Use a browser automation tool such as Playwright to load the portfolio, bring its WebGL scene to the state you want, then capture the whole scrollable page with fullPage: true. A screenshot records one rendered moment—not an animation over time—so capture each important interactive or animated state separately.
Capture a WebGL portfolio with Playwright
Playwright’s full-page screenshot option captures the full scrollable page rather than just the visible viewport. Its screenshot API can save the image to a file or return image bytes for further processing. The page-specific work is reaching the right state and deciding when the canvas is ready; there is no universal WebGL-ready signal that works for every portfolio.
- Set up Playwright in your project and launch a browser using the runtime and installation steps in the Playwright screenshot documentation.
- Navigate to the portfolio and wait for the assets and scene to render. Use a readiness condition specific to the site, such as a known selector or an application-level signal, rather than assuming a fixed delay guarantees readiness.
- Perform the interactions needed to show the intended composition: click a control, scroll to a section, or move the pointer if the portfolio responds to those actions.
- Capture the page with
fullPage: true, then inspect the saved image for missing, blank, clipped, or duplicated content.

Also, networkidle can be unsuitable for pages that keep network connections open; choose a site-specific signal if navigation never reaches it.
Return bytes instead of writing a file
For image processing or visual comparison, omit path and retain the returned buffer. The Playwright screenshot guide documents both file output and buffer output.

A full-page screenshot is a still image of what the browser rendered at capture time; it does not preserve a WebGL animation as a video or sequence. If the portfolio changes with time or interaction, first reach the state you need, then take a separate screenshot for every state that matters. For a reproducible series, keep the viewport, device scale, interactions, and capture timing consistent.
Automation can interact with the page before capture, but overlays can interfere with those interactions. Playwright’s Page documentation notes that unexpected overlays may affect automated testing. Handle consent dialogs or other blocking UI in a way appropriate to the site before attempting the target interaction.

Inspect a WebGL frame when the screenshot looks wrong
If the page capture shows an unexpected canvas frame, Chrome DevTools Canvas Profiler can record and inspect canvas frames. Its documentation describes viewing the canvas state at the end of a selected frame and calls out WebGL draw calls such as clear(), drawArrays(), and drawElements(). Use it to investigate what the canvas rendered; it is separate from the full-page screenshot step.

Troubleshoot missing, blank, or inconsistent captures
- The canvas is blank: A visible canvas element is not proof that the scene is ready. Wait for a site-specific render or application signal, and check the page’s own loading errors before capturing.
- The screenshot has the wrong animation frame: A still captures only the instant requested. Establish the desired state through page interactions or timing, then capture again; use separate images for distinct states.
- A click or hover does not work: Check for consent dialogs, popups, or other overlays that block input. Resolve the relevant overlay before running the interaction, in accordance with the page’s behavior.
- The capture omits or repeats page content: Review the resulting image rather than assuming full-page mode guarantees correct rendering for every page construction. Try a site-specific readiness condition and inspect how the page lays out content while scrolling.
- Navigation or a wait hangs: A page may keep network activity open, making a network-idle condition unsuitable. Use a selector or other signal tied to the portfolio’s actual loaded state.
- The result differs across machines or runs: Browser version, operating system, viewport, device scale, page implementation, animation timing, and loading behavior can affect a capture. Keep the environment and capture steps consistent, then inspect the output.
