Use Figma’s GET https://api.figma.com/v1/images/{file_key} endpoint. Pass the frame or layer’s node ID in ids, authenticate with a token that has file_content:read, and download the temporary URL returned in the images map immediately. The endpoint can render PNG, JPG, SVG, or PDF, with scale, version, and bounds controls.
What the Figma image endpoint does
The Figma REST API renders nodes from a file rather than taking a browser photograph. A node can be a frame, component, group, text layer, or another renderable object. The request URL is:
GET https://api.figma.com/v1/images/{file_key}
file_key identifies the Figma file. The ids query parameter identifies one or more nodes. Figma returns an images object whose keys are the requested node IDs and whose values are temporary image URLs.
This is usually preferable to automating a logged-in browser: it is deterministic, supports pinned file versions, and can render several nodes in one request. It does not reproduce browser-only behavior such as hover states or interactive animations.

Prerequisites and permissions
- A Figma file key and node ID.
- A personal access token or OAuth 2.0 access token with the
file_content:readscope. - Permission for that token’s user or application to access the file.
- A program or command-line tool able to make HTTPS requests and download the returned URL.
Missing scope and missing file permission are different problems: a valid token can still receive an authorization error when the file is not shared with its owner.
Find the file key and node ID
A shared design URL commonly resembles https://www.figma.com/design/FILE_KEY/File-name?node-id=12-34. Copy FILE_KEY from the path. Copy the value after node-id= and convert the URL’s hyphen notation to the node-ID notation expected by the API when necessary (for example, 12-34 becomes 12:34).
Do not assume the visible frame name is an ID. IDs are stable identifiers assigned by Figma. For a batch export, collect comma-separated IDs such as 12:34,56:78 and let your HTTP client URL-encode the value.

This complete example renders one node, checks the HTTP response, rejects a null image value, and saves the bytes:

Use a fresh request when you need a fresh URL. Store the downloaded file, not the URL.

Choose format, scale, and bounds

At scale 4, a large frame can exceed 32 megapixels. Figma states that larger exports are scaled down, so calculate width × height × scale² before requesting an unusually large image. If visual consistency matters more than editable text, outlining SVG text avoids dependence on the receiving renderer. Keeping text as SVG elements preserves selection but can produce different typography in another rendering engine.
Batch rendering and response validation
Request several nodes in one call:

- Check the HTTP status of the API request.
- Read the
imagesobject. - Check every requested ID independently. A successful response can contain
nullfor one node. - Download each non-null URL and check the download status and content.
A null value means that node did not render, commonly because the ID is invalid or the node has no renderable content. Do not silently skip it in a publishing pipeline; report the specific ID.
Current renders versus reproducible renders
Omitting version follows the file’s current state. That is convenient for previews but means a later run can produce different pixels. Supplying a Figma version ID ties the render to a known revision, which is better for documentation, visual regression tests, and release artifacts. Download the result during the job even when you pin a version, because the returned image URL still expires after 30 days.

Raster or vector: which output should you choose?
PNG or JPG
Raster formats are straightforward for web pages, tickets, and social previews. PNG keeps transparency and sharp interface text; JPG generally produces smaller files but is lossy. Scale controls the pixel dimensions.
SVG
SVG keeps vectors editable and text selectable. Use the SVG options when downstream tools inspect node IDs or need consistent text outlines. Test the receiving renderer if exact typography is important.
PDF is appropriate when the deliverable is a document rather than an image. Confirm that your downstream viewer handles the exported page dimensions as expected.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Batch related IDs in one API call to reduce connection overhead, then download returned assets concurrently within your service’s normal limits.
- Keep scale only as high as the target display requires; pixel count affects transfer size and processing.
- Use timeouts and bounded retries for transient 5xx responses or network failures. Do not retry a 401, 403, or malformed request without fixing credentials or parameters.
- Cache your downloaded bytes under a key containing file key, node ID, version, format, scale, and bounds settings. Cache the file, not Figma’s temporary URL.
- Redact
X-Figma-Tokenfrom logs and never expose it in client-side JavaScript. - For large exports, monitor memory while downloading and writing files; stream downloads in production clients where practical.
Troubleshooting common failures
401 Unauthorized
The token is missing, expired, malformed, or sent in the wrong header. Send it as X-Figma-Token, verify the environment variable, and issue a replacement token if necessary.

The caller lacks file_content:read or cannot access the file. Grant the required scope and share the file with the token owner or OAuth application.
404 Not Found
Check the file key and endpoint path. A node ID is supplied in ids; it does not belong in the path.

One entry in images is null
Verify the node ID’s colon notation, confirm that the node still exists in the selected version, and ensure it has renderable content. In a batch, inspect every map entry rather than treating the whole response as successful.
Image looks cropped or includes unexpected whitespace
Review contents_only and use_absolute_bounds. Overlapping content may require contents_only=false; full text-node dimensions may require absolute bounds.
Export is too large or unexpectedly downscaled
Reduce scale or split the design into smaller nodes. Figma’s stated export ceiling is 32 megapixels, and larger images are scaled down.
Downloaded URL later stops working
That is expected after the 30-day asset lifetime. Re-run the image endpoint and download a new URL; do not use the temporary URL as a permanent CDN address.
