It still visits and renders the URL in the background; it simply saves the result without requiring you to interact with a browser window. For a one-off command, Chrome Headless has a screenshot option. For repeatable captures, Playwright provides a browser automation API, and shot-scraper offers a command-line workflow.
What “without opening it” means
A screenshot needs a rendered page. A headless browser loads the target website and paints it in the background, then saves an image. You avoid manually opening a visible browser window, but you do not capture a page without visiting it or loading its content.
The result reflects the page state and capture settings: viewport dimensions, whether you capture the full page or one element, and when the screenshot is taken can all matter. A screenshot workflow does not guarantee that every site will render identically, and it does not bypass a login, CAPTCHA, bot check, or other access restriction.

Pick the capture scope before writing code: a viewport shot shows one browser-sized area, a full-page shot includes the scrollable document, and an element shot targets a specific part of the page. The sources document these controls but do not establish a comparative speed or image-quality ranking among the methods.

Capture a screenshot with Playwright
Playwright is a good choice when you need to make captures repeatedly or control what is captured. Its documented pattern is to launch a browser engine, open a page, navigate to the URL, save an image, and close the browser. The following Node.js example follows that pattern and adds a viewport setting and a full-page option.
Install Playwright
In a new project, install Playwright and its browser binaries using the commands in the official Playwright installation guide. The exact browser installation command can vary with the chosen engine and project setup, so follow the guide for your environment.
Runnable Node.js example
Save this as screenshot.js after installing Playwright. Replace the URL with the page you want to capture. The example writes screenshot.png in the current directory.

If your automation is in Python, Playwright’s Python API uses the same basic sequence. Install the Python package and browser according to the Python installation guide, then save this as screenshot.py:

Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture
Viewport screenshot
A viewport capture shows only the visible browser area at the selected width and height. Use it when you need a consistent preview, such as comparing the first screen of several pages. Set the viewport before navigation or capture so the site has a chance to lay itself out at the intended dimensions.
Full-page website screenshot
For a full-page website screenshot, use Playwright’s fullPage: true option in JavaScript or full_page=True in Python. This captures the scrollable page rather than only the initial viewport, so the output can be much taller. A tall image may be unwieldy to share or inspect, and some pages reveal or load content only as you scroll; verify the resulting image when the bottom of the page matters. Playwright documents the full-page option in its Page API.

Element screenshot
When only one component matters, capture a locator instead of the whole page. For example, in the Node.js script, replace the page screenshot call with:

If the selector matches nothing or identifies a hidden element, the capture will fail or not show what you expect; inspect the page structure and choose a visible target. Use a command-line tool for a one-off capture
shot-scraper
The release 0.17 documentation describes shot-scraper as a command-line utility for automated website screenshots. Its documented setup installs the package and then installs its browser:

Chrome Headless
Chrome for Developers documents the --screenshot flag for capturing a page. Its example is:

Confirm the flag names and executable path for your installed version in the Chrome Headless shell documentation.
Control output and page preparation
Playwright’s screenshot and CLI documentation covers controls such as filename, output format, high-resolution capture, viewport size, full-page capture, and element targeting. Supported CLI syntax depends on the installed Playwright version; consult the Screenshots documentation and CLI documentation rather than assuming command options from a different release.
- Filename: choose a descriptive path, such as
reports/homepage.png. Ensure the destination directory exists. - Format: Playwright’s CLI documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP choices. Pick based on the downstream use: lossless detail versus a smaller compressed file. Confirm the applicable option in the version-specific documentation.
- Viewport and scale: set the viewport for a stable layout; high-resolution or device-scale settings can produce larger images.
- Timing: waiting for page load is a starting point, but not every site finishes rendering its important content at the same event. If a known element appears later, wait for that selector before taking the screenshot.
For repeatable captures, record the URL, viewport, output format, capture scope, and any wait condition. A change in any of these can change the image, even if the URL stays the same.

Troubleshooting common capture problems
The command cannot find Chrome or its browser
The browser executable may not be installed or available at the expected path. For Playwright, install the browser binaries using the installation instructions for your package and environment. For shot-scraper 0.17, its documented setup includes shot-scraper install. Check that the command is being run in the same environment where the package was installed.

The screenshot is blank or the page looks unfinished
Navigation completion does not always mean that every visual element has appeared. A site may load content later, or content may depend on scrolling or other interaction. Wait for a meaningful selector with Playwright before capturing, for example:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });If the site requires a user action, authentication, or a permitted session, a basic URL-only capture may not show the desired page. Do not assume a screenshot service or headless browser bypasses those requirements.
The page is too narrow, clipped, or different from the expected layout
Set the viewport explicitly and capture again. Responsive websites change layout according to viewport width; a full-page screenshot also has a different height from a viewport capture. If only one component is needed, target its locator rather than trying to crop a whole-page image afterward.
Images or lazy content are missing
Some sites load images only when they approach the viewport. A full-page option does not prove that every lazy-loaded asset has been requested. Check the saved image and, if needed, use a page-preparation step supported by your chosen tool to scroll or wait for the relevant content before capture.

A headless browser still makes a request to the site and renders what it can access. A login wall, bot check, or CAPTCHA can prevent the intended content from appearing. Use an authorized account or capture method where the site permits it; these methods do not establish a way to bypass access controls.

The file is missing or the output is hard to use
Confirm the process completed without an error, that the destination directory exists, and that the output path is writable. For a very tall full-page image, try a viewport or element screenshot if the task does not require the whole document. Select an output format and resolution appropriate for where the image will be used.
Performance, repeatability, and cost
A browser has to start, load the page, render it, and write the image, so a headless screenshot is not a zero-load operation. Repeated work is easier to automate with a script or CLI than by manually opening a browser each time, but the sources do not establish a speed ranking between these tools. Page complexity, network conditions, chosen capture scope, and browser environment all affect the work involved.
For dependable comparisons or audits, keep capture settings consistent and note when the page was captured. If you run captures in bulk, handle navigation timeouts and browser cleanup explicitly, and avoid treating a successful image file as proof that the page rendered correctly. Inspect representative results, especially when the page depends on delayed content.
Local tools require you to install and run their browser environment.
