The fastest way to save a webpage identified by a URL is Chrome Headless: chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com/. Chrome saves screenshot.png in the current directory. For repeatable jobs, use Playwright’s screenshot API; for a managed URL-to-image service, ScreenshotNeo removes common page clutter and bills only successful, clean captures.

Choose the capture method that fits the job

Method Best for What you control Trade-off
Chrome Headless command line One-off URL capture Viewport size, output file, maximum wait Chrome must be installed and callable from your shell; flags can vary by version
Playwright Scripts, scheduled jobs and repeatable workflows Viewport, full page, element target, waits and output path Requires a project and browser automation setup
ScreenshotNeo API, bulk or AI-agent workflows without browser setup Format, full page, selectors, waits, devices, headers and more Requires an API key; usage is metered by plan

There is no documented universal fastest method for every operating system, network or site. The practical choice depends on whether you need one image now, a controlled automation pipeline, or a hosted API.

Capture a URL with Chrome Headless

One command for a viewport screenshot

  1. Install Chrome or Chromium and confirm its executable is available in your terminal. Executable names and installation paths differ by operating system and installed version.
  2. Open a shell in the directory where you want the image.
  3. Run:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com/

Chrome’s official headless reference says the --screenshot flag captures the target page and saves screenshot.png in the current working directory (Chrome Headless command-line reference). The --window-size=1280,900 argument controls the viewport used for the visible layout; responsive pages can render different navigation, columns and text at other sizes.

Set a maximum wait

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 --timeout=5000 https://example.com/

Chrome documents --timeout=5000 as a maximum wait in milliseconds before capture proceeds, even if loading continues. It is a deadline, not proof that images, client-side data or animations have finished. A site that builds its page asynchronously may need a more specific readiness strategy in Playwright or an API with wait conditions.

Capture a full page

A normal headless screenshot represents the viewport. A full-page image includes the scrollable document and can become extremely tall. Chrome’s current documentation should be checked for the exact full-page flag supported by your installed version; Playwright provides a documented, versioned API for this use case and is usually clearer in scripts.

Use Playwright for repeatable screenshots

Playwright is appropriate when a screenshot is part of a test, build, report or scheduled process. Its documented API writes directly to a path and supports viewport and full-page captures (Playwright Screenshots documentation).

Minimal JavaScript example

import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({
  viewport: { width: 1280, height: 900 }
});
await page.goto('https://example.com/', { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
await browser.close();

Install Playwright in a Node.js project, install its supported browser binaries, save the script, and run it from the project directory. The output path is relative to the process’s current directory. Use an absolute path when a scheduler or container may start in an unexpected location.

Capture the whole scrollable page

await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });

Playwright documents fullPage: true for a single tall image. Confirm that the resulting dimensions are acceptable to your image consumer; very long pages can consume substantial memory or exceed downstream upload limits.

Capture one element

await page.locator('.invoice').screenshot({ path: 'invoice.png' });

Element screenshots are useful for a chart, card or receipt rather than the entire document. The selector must identify the intended element after the page has rendered. Playwright’s screenshot tooling also documents targeting a page element (Playwright screenshot tools).

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

Wait for content that is not ready at load

waitUntil: 'load' only describes the browser load event. For client-rendered pages, wait for a selector that proves the required content exists, or wait for a deliberately chosen delay when no reliable selector is available:

await page.goto('https://example.com/dashboard', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.locator('[data-report-ready="true"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png', fullPage: true });

A selector-based wait is generally more meaningful than an arbitrary timeout because it expresses the condition you actually need. Do not assume that network idle means every animation, advertisement or late API update is complete.

Decide between viewport, full page and element output

  • Viewport: Choose this for the initial screen, a responsive-layout check or a compact visual record.
  • Full page: Choose this for documentation or archival images that must include the scrollable document. Expect a tall file.
  • Element: Choose this when surrounding navigation, cookie notices or unrelated content should not appear.

Set dimensions deliberately. A 1280-pixel desktop viewport and a narrow mobile viewport can produce materially different markup. If the image is going into a report, also decide whether your consumer expects PNG, JPEG or WebP and whether a retina scale is required.

Common failure modes and fixes

“Chrome: command not found” or an executable error

The browser is not installed, its executable is not on PATH, or the command is named differently on your system. Locate the installed binary, invoke it with its full path, or use the executable name documented for your platform and version.

The file is blank or incomplete

The capture may have occurred before client-side rendering finished, after a redirect to a blocked page, or while a required resource was still loading. In Playwright, wait for a content selector and inspect the final URL. In Chrome, treat --timeout as a deadline rather than a readiness signal.

Only the top of a long page appears

You captured the viewport. Use Playwright’s fullPage: true option, or the full-page capability documented for the exact CLI version you installed.

The layout differs from the live browser

Headless mode still uses a viewport, user agent and device characteristics that affect responsive CSS. Set the viewport explicitly, and if the page branches on device or browser features, use a matching Playwright device context.

Cookie banners, chat bubbles or newsletter popups obscure the page

Dismiss them in automation before the screenshot, hide their selectors, or use a capture service that handles common consent and overlay elements. Blocking a popup without checking the page state can also remove content you intended to document.

Authentication or access controls stop the capture

Use an authenticated browser context, cookies or headers only when you are authorized to access the page. Do not put secrets in a public URL, committed script or screenshot filename. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs may intentionally prevent automated capture; do not attempt to bypass controls without permission.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations

  • Startup: A one-off Chrome command avoids writing application code. Reusing a Playwright browser in a worker avoids launching a new process for every URL.
  • Readiness: Waiting for a specific selector can improve correctness, while waiting too long reduces throughput. Define a maximum job timeout and record whether the readiness condition was met.
  • Output: Full-page captures use more memory and storage than viewport images. Resize or split them only after deciding what your reader needs.
  • Repeatability: Record URL, viewport, browser version, timestamp and wait condition with each artifact so a later comparison is meaningful.
  • Privacy: Treat screenshots as potentially sensitive documents. Restrict access to authenticated pages and remove secrets from logs.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a URL screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL with one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.

The API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, selector/delay/network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed public-image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.

FAQ

Where does Chrome save the screenshot?

Chrome saves screenshot.png in the current working directory unless your command or wrapper changes the output location.

Does a timeout guarantee a complete screenshot?

No. It only limits how long Chrome waits before proceeding. Dynamic content may still be unfinished.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I capture a webpage without opening a visible browser window?

Yes. Chrome Headless and Playwright both run in headless mode, so no interactive browser window is required.

What if I need a PDF instead of an image?

Use a tool or API that exposes PDF output. ScreenshotNeo’s capture endpoint supports PDF options such as paper size, margins, landscape mode and page ranges.

How can I make captures reproducible across machines?

Pin your browser or Playwright version, set the viewport explicitly, use a defined readiness condition, and record the URL and capture settings with each file.
