To save Chrome network activity for an offline presentation, open DevTools before reproducing the scenario, select Network, perform the workflow, and export a sanitized HAR file. Turn on Preserve log before any reload or navigation that must remain in one capture. Review the JSON file for sensitive data, then import it into another Chrome DevTools window by dropping it onto the Requests table or choosing Import HAR. What a HAR capture gives you
A HAR (HTTP Archive) is a JSON object containing a defined set of request and response fields. It preserves timing, URLs, methods, status codes, headers and other network metadata for later inspection. An imported HAR is a saved capture for analysis; Chrome’s documentation does not promise that importing it replays a live session or recreates authentication state.
Chrome DevTools records automatically while it is open: “By default, DevTools records all network requests in the Network panel, so long as DevTools is open.” See the Network features reference.
Before you record
Define the demonstration
- Write down the exact page, interaction and requests you intend to explain.
- Use a test account and non-production data whenever possible.
- Decide whether the audience needs the complete log or only requests relevant to the story.
Choose a clean starting state
Close unrelated tabs, open the target page, and open DevTools before the first request you need. If the page has already loaded, reload after opening DevTools so the initial document and assets are present in the log.

Capture traffic in Chrome DevTools
- Open Chrome and press F12, Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux), or Command+Option+I (macOS).
- Select the Network panel. Recording starts automatically while DevTools remains open.
- Optional: click the clear icon to remove earlier requests.
- If navigation or reload is part of the scenario, check Preserve log before performing it. Requests then remain across page loads until you disable the option.
- Reproduce only the behavior you will present: sign in with a test user, open the feature, submit the form, or trigger the failure.
- Use the filter box, type filters such as
status-code:404,method:POST, or a filename, and select a request to inspect Headers, Payload, Preview, Response, Initiator and Timing.
Keep the recording focused. An enormous log obscures the important requests and can expose unrelated account activity.
Add screenshots to connect traffic with visible loading
- In Network, open panel settings (the gear icon or the panel’s settings menu, depending on Chrome version).
- Enable Capture screenshots.
- Keep Network focused and reload the page, then reproduce the interaction.
- Use the thumbnail strip and the Overview timeline to relate a visual loading state to requests captured at that moment. Selecting a screenshot can filter requests by capture time.
Screenshot capture must be enabled before the reload you want to explain. Chrome documents this workflow in its Network reference.
Export a HAR file
Sanitized export (recommended for sharing)
- In the Network panel, click Export HAR (the download icon), then choose the sanitized HAR option if shown.
- Alternatively, right-click in the Requests table and choose the save-all-listed-as-HAR command. “Listed” means the current filter determines what is saved.
- Name the file descriptively, for example
checkout-timeout-sanitized.har.
Chrome’s sanitized export excludes Cookie, Set-Cookie and Authorization headers by default. This is not a guarantee that every personal or confidential value is removed. Inspect the complete file before distribution.
Export with sensitive data (only when required)
For a private, controlled handoff that genuinely needs those headers, open Settings > Preferences > Network, enable Allow to generate HAR with sensitive data, and then select the sensitive-data export option. Treat that file as confidential, remove it after use, and never put real credentials in a public presentation.

Audit the HAR before you share it
Open the HAR in a text editor or an approved viewer and search for:
- URLs and query strings containing emails, account IDs, tokens, reset links or internal hostnames.
- Headers other than the three that sanitized export omits.
- POST bodies, GraphQL variables, form fields and response bodies containing personal or business data.
- Identifiers, uploaded filenames and error messages that reveal private systems.
- Requests from unrelated tabs, extensions or background services.
Do not assume that removing a cookie header removes secrets embedded in a URL, payload or response. If you cannot confidently sanitize a capture, make a new recording with test data instead.
Import and present the saved capture offline
- On the presentation computer, open Chrome DevTools and select Network.
- Drag the
.harfile into the Requests table, or use the Network panel’s Import HAR command. - Wait for the request list to populate, then sort by Waterfall, Status or Type and apply filters.
- Open the few requests that explain the story. Show request headers and payloads beside the corresponding response or timing.
Describe the file accurately as a saved record for inspection. Imported entries let the audience examine what was captured; they are not evidence that Chrome will contact the original servers or restore a logged-in session.

Troubleshooting common capture problems
The first document request is missing
DevTools was opened after the page loaded. Open it first, clear the panel, and reload.

Requests disappear after navigation
Preserve log was off. Enable it before navigating or reloading, then repeat the scenario.
The HAR is too large or confusing
Clear the log, reproduce only the needed action, and apply a filter before saving listed requests. Check the filter indicator so you know whether the export is complete or narrowed.
Cookies are absent from the exported file
That is expected for sanitized export. If a private diagnosis truly requires them, enable Allow to generate HAR with sensitive data under Settings > Preferences > Network, export the sensitive version, and protect it.
A shared HAR still contains confidential information
Sanitized mode only names three excluded header types. Search URLs, query parameters, payloads, responses and other headers; replace the capture with test data if necessary.

Screenshot thumbnails are missing
Enable Capture screenshots before reloading, keep Network focused during the reload, and repeat the capture. Existing requests are not retroactively given screenshots.
The imported file does not behave like the original site
Import provides inspection of the saved requests, not guaranteed live replay. Present the request and response evidence from the capture rather than promising that links, authentication or server actions will work offline.

Version and documentation notes
Chrome’s menu labels can change. The default HAR sanitization described above was announced for Chrome 130 in October 2024 in What’s new in DevTools, Chrome 130. Confirm labels in the Chrome version installed on the presentation machine. The Network panel overview is also available in Chrome’s official overview.

Can I capture requests from before DevTools opened?
No. Open DevTools before the activity you need; reload after opening it to capture the initial document and assets.
Does importing a HAR replay the website offline?
No. Import is for inspecting the saved request record. It does not guarantee live replay, restored authentication or server access.

Should I show a full HAR during a presentation?
Usually not. A focused capture with a few relevant requests is easier to follow and reduces unnecessary disclosure; retain the full log only when chronology is itself the subject.
