected content and page state.
Firefox’s DevTools guide also documents taking a screenshot of a selected element: in the Inspector’s HTML pane, right-click the node and choose Screenshot Node (Firefox screenshot documentation).
Firefox also documents a Web Console command for a full-page capture:

Automate full-page screenshots with Playwright
Playwright is useful when you need to repeat captures from a script. Its screenshot API accepts fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page. Here is a complete Node.js example that opens a page, captures it, and closes the browser:

Replace https://example.com with the target page. The capture call follows Playwright’s documented API (Playwright screenshots).
Choose a readiness condition deliberately
The example uses waitUntil: 'networkidle' before capture, but no single wait condition guarantees the correct visual state on every site. A page may load content after network activity settles, or keep background requests active. For pages with a known landmark, wait for the relevant selector instead; for a predictable interface animation or delayed widget, a deliberate delay may be more appropriate. Then inspect the image rather than treating a completed command as proof that the page is ready.

Capture only an element when that is the documentation target
If the guide needs one component rather than the entire document, use Firefox’s Inspector node screenshot workflow described above. Chrome DevTools also documents node screenshots in its Device Mode guide. Choose the element capture when surrounding page content would make the image harder to read.
Choose the method that fits the workflow

For recurring documentation work, scripting makes the capture steps repeatable, but the saved image still needs review. For a one-off capture, DevTools avoids setting up a script. Select based on whether you need a whole page or a specific element and whether the capture needs to be repeated.

- Confirm the output is a full-page image, not only a screenshot of the current viewport.
- Check that the relevant content is present and the page shows the intended state.
- If layout fidelity matters, record the browser and any relevant viewport or page-state settings as a team convention. There is no universal documentation standard for which conditions to record.
- Keep the original capture available if you annotate or edit an image, so it remains distinguishable from a modified illustration.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The image shows only the visible screen
Use the browser’s full-size or entire-page option, or in Playwright set fullPage: true. A standard viewport screenshot does not include the page’s off-screen content.

Content is missing or appears in the wrong state
The page may not have finished loading the relevant content when the capture ran, or it may require an interaction first. Wait for a known selector or an appropriate page condition, and reproduce any necessary interaction before capturing. Inspect the resulting image to verify the state.
The menu option is not where expected
Check that Device Mode is open in Chrome, or enable Firefox’s screenshot toolbar button in DevTools Settings. Menu placement and exact labels can vary with browser versions; use the relevant browser’s current interface if it differs from the documented wording.
The image is too tall or hard to review
Consider whether the documentation needs the entire page or just one component. For a component-focused explanation, capture the selected node rather than including unrelated page content. For a full-page guide, review at a readable zoom and consider whether the content should be shown in more than one image.
