For a one-off design review, use Chrome DevTools’ device toolbar and choose More options → Capture a full size screenshot. For repeat captures, use Playwright’s full-page screenshot option. A full-page image shows content below the fold, but it does not replace viewport-specific checks, text review, or accessibility inspection.
Capture a full page once in Chrome
- Open the mockup in Chrome and navigate to the page and state you want reviewed. Wait for the visible content to settle.
- Open DevTools and the device toolbar if you need to set a specific viewport or emulate a device. Chrome device mode supports custom dimensions and device-pixel-ratio settings. See Google Chrome for Developers’ device-mode guide.
- In the device toolbar, open More options and select Capture a full size screenshot. This captures content outside the visible viewport. The adjacent Capture screenshot command captures only the current viewport.
- Inspect the saved image before sharing. Confirm that it reaches the intended end of the page, uses the intended width, and is readable at the size reviewers will view it.
- Include useful review context, such as the mockup or variant name, viewport dimensions, and capture date.
Automate repeated captures with Playwright
Playwright can save a screenshot of the full scrollable page to a file. In JavaScript, after creating a page and navigating to the mockup, use:

Compare captures against a baseline
For visual regression reviews, Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() can create a reference image and compare later captures against it. Keep baseline creation and comparison in the same environment where possible: operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Playwright also documents using a stylesheet to filter volatile content when it makes comparisons unreliable. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

Use the CLI for full-page and high-resolution output
Playwright’s CLI includes screenshot --full-page for full-page capture and a --hires option for device-pixel resolution. In high-resolution mode, image coordinates are device pixels, not CSS pixels, so they do not map directly to the CSS-pixel coordinates used by mouse commands. Keep the scale information with the image if reviewers need to identify positions. See Playwright’s screenshot documentation.

Make design-review screenshots useful
Capture the widths the review actually covers
A full-page screenshot is a tall raster image, not proof that a design works responsively. If the review includes multiple layouts, capture the relevant viewport widths separately. Chrome device mode can set dimensions, and Playwright screenshots are configurable; neither documentation source prescribes a universal responsive-review protocol.

Keep comparisons stable
Animations, changing content, late-loading assets, and rendering-environment differences can make captures vary even when the design has not changed. For exact comparisons, keep browser and device settings stable, record them with the review, and consider filtering volatile content in Playwright.

Use screenshots to review visual layout. If reviewers need to verify wording, page structure, or accessible names, include text or accessibility inspection as well. Playwright’s guidance distinguishes those needs from visual screenshot review; see Playwright’s accessibility testing documentation.

Troubleshooting capture and comparison problems
- The image stops at the viewport: In Chrome, use Capture a full size screenshot, not Capture screenshot. In Playwright, set
fullPage: trueorfull_page=True. - The captured page does not show the intended state: Wait until the page content has reached the state for review before capturing; inspect the result rather than assuming the image validates the design.
- Two baseline comparisons differ unexpectedly: Check for animated or changing content and late-loading assets, then verify that the browser, operating system, settings, hardware, and headless mode match the baseline conditions.
- Coordinates do not match between an image and browser actions: If the CLI capture used
--hires, image positions are in device pixels rather than CSS pixels. Account for the scale before mapping positions. - The tall image is hard to read: View it at the scale reviewers will use and add viewport crops when detailed inspection is important.
