For a one-off job, use your PDF application’s page-export command. For repeatable or automated work, render pages with PDF.js or use a PDF conversion API. These methods create an image of the complete page; they are different from extracting the original image objects embedded inside a PDF.
Choose the right kind of PDF image
A PDF page is a composed canvas containing text, vector artwork, and possibly photographs. A page screenshot preserves that complete composition. Image extraction retrieves only bitmap objects stored inside the file, so it can omit text, lines, backgrounds, or layout.

Adobe’s documentation illustrates the one-to-one result: a 15-page PDF produces 15 JPEG files, numbered by page. File names and available formats depend on the application or service you use.
Method 1: Export every page from Acrobat
Adobe Acrobat provides an export-to-image workflow. Labels can differ between Acrobat releases and operating systems, so use the current command names shown in your installation.

- Open the PDF in Acrobat.
- Choose the command for exporting or converting the PDF to an image format.
- Select JPEG (the documented procedure uses “Convert to JPEG”) or another offered format such as PNG or TIFF.
- Choose the destination and confirm the export.
- Check the destination: each PDF page should appear as a separate image.
Do not select “Export All Images” by mistake
Acrobat distinguishes page export from image extraction. Selecting Export All Images changes the operation to extracting image objects contained in the PDF. Leave that option unselected when you need a screenshot of every complete page.
Format and quality choices
- JPEG: compact files suited to photographs and ordinary screen sharing, with lossy compression.
- PNG: lossless output that keeps text edges and flat graphics crisp, often at a larger file size.
- TIFF: useful in workflows that require a high-quality raster master, if your Acrobat edition offers it.
Acrobat’s export dialog controls the available resolution and quality options. There is no single correct setting: match the output to its destination rather than assuming that the largest setting is best.
Method 2: Render all pages with PDF.js
PDF.js renders a PDF page into a browser canvas. Its viewport scale determines the canvas dimensions. To target a particular width, first obtain the unscaled viewport width, then divide your desired pixel width by it.

Include PDF.js in a browser project, set pdfjsLib.GlobalWorkerOptions.workerSrc to the worker file served by your build, and provide a file-saving method appropriate to your application. This example renders pages sequentially and downloads PNG files:

The loop waits for each render before moving to the next page. That avoids competing renders and lets you reuse or release the canvas after saving. In a Node.js application, replace the browser download step with a canvas implementation and write each buffer to disk; the exact file-writing API depends on the canvas package you select.
Scaling for a known output size
PDF.js uses PDF points for its unscaled viewport. A scale of 1 is not a promise of a particular monitor pixel size. For predictable output, calculate scale from a target width (as above), or choose a scale based on your intended print or display resolution. Higher scale increases both dimensions and pixel count.
Method 3: Use an automated conversion API
An API is practical when a server or batch job must process many files without opening a desktop application. Adobe PDF Services documents an export operation that returns a list of JPEG page images. Its example names the files with an unpadded page index; a 15-page document therefore yields files numbered 1 through 15.
- Create and authenticate an account according to the current Adobe PDF Services documentation.
- Upload or provide the PDF using the service’s current API format.
- Request JPEG page-image export.
- Download every returned image and preserve the page index in your own records.
- Verify that the number of downloaded images equals the PDF’s page count.
Confirm current account, usage, regional, and retention conditions in the live service documentation before putting confidential files into an external service. The documented capability establishes page-image output, not a universal price, speed, privacy guarantee, or image-quality ranking.

Resolution, memory, and file-size planning
Choose dimensions from the destination
- For a web preview, a fixed width such as 1,200–1,600 pixels is often easier to handle than an arbitrarily large render.
- For detailed review, increase the target width or viewport scale until small type is legible at the expected zoom.
- For printing, decide on the required physical size and resolution first; do not confuse screen pixels with print dots.
PDF.js’s viewport scale changes the raster dimensions directly. Doubling scale approximately quadruples the number of pixels, so it can increase memory and storage sharply.
Render sequentially instead of retaining every canvas
A canvas stores pixels in memory. The PDF.js FAQ gives an illustrative letter-page calculation of 816 × 1,056 pixels at 96 DPI: about 3.5 MB at four bytes per pixel before device-pixel scaling. That figure is an example, not a universal requirement; actual use varies with page size, scale, pixel ratio, browser, and implementation.
For large documents, render one page, save it, release its canvas, and continue. The PDF.js demo viewer follows the same principle: it creates and renders only visible pages to reduce memory. If your workflow needs thumbnails for every page, generate smaller previews first and render full-resolution pages on demand.

Troubleshooting
Only photographs were exported
You selected an image-extraction option such as Acrobat’s Export All Images. Repeat the operation with the page-export or PDF-to-image command.

Output is blurry or text is unreadable
Increase the target width or PDF.js viewport scale. Check the source PDF itself at high zoom; a low-resolution image embedded in the PDF cannot be restored by rendering.
The browser tab runs out of memory
Lower the scale, process pages sequentially, avoid retaining completed canvases, and render only the pages a user currently needs. Large page dimensions and high device-pixel ratios multiply memory use.
Pages are missing from a batch
Compare the number of output files with the PDF’s reported page count. In code, await each render and save operation, log the page number, and retry failed pages individually.
Fonts or graphics look different
Rendering depends on the PDF engine and available resources. Verify the same page in Acrobat and your renderer, and ensure your PDF.js worker is correctly configured and served from the expected version.

The API job fails or returns no images
Check authentication, input upload status, file permissions, page-count handling, and the service’s current request limits. Treat a successful request as incomplete until every expected page has been downloaded and opened successfully.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make one screenshot file that contains all PDF pages?
Yes, but that is a different output: combine the rendered page images into a contact sheet or an image sequence. The normal page-export workflow creates one file per page.
Does rendering change the PDF’s selectable text?
Yes. A screenshot is raster artwork, so text in the resulting PNG or JPEG is no longer selectable unless you separately run OCR.
Should I use PNG or JPEG for scanned documents?
Use PNG when crisp text and diagrams matter; use JPEG when smaller files and photographic content matter more. Test a representative page before converting a large batch.
