To capture an application’s traffic with Fiddler, run Fiddler on the device where the application is running, make sure the app sends requests through Fiddler, and start capturing just before you reproduce the issue. For readable HTTPS requests and responses, enable HTTPS decryption and install and trust Fiddler’s root certificate. If you only see CONNECT tunnels, the HTTPS interception and certificate-trust steps are the first things to check.
What Fiddler captures—and what it cannot capture automatically
Fiddler is a local HTTP(S) debugging proxy. It records requests that pass through it; it does not automatically see every connection made by every program. An application must detect and use the system proxy, or be configured to use Fiddler as its proxy. If the app bypasses the proxy, its traffic will not appear in an ordinary proxy capture.
For HTTPS, Fiddler can show the request and response contents only when HTTPS decryption is enabled and the client trusts Fiddler’s generated root certificate. Without decryption, a session may show a CONNECT tunnel rather than the individual encrypted HTTP exchanges inside it.
Microsoft Learn notes that Fiddler is third-party software, not owned by Microsoft. The steps below describe the workflows documented for classic Fiddler and Fiddler Everywhere; labels and defaults differ between them, so check the running product rather than assuming a setting or port is shared.

Prepare a focused capture
A short, clean trace is easier to interpret and safer to share than a long capture containing unrelated activity. Capture only the operation needed to diagnose the issue.
- Install Fiddler on the device where you can reproduce the issue. Microsoft’s guidance for its Power Query workflow likewise places Fiddler on the device used to reproduce the problem.
- Start Fiddler and clear existing sessions. In the Power Query workflow, clear the Capture Traffic setting before setup; use Ctrl+X to clear existing traces before reproducing.
- Close unrelated applications and browser pages. Fiddler records traffic that passes through it during the capture, so background activity can obscure the relevant request.
- Configure HTTPS decryption and certificate trust if the target traffic is HTTPS, as described below.
- Confirm the application will use Fiddler. If it accepts an explicit proxy, configure that; otherwise, determine whether it detects the system proxy.
- Begin capture immediately before the specific action, perform it once, and stop capture as soon as it finishes.
- Inspect the relevant sessions and save or export the trace if it needs review. Fiddler Everywhere supports saving, sharing, and exporting captured HTTPS sessions.
For each relevant session, examine the URL, HTTP method, status code, request and response headers, timing, and—when decryption is working—request or response body. These details can reveal failed requests, unexpected response codes, missing headers, or slow responses.
Enable HTTPS decryption
Fiddler Everywhere
- Open Settings > HTTPS.
- Install and trust the Fiddler root CA certificate using the controls in that section.
- Enable HTTPS capture or decryption there, if it is not already enabled.
- Restart or reconnect the application if necessary, then make a short test capture.
Progress Telerik’s guidance is explicit: capturing and decrypting HTTPS requires installing and trusting the Fiddler root CA through the HTTPS submenu under Settings. A certificate warning or a CONNECT-only trace can mean that the client does not trust the certificate, even if Fiddler is otherwise receiving the connection.

Classic Fiddler
- Open Tools > Fiddler Options > HTTPS.
- Select Decrypt HTTPS Traffic.
- Accept the prompts to install and trust Fiddler’s generated root certificate.
- Reproduce the request and check whether individual HTTPS sessions now appear with inspectable details.
Classic Fiddler’s HTTPS decryption is disabled by default. Its interception works by presenting a Fiddler-generated certificate to the client, so the client must trust Fiddler’s root CA. If the application uses its own certificate store or enforces certificate pinning, system-level trust may not be enough; the app may reject interception or continue to hide useful payload details.

Configure the application to use Fiddler
Applications that follow the system proxy
Some applications use the operating system’s proxy settings automatically. Start Fiddler, verify the proxy is listening, and then launch or reconnect the application. Starting the app after Fiddler can matter when the application discovers proxy settings only at startup. If it remains absent from the session list, do not assume the app has no network traffic: check whether it honors the system proxy at all.
Applications with an explicit proxy setting
When an application offers proxy configuration, enter the host and listening port shown by the Fiddler installation running on the capture device. For a local client, this is typically the local machine address; for a different device, use the Fiddler machine’s reachable network address. Exact fields and supported proxy types depend on the application.

Do not copy a port from instructions for another Fiddler edition. Classic Fiddler hookup documentation references port 8888; the current Fiddler Everywhere Windows quickstart lists 8866 as its default proxy port. These are edition-specific documented defaults, not interchangeable values. Verify the active listener in your product before configuring a client.
Capture traffic from another device
- Run Fiddler on a device reachable from the client device.
- Enable remote-client access in Fiddler and note the host address and listening port it reports.
- On the client, configure its proxy to use that Fiddler host and port. A client that does not support an explicit proxy may not be capturable through this method.
- For HTTPS inspection, install and trust the FiddlerRoot certificate on the client device itself, not only on the computer running Fiddler.
- Start a short capture, reproduce one operation, and stop capture. Confirm the expected sessions are present before exporting the trace.
Remote proxying and HTTPS decryption are separate requirements: routing traffic to Fiddler makes sessions visible to the proxy, while trusting its root CA is what allows HTTPS contents to be decrypted for inspection. Only install a debugging certificate on devices and networks you control, and remove it when it is no longer needed.

Fiddler Everywhere network capture and platform differences
Fiddler Everywhere on Windows supports network-capturing mode using Windows Filtering Platform. This can help capture traffic from applications that do not use the ordinary system proxy. It does not eliminate HTTPS certificate-trust considerations when decrypted contents are needed.

Telerik states that Linux does not yet support network-capturing mode. Linux users should plan on proxy capture and, for HTTPS inspection, manually exporting and trusting the CA where needed. Do not assume that the Windows network-capture workflow or its defaults apply on Linux.
Why traffic is missing or unreadable
The application does not appear in Fiddler
- It bypasses the system proxy: Configure an explicit proxy in the application if supported. If not, use a capture mode supported by the installed product and operating system; Fiddler Everywhere’s documented network-capturing mode is a Windows capability.
- The app read proxy settings before Fiddler started: Start Fiddler first, then relaunch or reconnect the app and reproduce the action.
- The host or port is wrong: Check the active listener in Fiddler. Do not assume classic’s documented 8888 and Fiddler Everywhere Windows’ documented 8866 are the same setting.
- You captured too much or too little: Clear stale sessions, close unrelated apps, enable capture immediately before the operation, and stop it afterward.
Only CONNECT tunnels appear for HTTPS
- Enable HTTPS decryption in the installed edition’s HTTPS settings.
- Install and trust Fiddler’s root CA on the client that is making the request.
- For a remote client, perform certificate installation on that remote device; trust on the Fiddler host alone does not establish trust on the client.
- Check whether the app uses a separate certificate store or rejects interception. If it does, operating-system certificate trust may not resolve the issue.
A remote device cannot connect, or HTTPS fails after proxying
- Confirm remote-client access is enabled and that the client uses the Fiddler host’s reachable address and the current listening port.
- First verify that the client can reach Fiddler with a simple test; then diagnose HTTPS certificate trust separately.
- If the client rejects the Fiddler CA, inspect its certificate-store requirements and application policy rather than repeatedly changing the proxy port.
Save and share a useful trace
Once the relevant sessions are captured, save or export the session file for analysis. Fiddler Everywhere supports saving, sharing, and exporting captured HTTPS sessions. Before sharing, review the trace for sensitive URLs, headers, cookies, authorization data, or response bodies; a debugging capture can contain credentials or personal information. Share only the minimum sessions needed and use an approved secure channel.
