Use Chrome DevTools MCP’s take_screenshot tool. Configure the MCP server in your client, open the page with its navigation tool, and invoke take_screenshot. You can return PNG, JPEG, or WebP; JPEG and WebP accept a quality setting, and maximum width or height can downscale the result. Any file path you provide must be local to the browser instance running the server.
What you need
- An MCP-compatible client such as an editor or agent that can launch MCP servers.
- Node.js and
npx, because the documented setup runschrome-devtools-mcp@latest. - Chrome or another supported Chromium-based browser. Microsoft Edge and WebView2 are documented connection targets.
- A page URL that the browser can reach. If the page requires login, decide whether the server should use a new browser or an existing authenticated session.
The exact command-line flags are version-sensitive. Check the Chrome DevTools MCP configuration documentation for the release you install before copying a configuration into a long-lived project.
Configure Chrome DevTools MCP
Add a server entry named chrome-devtools to your MCP client configuration. A minimal entry uses npx to start the latest package:
{
"mcpServers": {
"chrome-devtools": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["chrome-devtools-mcp@latest"]
}
}
}
The server normally starts a Chrome instance for you. Restart or reload the MCP client after saving the configuration, then verify that the client lists the Chrome DevTools tools. If you do not want a visible window, add the documented --headless argument:

Connect to an existing browser
An existing browser is useful when the required page is already open or authenticated. Start Chrome with remote debugging enabled, then configure one of the documented connection methods. The HTTP form is:
{
"mcpServers": {
"chrome-devtools": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"chrome-devtools-mcp@latest",
"--browser-url=http://127.0.0.1:9222"
]
}
}
}
The alternative is a WebSocket connection using --ws-endpoint. Use the endpoint exposed by your debuggable browser. Do not leave remote debugging enabled longer than necessary: local applications that can reach the debugging port may be able to connect to and control the browser.
Take a screenshot with the MCP tools
- In your MCP client, select the
chrome-devtoolsserver and confirm it is connected. - Use the server’s page-navigation tool to open the target URL. Wait for navigation to finish and, when necessary, wait for the page’s own content to appear.
- Call
take_screenshotfor the active page. - Choose an output format and dimensions only when the default PNG at the page’s current size is not appropriate.
- If you request a file, use a path that exists in the browser instance’s filesystem. A path on your laptop is not automatically visible to a browser running elsewhere.
The tool reference identifies take_screenshot as the capture operation. A typical agent request is conceptually equivalent to:
take_screenshot({
"format": "png",
"path": "/tmp/page.png"
})
Use the parameter names and schema shown by your installed server; clients can expose the tool fields differently. If you omit a path, have the client return the image in its tool result and save it from the client side.

Choose format, quality, and size
| Setting | Supported values or behavior | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
--screenshot-format |
png, jpeg, or webp; PNG is the documented default |
PNG for lossless UI detail; JPEG or WebP for smaller payloads |
--screenshot-quality |
Compression quality for JPEG and WebP; ignored for PNG | Lower the value when transfer size matters, then inspect text and gradients for artifacts |
--screenshot-max-width |
Maximum returned width | Keep very wide pages within an editor, ticket, or model context |
--screenshot-max-height |
Maximum returned height | Limit tall captures; aspect ratio is preserved |
These controls reduce image size and context use by downscaling large results. They do not change the page itself. Set limits high enough that labels, code, and controls remain readable.
Server-launched versus existing-browser mode
| Choice | Advantages | Costs and risks |
|---|---|---|
| Server-launched Chrome | Clean, repeatable state; easy to run headless; fewer accidental cookies | Not automatically logged in; you may need to reproduce setup each run |
| Existing debuggable Chrome | Can reuse an open page, account session, and local state | Cookies and account data become available to the connected agent; remote debugging adds a control surface |
| Visible mode | You can watch navigation and diagnose layout problems | Requires a display and is less convenient for unattended jobs |
| Headless mode | Works well in CI and servers without a desktop | Visual diagnosis is harder; environment differences can affect rendering |
Use a trusted MCP client for either mode. When finished with an existing-browser session, close the debugging setup and avoid keeping sensitive sites open while the port is enabled.
Edge and WebView2
Chrome DevTools MCP is documented for Chromium-based browsers, including Microsoft Edge and WebView2. The same MCP pattern applies, but the browser connection and executable details depend on how that browser is launched. Begin with a server-launched Chrome configuration to validate your client, then switch to an explicitly connected browser when you need Edge, WebView2, or an authenticated profile.
Common problems and fixes
The client cannot start the server
Confirm Node.js and npx are on the client’s PATH, then run npx chrome-devtools-mcp@latest from a terminal to expose installation errors. Reload the MCP configuration after correcting the command or package name.

The browser never appears
Try --headless on a machine without a display. On a desktop, remove that flag while diagnosing. If you intended to reuse Chrome, ensure it was started with remote debugging and that --browser-url=http://127.0.0.1:9222 points to the reachable port.
take_screenshot is missing
The client may be connected to a different server entry or an outdated package. Inspect the server’s advertised tools, reload the client, and confirm that the entry is exactly chrome-devtools with the current package command.
The result is blank or captures the wrong tab
Navigate explicitly before calling the tool and wait for the target page to finish loading. In an existing session, select the intended page through the client’s page tools rather than assuming the active tab is unchanged.
The file cannot be found
A path supplied to take_screenshot is local to the browser instance. If Chrome runs in a container, VM, or remote host, save to a directory mounted there or omit the path and download the returned image through your MCP client.

Text is too small or the image is too large
Remove or raise the maximum width and height, or capture at the browser viewport needed for your use case. If transfer size is the issue, select WebP or JPEG and set quality deliberately; PNG ignores the quality flag.
The authenticated page is unavailable
Use an existing-browser connection only with a trusted agent and a profile that is safe to expose. Otherwise, authenticate in the server-launched browser using your normal test procedure. Do not copy production cookies into an untrusted environment.
Performance and reliability practices
- Prefer a dedicated browser profile for automation so extensions, popups, and unrelated tabs do not alter the capture.
- Use headless mode in CI, but keep a visible configuration for reproducing visual failures.
- Fix the viewport and browser version when comparing screenshots over time; responsive breakpoints and font availability can change pixels.
- Choose PNG for pixel-sensitive regression work. Use WebP or JPEG when the image is for documentation or model context and minor compression is acceptable.
- Set maximum dimensions only after deciding the smallest readable image. Downscaling cannot restore detail later.
- Close remote-debugging sessions after use and keep credentials out of screenshots and logs.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Read the complete option list and request schema in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element shots, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save a screenshot directly to my computer?
Only when the computer’s filesystem is the browser instance’s filesystem. For a remote or containerized browser, save inside its mounted storage or return the image through the MCP client and download it locally.
Does the MCP server capture a full webpage automatically?
The documented operation is take_screenshot; its output size follows the browser capture and configured limits. Verify full-page behavior and fields in the tool schema exposed by your installed release.
Should I use JPEG or WebP for visual tests?
Use PNG when exact pixels matter. JPEG and WebP are better for smaller payloads, but compression can hide small rendering differences.
