In a class error boundary, capture React’s component hierarchy trace from the second argument to componentDidCatch: info.componentStack. Use static getDerivedStateFromError to choose fallback state, and use componentDidCatch to log or report the error and its component stack.

Capture the trace in componentDidCatch

React calls componentDidCatch(error, info) when a child—including a distant descendant—throws while rendering. The component stack is info.componentStack. It describes the React component hierarchy involved in the error, including the component that threw and its parents; it is not simply the JavaScript call stack. See React’s Component reference.

class ErrorBoundary extends React.Component {
  state = { hasError: false };

  static getDerivedStateFromError(error) {
    return { hasError: true };
  }

  componentDidCatch(error, info) {
    reportError({
      error,
      componentStack: info.componentStack,
    });
  }

  render() {
    if (this.state.hasError) return this.props.fallback;
    return this.props.children;
  }
}

This is an illustrative pattern, not a tested implementation. Replace reportError and the fallback with your application’s own handling. Before sending error data to a reporting service, apply the privacy filtering and reporting configuration appropriate to your application.

Keep fallback rendering and reporting separate

static getDerivedStateFromError(error) updates boundary state so render can show a fallback. componentDidCatch(error, info) is the place for side effects such as logging. React’s documented example reports both the error and info.componentStack. React advises against calling setState in componentDidCatch to render the fallback; use getDerivedStateFromError instead. The current React Component reference does not provide a direct equivalent of componentDidCatch for function components. If you do not want to write a class boundary, React points to reusable class boundaries and the react-error-boundary package as options.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Handle the error value safely

The error argument is not guaranteed to be an Error instance. JavaScript permits throwing other values, including strings or null, so code that reads error.message should first handle values that do not have that property. Preserve the component stack separately: it comes from info.componentStack, not from the thrown value.

Make production traces readable

Production component names may be minified. If your production reporting needs readable component stacks, configure sourcemaps in the error-reporting pipeline; React says they can decode component stacks in the same way as ordinary JavaScript error stacks. Make sure the deployed artifacts and uploaded sourcemaps belong to the same build so decoding corresponds to the code that produced the error. React also notes that production builds omit full error messages to reduce transferred bytes; the React Minified Error Decoder explains how to look up those messages.

Know what an error boundary will not capture

A boundary does not catch every kind of failure. React documents these exclusions in its Component reference:

  • Errors thrown in event handlers.
  • Errors thrown during server-side rendering.
  • Errors thrown by the error boundary itself.
  • Ordinary asynchronous callback errors, including those from setTimeout and requestAnimationFrame.

React documents an exception for errors thrown inside a useTransition transition function. Do not rely on a global browser error listener as the only way to capture errors handled by a boundary: caught errors bubble to window in development, but do not bubble there in production.

Do not confuse component stacks with owner stacks

captureOwnerStack() is a separate development-only facility. Its Owner Stack differs from the Component Stack supplied to error handlers, and React says it returns null outside development. For boundary reporting—including production reporting—use info.componentStack, not captureOwnerStack(). See React’s captureOwnerStack reference.

Separate client component errors from route and server errors

In React Router, route modules render the closest route ErrorBoundary. In Framework Mode, server errors are sanitized before reaching the browser: the browser may receive a generic message without a stack trace, while the original error remains on the server. A client-side React boundary’s componentDidCatch trace and framework/server error handling are therefore distinct paths. See the React Router Error Boundaries guide.
