What a full-page screenshot captures
A full-page screenshot includes webpage content beyond the visible viewport, as though the page fit on a very tall screen. Playwright describes it as a screenshot of a “full scrollable page.” Its fullPage option defaults to false, so set it to true when the test needs the whole page. This is a capture of the page rendered by the browser. It does not include browser chrome such as tabs or the address bar, nor the operating-system desktop. If you need those, a webpage screenshot API is the wrong capture scope.
Capture a full page with Playwright
Set a deliberate browser context and viewport before navigating, then wait until the page has reached the state your test is meant to inspect. Save to a file for test artifacts, or use the returned buffer for image comparison.

})();Install Playwright in your project with npm install -D playwright and install the browser binaries with npx playwright install chromium. Replace the example URL with the page under test. The explicit viewport makes the layout input predictable; it does not make rendering identical across operating systems or browser versions.
Save to a buffer instead

Full-page capture and element-only capture are different scopes: the Playwright screenshot documentation says full-page capture cannot be combined with a target element in its screenshot tool documentation. For a specific element, capture that element instead of requesting the entire page.

Choose the capture method that fits your test

These interfaces do not promise identical output across browsers. For a visual test, use the same browser and host configuration for baseline and later captures, and review changes when the page or its dependencies change.
Capture the entire page manually in Firefox
- Open Firefox Developer Tools for the page you want to capture.
- If the screenshot button is missing, open Toolbox settings and enable it under Available Toolbox Buttons.
- Use the screenshot toolbar button to capture the entire page, rather than only the visible viewport.

Keep visual test results reliable
A full-page option controls capture scope; it does not control every factor that affects pixels. Playwright identifies host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as factors that can change rendering. Playwright: Visual comparisons
- Keep browser version, operating system, viewport, and relevant browser settings consistent between the reference and test run.
- Capture after the page reaches the intended state, not while content is still changing.
- Review baseline changes when the page or test environment is intentionally updated; do not treat every image difference as a product defect.
- If content below the fold is missing, verify that the capture requested a full page: set Playwright’s
fullPage: trueor Chrome’scaptureBeyondViewportto true.
Troubleshooting
The screenshot shows only the first screen
The capture probably used viewport scope. In Playwright, pass fullPage: true; in Chrome DevTools Protocol, check captureBeyondViewport, whose documented default is false.

The Firefox screenshot button is not visible
Enable the screenshot toolbar button in Developer Tools Toolbox settings under Available Toolbox Buttons, then use it to capture the whole page.
The visual comparison changes between runs
Check whether the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode changed. Keep the environment consistent where possible and review reference updates when a page or dependency change is intentional.

The image contains only an element or the wrong capture scope
Choose the scope the test actually needs: viewport, full page, or one element. Playwright’s full-page and element-specific screenshot approaches are not interchangeable.

Can a full-page screenshot include browser tabs and the address bar?
No. These browser automation and developer-tool methods capture rendered webpage content, not browser chrome or the operating-system desktop.
Can I use a full-page screenshot to compare just one component?
Use an element-specific capture for a component; full-page capture is meant for the complete scrollable page.
