To capture a website’s sitemap as full-page screenshots, first fetch and parse its sitemap XML, follow any sitemap index to its child files, then visit each page URL with Puppeteer and save a screenshot with fullPage: true. Set the viewport before navigation, choose a readiness condition that fits the site, and log errors per URL so one failed page does not stop the batch.
How the sitemap-to-screenshot workflow works
A sitemap supplies URLs; Puppeteer renders those URLs in a browser. They are separate steps: extract every page URL from the sitemap files, then capture each rendered page. A sitemap may be a urlset containing page entries, or a sitemapindex listing other sitemap files. The XML protocol uses loc elements for these locations. Sitemap Protocol
- Fetch the sitemap (or use its published location).
- Parse its XML and collect each absolute page URL. If it is an index, fetch and parse each referenced sitemap too.
- Choose a viewport width and height, and set them before navigating.
- Visit each URL, wait for the page condition appropriate to the site, and save with
fullPage: true. - Record successes and errors against their URLs, then close the browser.
Fetch and parse a sitemap or sitemap index
The sitemap protocol requires UTF-8 and entity-escaped values. Use an XML parser rather than a regular expression; XML entities, namespaces, compression, and sitemap indexes can make tag matching brittle. The exact fetching and parsing implementation depends on whether the site publishes plain XML, a compressed file, a URL set, or an index. Google recommends fully qualified absolute URLs in sitemaps. Google Search Central: Build and submit a sitemap
For a URL set, collect each url/loc. For an index, collect each sitemap/loc, fetch those files, and then collect the page URLs from their URL sets. Validate locations before requesting them, especially if the input is not from a trusted site.

Google Search Central states that an individual sitemap is limited to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed, whichever limit is reached first; an index can contain up to 50,000 sitemap locations. These are separate limits, so a large site should divide URLs across sitemap files and use an index to organize them. Google Search Central: Large sitemaps
Capture each URL with Puppeteer
Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project with npm install puppeteer. Create the output directory before running the script. Supply urls from your sitemap parser; the capture loop below intentionally does not prescribe one parser for every sitemap format.

Puppeteer’s guide demonstrates page.goto with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' and recommends Page.screenshot() for screenshots. Puppeteer screenshot guide The setting is an example, not a guarantee that every site has finished rendering. Pages with continuous network activity, delayed content, authentication, or script-driven updates may need a different wait strategy, such as waiting for a specific selector or for a site-specific condition. Puppeteer’s navigation API documents the available navigation wait options. Puppeteer Page.goto API reference

Make filenames and batch results traceable
The sample uses the URL’s position in the input array to create unique filenames. For repeatable runs, consider generating a stable filename from the URL path and retaining a separate manifest that maps each output file to its source URL and outcome. Avoid using an untrusted URL directly as a filesystem path.
Keep per-URL error handling inside the loop. A navigation or screenshot failure then gets recorded while later pages continue. For a large sitemap, capture deliberately rather than opening an unlimited number of pages at once: each browser page and full-height image consumes resources, and a controlled concurrency limit helps keep memory and disk usage manageable. These are implementation considerations; the cited documentation does not establish a universal runtime or resource requirement.

Check long pages and lazy-loaded content
fullPage: true requests a screenshot of the page’s full height, but the API reference does not promise a universal browser limit for extremely tall images or guarantee that content loaded only after scrolling will appear. Inspect samples from the target site, particularly pages with lazy images or content revealed by scrolling. If sections are absent or the output is clipped, adapt the capture to the site—for example, trigger the page’s lazy-loading behavior before capturing or capture content in sections—and verify the resulting files.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- Only the visible viewport appears: Confirm the screenshot call includes
fullPage: true; the default is false. - Some pages are missing from the run: Check whether the sitemap URL is an index. Fetch its child sitemap locations before extracting page URLs.
- The page is blank or incomplete: Check the navigation error and the page’s readiness behavior. A network-idle event may not mean that delayed or script-driven content is ready; wait for a relevant selector or condition.
- Images or lower sections are absent: The page may load them only after scrolling. Test the page’s lazy-loading behavior and inspect the full-page output.
- Responsive layout is inconsistent: Set the intended viewport before navigation, and use the same dimensions across the batch.
- One bad URL stops useful work: Catch and record failures per URL rather than around the entire batch; ensure the browser still closes in a
finallyblock. - The sitemap seems incomplete: Follow index files and check whether the site has split its URLs across multiple sitemaps. Sitemap files have protocol size limits.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a page through one GET request and also provides an MCP server for AI agents. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and failed loads are not billed. Cache hits are also not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
Example cURL request for a page URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The endpoint captures the URL you provide; for sitemap-wide work, first extract the page URLs and send a request for each one. ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 shots per month free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer capture the whole page by default?
No. Set fullPage: true in the screenshot options.
Can Puppeteer capture pages listed in a sitemap index?
Yes. Fetch each sitemap location listed in the index, extract the page URLs from those files, then capture the pages.
