To capture a whole webpage with a Playwright-based AI agent, navigate to the page and take a screenshot with fullPage: true. In Playwright MCP, pass the same option to browser_take_screenshot; from the Playwright CLI, use screenshot --full-page. Choose the interface your workflow already uses, and provide an accessibility snapshot as well if the next step needs to understand or operate page elements.
Choose the capture method that fits your agent
A regular screenshot contains the current browser viewport. A full-page screenshot captures the page’s full scrollable content. Playwright documents this behavior for its Page API and MCP screenshot tool: Playwright screenshots and Playwright MCP documentation.

The methods are different integration surfaces, not a documented performance ranking. For most agent workflows, prefer the interface already available to your code or agent.

After creating a Playwright page in your existing browser setup, navigate to the target and set fullPage to true:

Capture through Playwright MCP
If your agent is connected to Playwright MCP, use its browser_take_screenshot tool and set fullPage to true. The tool supports naming an output file and documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. Follow the tool’s input schema for your installed version; the conceptual call is:
browser_take_screenshot({ fullPage: true })MCP tool calls are issued by the agent host, so this is an example of the option to pass, not a standalone JavaScript function to run in Node. Consult the Playwright MCP documentation for the current tool schema and available parameters.
Use the Playwright CLI
For command-line workflows, use the CLI screenshot command with its full-page option. The general form is:
playwright screenshot --full-page https://example.com page.pngCheck Playwright’s CLI documentation for the current command syntax in your installed version. The CLI also offers --hires for device-pixel output. Its documentation warns that high-resolution image pixels no longer correspond one-to-one with the CSS-pixel coordinates used by mouse commands. If an agent will use screenshot coordinates to click, account for that difference rather than treating image coordinates as CSS coordinates.

Wait for the right page state before capture
A full-page option determines how much of the page is captured; it does not decide when the page is ready. Choose a readiness condition that matches the task—for example, whether the content or visual state being inspected has appeared—before requesting the screenshot. There is no universal delay established for every site in the documentation cited here, so avoid assuming one fixed wait works for dynamic pages.
- For visual review, wait until the relevant layout and content are visible.
- For lazy-loaded sections, make sure the content you need has loaded before capturing; the exact preparation depends on the page and workflow.
- For an interaction task, do not use the screenshot as the only source of element references. Pair it with page structure from an accessibility snapshot.
Give the agent the right output for its next task
Use the screenshot when the next step is visual: judging layout, inspecting a chart or canvas, or documenting a rendering bug. Use an accessibility snapshot or other structural page data when the agent needs text, element references, or to interact with controls. Playwright MCP explicitly distinguishes these roles: screenshots are for looking, while browser_snapshot provides references for interaction. See the MCP documentation.
A screenshot may show how a control looks, but it is not a reliable substitute for structured references when the agent needs to locate or operate that control.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The image shows only the visible viewport
Check that the full-page option is set on the screenshot call—not just on navigation. Use fullPage: true in the Page API or MCP tool, or --full-page in the CLI. Confirm the tool call is using the expected Playwright interface and current syntax.

Lower-page content is missing
The capture may have happened before that content appeared or loaded. Wait for a task-relevant readiness condition, then capture. A full-page option does not itself guarantee that a site’s delayed or lazy content has finished loading.
The screenshot looks correct, but the agent cannot click the right control
Provide an accessibility snapshot or other structural references for interaction. In Playwright MCP, use browser_snapshot for references rather than asking the agent to infer interaction targets from pixels alone.
Mouse coordinates do not line up with a high-resolution CLI screenshot
If you used --hires, remember that the image uses device pixels while mouse commands use CSS pixels, as the CLI documentation warns. Do not pass image-pixel coordinates directly as CSS-pixel coordinates.
A low-level Chrome DevTools Protocol example is unclear
The protocol includes Page.captureScreenshot, but parameter details can vary with the target browser protocol schema. Consult the schema for your browser version before implementing a specific full-page recipe; do not assume an unverified parameter is available.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The cited official documentation does not establish a universal capture-time, pixel-limit, or reliability figure for these approaches. Capture time and success can depend on the target page and how your workflow waits for it. For repeated jobs, choose a meaningful readiness condition and handle navigation or capture failures in your surrounding agent code; avoid promising a fixed completion time based on the full-page setting alone.
